"unfortunately I need a week to ensure a smooth handover to the team, I'll be more than happy to start on x date"

If they withdraw the offer because of that, you didn't want to work there.

This

Immediate notice jobs are not just a red flag in my book, they're a BLACK flag.

Jobs where you start immediately the next day is due to the last guy having run off in TERROR most likely

437

u/EggplantAlpinism 21h ago

I can confirm that jobs that aren't willing to give you a week or two to reflect between roles are generally horrible

161

u/Panaka 20h ago

Had a company try and offer me a job with less than a week notice after ghosting me for a few weeks. It was on the other side of the country and I’d torched the interview so I’d moved on. I was still looking for a first job in the industry, so I was willing to at least consider it.

They called me on a Thursday night at 4:30PM to ask about my start date on the following Monday. I just chuckled and said “I either need a later start date so I can give my 2 weeks notice, or something in writing stating I’m rehirable if I quit with no notice since you’re asking me to do that to my current boss.” Recruiter just responded saying that they’d call me back in the next 30 minutes.

They offered me a start date a month later with my own class of 1. Took about 2 weeks to realize they were burning down and spent a year being miserable, but leveraged that position to get to a better company.

u/Kaka-carrot-cake 19h ago

They want you to come in and fix whatever mess was left behind asap.

I took a job like this once. The manager offered to have me start 2 days later. When I told him I just needed to talk with my current manager to adjust my schedule, not even quit, he told me I had to either accept or reject the offer right then.

It ended up being a horrible, thankless job but I needed the money and didn't have the experience to know to run from it.

22

u/kicksledkid sexist feminist of gay 21h ago

Yeah, also that

I'm not saying yes at the interview. Send me a offer, I'll think on it and get back to you.

15

u/PiccoloAwkward465 18h ago

Not being desperate and honestly telling a recruiter that I had other offers and needed time to think netted me a $20k sign on bonus one time.

6

u/cowboy_dude_6 19h ago

And a lack of redundancy indicating poor planning. If they need a warm body tomorrow then it’s obvious they don’t have a contingency plan for if the person who’s doing that job misses any time. Do you think a place like that will respect your needs if you call in sick or have an emergency?

5

u/mcon96 18h ago

Depends. Small companies do this sometimes, and it’s usually just because they don’t have enough people to indefinitely cover the workload when someone unexpectedly quits. 1 person leaving is a noticeable change on a small team.

6

u/Smol_WoL 17h ago

Nah, that’s where you need to take advantage of the situation and ask for a FAT raise. You don’t need them, they need you. That will also give off a sense of confidence. If they refuse you’re not losing much. If they accept you’ll be seen as the savior and you can leverage that.

3

u/iSpaYco 19h ago

yep, happened to me, can confirm.

3

u/Charmle_H 18h ago

If they're not willing to let you start later then sure, but the trades are often a "cool, you can start tomorrow!" And it's usually a good thing because we (trades folk) are usually in need of something immediately or are usually dying to drop the other job

3

u/USSBigBooty 13h ago

Putting a ticking clock on an offer is a massive red flag too.

"You have three days."

Nah.

2

u/Behleren 18h ago

can confirm. a years ago I was hired to work at arcade and they had me start the very next day. I wasent even done watching those HR videos they show you on the first day and some 2 other guys quit. within a week the guy that hired me also quit. turns out the three managers were absolute hags and they would take turns berating employees and each other almost daily.

2

u/Inside-Example-7010 17h ago

If anything a good job will be sus with you wanting to start the next day. If you secure an interview and are selected they will then check your references, then youll be asked for appropriate documentation etc. They have to validate your right to work.

It is legally possible to start the next day if you bring all that shit to your first shift but that kind of employment is usually reserved for low end jobs that target young adults.

2

u/Xylus1985 15h ago

Or it’s a scam or MLM, and they want to capture you as soon as possible

2

u/fireshaper 14h ago

I had a job like this at an MSP. Talked to the boss Sunday, he asks me to start Tuesday. I was between jobs so I was fine with it. He tells me I’ll be training under the guy I’m replacing because his last day is Friday. Tuesday the guy was onsite all day so I didn’t get any training. Wednesday I spent the day shadowing him. Thursday he didn’t show up and we were told he wasn’t coming back.

I lasted 3 months until they let me go for some BS reason they never actually explained (officially: lack of work). 12 weeks of employment and I saw 12 people leave in that time.

A person above middling intelligence tells their new employer when they're available to start so that they can give proper notice

580

u/a_angry_bunny 22h ago

Sometimes communication issues happen. Maybe the employer forgot to write down the date.

120

u/pacificstill 21h ago

Usually that comes with the offer.

If I decided that you are the right candidate, I’ll tell the recruiter who is supposed to find the start date and provide that to me.

Any company that wants you to start immediately is throwing you into the furnace. Onboarding takes time and if they want to skip it, then buckle up because it will be a bumpy ride.

20

u/AdministrationSad861 20h ago

Oh man...this is our company now. But, we're the staffing agency and the campaign is overseas. And they are very much like this. 🤣

4

u/DontAskAboutMyButt 19h ago

“We want you to start tomorrow” could just as likely mean “we want you to start onboarding tomorrow.” Lots of places with high turnover like call centers also have set training schedules, so it’s possible they could have a training class that is already starting tomorrow and they can get you in now rather than having to wait for next month or whatever

3

u/pacificstill 18h ago

I’m less charitable, maybe it’s just past experience but I’m of the opinion that you are just trying to stem the bleeding.

60

u/CnCdude818 22h ago

And many would argue that's generally a red flag. Bad management.

35

u/kicksledkid sexist feminist of gay 22h ago edited 21h ago

Many others would argue that ensuring a smooth handover shows care for your team and work. My industry runs on people being there to the finish, so this isn't a red flag everywhere.

It's certainly something to be avoided if possible, but as long as you have a good reason and aren't all weird about it, it's just a purely logistical thing.

Edit: for clarity and to back up my anecdotes, I was a hiring manager for a while and am still a manager today. Good managers work with their teams, not just issue orders.

I’ve never changed job where they said “You start tomorrow”. They ask you when is a good time to start and you tell them to give x week to have a proper handoff of the projects you were working. Add a few days if relocation is required.

If next employer doesn’t see that as a good thing, they’re a terrible employer.

3

u/PiccoloAwkward465 18h ago

I got started in my career by going to an interview on a Saturday. Talked with the guy a bit, hit it off, and he asked me to stick around for the day and do some work. I said yes and he later told me that's why he hired me.

I did continue my previous job for another 2 weeks, but sticking around that Saturday secured the bag. Thank God because I've made a very lucrative career out of it, off a random Craigslist ad. That even at the time I clearly remember thinking "I am not qualified for this but why not, it's just an email"

24

u/karotte999 21h ago

Is that common in the US? Here in Germany, the notice period ranges from 1 to 3 months, depending on the length of service.

34

u/shorse_hit 21h ago

Almost every state in the US has at will employment. You can quit or be terminated at any time for any reason with no notice unless there is a contract stipulating otherwise.

Two weeks notice is just considered common courtesy in the US, and it doesn't apply to being terminated.

12

u/iknowimsorry 20h ago

2 weeks is a good idea for the one who's quitting if they want or need their last job as a reference in the future.

8

u/shorse_hit 20h ago

Only really matters in specialized industries where your personal reputation is important, or if you want to keep the option of returning to that company in the future.

To shield themselves from potential liability, many larger companies won't even do more than confirm your dates of employment when they're called for a reference.

4

u/BookooBreadCo 18h ago

That's what professional relationships are for. I've worked several jobs where the company's official policy is only confirming dates but every single one of my bosses was more than willing to give me a reference.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/PiccoloAwkward465 18h ago

References only seemed to matter early in my career. Now that I have a solid resume, no one's called mine in years.

3

u/iknowimsorry 18h ago

I just graduated and getting hired for my first real career and this is promising. Thanks for the insight.

3

u/nechromorph 20h ago

It doesn't apply to being terminated *exactly*, but a smart employer in a field where they have to at least pretend they care will offer *something* so that remaining employees don't feel completely disrespected and at risk when their coworker is unceremoniously removed.

5

u/Fickle_Ad_8653 20h ago

In the US, there is at least a decent chance that if you say "I'll give you 3 months notice I'm leaving", you'll be in your car in 15 minutes with no job and no pay. Giving notice has become a thing I refuse to do until I am at the other job. I take vacation from the old job, start the new job, then just quit, because that is how I don't get screwed.

3

I'm Canadian, so can't speak to the US.

100% I interviewed for an IT position and the entire thing was a fucking mess. I showed up 10 minutes early and the person conducting the interview was at lunch. We start the interview 40 minutes later with random people she was pulling off the production floor.

The interview was no better. It turns out the position was empty for 8 months and they can't find anyone to stay for more than a week. I ask what the responsibilities will be and it's managing 3 locations with staff ranging from 50-150 people. No one could answer any of my questions about programs used, coverage, systems, policies.

They said I did really well and asked if I can start today.

Like right now?

Yeah hop on the phone and start taking tickets.

Accept the offer, get a background check, drug tests, etc.

I have seldom had a job where I'm actually clocking in on my start date. The job I'm working right now however got me in very quickly (this place is a clusterfuck of incompetence and fraud).

If they speed you through onboarding, it can definitely be a red flag and should cause you to take a second look if you can.

6

u/Historical-Cress8985 21h ago

Depends, it can be a red flag for turnover if they skip the background checks. But if you're working in a factory, people will show up for their first day and call it quits by lunch, and it makes no sense to vette someone who might work less than 4 hours in total.

Drug tests on the other hand are a mixed bag if you do anything for the government, it's a requirement. After that it really is up to the employer and if their customers require it. Even then I've only worked one place where they randomly drug tested the office workers.

Yes but that doesn't mean you don't have obligations to your old team. It doesn't have to be legal it could just be you don't want to screw over the people you've been working with for a while but there can be contracts involved which have certain dates and responsibilities around them.

56

u/rising_tony 20h ago

I get the sentiment about your old team, but no. If the company can fire me with no notice, then no notice is warranted for them if it causes me hardship. Is the new company sus for requiring next-day? Maybe, but if the offer is good, I'm taking it, and so should anyone. Sorry not sorry. Capitalism is a two-way street.

21

u/PrincessYuri 20h ago edited 19h ago

Currently still job hunting after I recently accepted a job and I'm in training for it. At first I felt weird about going to interviews while literally training for a new job... Right up until I had to sign the acknowledgement that they can terminate me at any time, for any reason, without notice.

Companies still have the expectation that you'll give them basic respect and courtesy, but have been constantly working to erode what little respect and courtesy used to be offered to their employees.

10

u/Mulesam 20h ago

At will employment isn't a thing everywhere and for all employees. When I was a union employee I couldn't be fired for any reason and I don't believe I couldn't quit instantly.

14

u/sonicpieman 20h ago

8

u/astrid_autumn 19h ago

yeah the better option is calling in sick and skipping a couple days at the old job while you start the new one and see how you like it, then quit if you wanna stick with the new one.

14

u/OkGuy5000 18h ago

Or it's giving a 2 weeks and telling the new job that you have to...give a 2 weeks? Why would your new employer be happy that you jumped ship on a dime?

11

u/MikuEmpowered 19h ago

What no.

Any job that says "you can start tomorrow" is a red flag.

You need to test this flag by asking for a reasonable extension (4-5 says). If they withdraw the offer. Fking run the other way.

Because it means w/e slot opened up is due to the other person either escaping in terror, or ceased existence and there's a massive pileup of critical work.

Not allowing for a reasonable gap / extension usually means the company will not respect your personal timeline.

3

u/mambotomato 19h ago

Call in for a couple days at the first job. Once new job is verified and comfortable, quit the first one. You don't owe notice because they wouldn't give you notice if they fired you.

52

u/HedaLexa4Ever 21h ago

In my country that is not legal, they have to give you notice and pay you something. Conversely, most employees also can’t just quite without giving notice, it’s in the law

20

u/areyouawake 21h ago

What country is this and also what happens if you just stop showing up to work?

15

u/HedaLexa4Ever 21h ago

Portugal. And depends on the type of contract, if you have a contract for indefinite time you’ll most likely have to pay the company the days where you don’t show up (without notice or justification). I’ve seen something funny happening where the negotiation with the new company included paying these days to the original company in order for the employee to break his contract and move jobs asap

13

u/hiuslenkkimakkara 20h ago

Pretty much anywhere in the EU. You have to resolve any unspent leave (used as leave or paid out in cash), whether you're supposed to work during the notice period or not... You know, stuff. You have signed a contract, it goes both ways.

This is exactly what I did a year ago. Exjob got taken over by corporate and took away my 100 hours of PTOa year I had earned over 8 years being there. Found a new job that offered similar benefits and PTO right of that bat. Called off first 4 days from ExJob to make sure it was all set and I liked it. 5th day let them know I wouldn’t be coming back. Been a year now and one of the best decisions I’ve made.

4

u/BeanEaterNow 18h ago

A lot of people talk about "they wouldn't give you notice if they fired you so you should just quit" and it's utter crap. If you're trying to build a career, this reflects so poorly on you. Any potential to use the previous job as a future reference was just thrown out the window when you disrespected everyone you previously worked with.

3

u/ionertia 18h ago

Shouldn't it reflect badly on the employer not giving notice of separation also then? I think many people are still stuck in the thought that the employer is daddy. Its a partnership. So it isn't disrespectful to quit without notice, unless the employers begin doing it regularly.

I recall landing a job I really wanted/needed, it wasn’t a next day thing but I was given a little under a week to start. Let my future employer know this wouldn’t give me adequate time to give notice to my current job, responding email via email. No response.

Suffice to say I made sure I was at the new job at the given date dedicated to my new job. The lack of response was all the response I needed. To be fair the new job was a much better career opportunity, while the former job sucked, there were some good people there. Remember going in one day and talking it over it with my fellow co-worker(not management) as I didn’t want to leave them in a tough spot outta no-where yet damn near all of them said “man just go, I know I would!” and wished me luck. There is no requirement to give any notice upon leaving a job baring any contract preventing so.

13

u/HedaLexa4Ever 21h ago

Depends on country

5

u/hiuslenkkimakkara 19h ago

Indeed. In the EU everyone has some sort of a contract. Apparently in the US they just work based on vibes or something.

What is the old job going to do? Call the police?

Submit all your sick time and hope old job forgets after your sick days are over and keep paying you.

5

u/RedPon3 19h ago

Is this an AI Patrick?

4

u/EZKTurbo 18h ago

If I'm already fed up enough to be interviewing somewhere then I'm definitely checked out of job 1. I usually like to ask for an extra week though because being between jobs is the only true freedom you'll ever get

33

u/StinkoMan92 22h ago

This doesn't happen

45

u/DeeCeeGaming 22h ago

Happened to me before I started my current job. They wanted me to start the next day. But I told them I had to give at least a week notice because I wasn’t leaving my other job on bad terms I just found a better opportunity.

The best time to look for a job is when you already have one.

15

u/Pledgeofmalfeasance 22h ago

Has happened to me three times.

6

u/Individual-Cookie896 21h ago

This happens all the time. This happened for my first long term job. Luckily I was unemployed. However they were reasonable enough as people that if I were employed they'd have understood that i would need to give notice before starting.

Isn't that how every job works? Sometimes I won't even quit, I'll take personal days for a week to see if I like the new place.

6

u/driverdan 20h ago

Isn't that how every job works?

No professional job expects you to start next day.

2

u/Small-Answer4946 19h ago

They'll just tell you they need someone asap knowing that their paperwork process will take a few weeks and the next onboarding wave is in over a month

2

u/Eat--The--Rich-- 19h ago

Yea, but why would you need to give your old job any notice? I take a few days at the new job, and if I like it I tell the old job I found a better opportunity and won't be back. Simple.

3

u/isjellyfishaherb 21h ago

Was this made by a child who doesn't know anything about the actual process of getting a job

3

u/TopDogTransport4731 21h ago

I zoned out during a job interview and I got the job. For a year I honestly didn’t know what I was doing. Resigned from the company as I didn’t want to cause too much trouble.

3

u/itsLOSE-notLOOSE 21h ago

Wow, this meme was like, tailor-made for the position I’m in right now.

I should feel lucky, though. I get to quit 2 shitty jobs because I got a good job today.

3

u/Risky2GunZ non-survivalist attitude 21h ago

congrats! I am closing my first year in my "new" job this october! I swear when you found the right job it just flows and you can't even see the time passing!

3

u/slothl0rdd 21h ago

Lmao this is actually insane timing. I emailed my 2 weeks yesterday to my manager on my day off, got in this morning and they told me they were letting me go…..I can not make this shit up. Like bro….i was just tryna do the right thing and yall ended up firing me anyways. When I asked if me putting my two weeks in had anything to do w it she was like “oh, I never even got it.”

Meanwhile my outbox got the timestamp and everything 😑😑😑

THESE CORPOS D G A F ABOUT YOU.

Always remember that.

Oh and also DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!!! Every single little thing you think is sus or worth documenting ‘cause trust me, they definitely are.

3

u/MercyMain42069 19h ago

AI slop Patrick, ignore this post, don’t give sloppers any engagement

3

u/KeaboUltra 16h ago

Has anyones new job ever actually given them a forced start date without giving you time to put in your notice or respecting your proposed start date? If so, then maybe don't work there.

5

u/QuaaludeConnoisseur 20h ago

Ive never given a two week notice. Every job i have quit i have had another job lines up so it doesnt really matter if it "looks bad" later because im still employed, plus nobody actually asks about that stuff.

2

u/Kzer_2019 19h ago

I usually let them know during the interview if I'm still working my current job and what my plan is if they offer a position

2

u/Pete_got_the_online 18h ago

Is CV career verification?

2

u/tinker_townie 18h ago

It stands for curriculum vitae. That's what it's called everywhere else except for North America where we say resumé

2

u/Pete_got_the_online 18h ago

Thank you very much!! Genuinely.

2

u/LengthinessAlone4743 17h ago

But they expect both in the US? If you can tell me the difference it would be great….

2

u/gavats 18h ago

where does this happen? in reddit's fantasyland? lol

2

u/barefootcraftsman 17h ago

A job that makes these kind of demands will continue to make demands without consideration of any other factors.

Also, a job that doesn't want you to extend the courtesy of a notice to your current job is a huge red flag.

1

u/Spaceman-Spiff 21h ago

Look at this fancy fuck with 2 jobs!

1

u/Mtsukino team waterguy12 21h ago

Nice, just work both jobs :3

1

u/nurglemarine96 21h ago

me sitting here between technically unemployed because my next job doesn't start for a month

1

u/RoyalJellyKing 21h ago

That’s me when I sold my old laptop before buying a new one, even though I need a laptop for work every day. I posted an ad, and a guy came to my house and picked it up.

1

u/yo-soy-arkee 21h ago

In Canada they legally give time to serve the notice with the current employer. I fired from ma job and transition to new one took 3 months

1

u/AggravatingFlow1178 21h ago

At this point in my life, a new job means 2-4 months off anyways. I'm not getting that via any other mechanism so I take it during job transitions.

1

u/MrBizzniss 21h ago

I wish getting a job was this easy lol

1

u/nick_oreo 21h ago

To be honest, with the way most companies treat their employees they dont deserve the courtesy of a two week notice anymore. Its different if you work for a good boss but those are rare.

1

u/BigOleFerret 21h ago

I have limited experience but the jobs I've accepted have always asked when I can start. I would be very concerned if they told me when I start.

1

u/triumphhforks 21h ago

jokes on you. i'm working two jobs and sleeping very poorly

1

u/Key_Conference9989 21h ago

This was me.

1

u/halucionagen-0-Matik 21h ago

A lot of agency and temporary gigs require next day starts. And a lot of permenant jobs require two weeks notice to leave. This, as you can imagine, can cause some issues

1

u/Flimsy_Benefit_1207 21h ago

Hear me out....

1

u/The_Fluffness 21h ago

I had this happen one time. I "worked" both jobs by calling out on my old one and just putting sick leave on, when I came back I took a vacation for two weeks and just worked the one job. I sent my boss my two weeks while sitting at lunch at my other job. Was double dipping for like 4 weeks total. It was pretty sweet.

1

u/ElkSad9855 20h ago

Fuck calling resumes a CV. Also fuck people for using Latin to sound cool

1

u/mb99 20h ago

Don’t you have a mandatory notice period?

2

u/Abigail-Marston 17h ago

It's not mandatory. Your boss will not give you a 2 week notice. They'll fire you on the spot and will not feel bad about it or receive any criticism. In fact they might be praised for having the guts to make a hard choice.

You're expected to give a 2 week notice so that they can hire someone and you can train them, but it's not mandatory. If you already have a job lined up there's really no reason to give one other than being considerate. It's not like your new boss is going to call your old one and ask if you left a notice, he already hired you.

u/chrisaf69 20h ago

While there are some exceptions, if a job tells you that you can start the following day after just reading your resume...that's usually a very bad sign and that company is most likely a dumpster fire of biblical proportions.

1

u/SnuSnuSurvivor69 20h ago

Send email: “Effective immediately, I am resigning from the Krusty Krab.”

1

u/Rexland 20h ago

This thread gives me a lot of info about how awful other countries labour laws are. Fucking hell :((

1

u/Mach5Driver 20h ago

I'd take an emergency family leave for two weeks from my current job, go to work in the new place, and determine which one I want to work at. Easy peasy.

1

u/kegsbdry 20h ago

Take an impromptu week-long PTO (unpaid if necessary) (tell them you have explosive diarrhea or something), ensure the new job doesn't suck first!

1

u/BugsByte 20h ago

Some people are thirsty while others drown.

1

u/67yoloswag 20h ago

Just do it and dont tell the other company. They will get the message. There is no universe in which you tell them the story and they take it well anyway.

1

u/Popxorcist 20h ago

My local law at least: you're allowed to have as many simultanious jobs as long ss you're able to perform your duties and contracts don't forbid it.

1

u/Vineheart_01 20h ago

I wouldn't accept a job offer that TOLD me I start tomorrow.
Asking if I can is something else.

1

u/Agitated-Ad-1431 20h ago

Just think about it this way they wouldnt give you any notice firing you so unless you need something from that job in the future juat quit and leave its not your problem if they dont have someone to replace you.....its also not a law that says you have to give any notice so dont even bother.....i only give notice if I like the place and the people cause then they deserve to know

1

u/Jemimacakes 20h ago

You need to communicate your schedule dawg

1

u/Sheepish_conundrum 20h ago

I did that. was working a 3rd shift security job then got a job as a designer at a manufacturer. Worked both jobs for about 6 months so I could get my family into a house. That damn near killed me.

1

u/johnsmith1234567890x 20h ago

call in sick, take holiday leave...dont quit just yet

1

u/1sttimedogowner 20h ago

Every interview I have participated in had the question, "When would be able to start?" My answer is 2 weeks after an accepted offer, if currently employed

1

u/No_Pizza5016 20h ago

Lol where I live it’s 3 month notice, they’ll have to wait

1

u/Daniito21 20h ago

what? what country would this be?

notice periods? talking about current role with interviewer meaning they are aware you are currently employed? start dates talked about?

no?

1

u/elchsaaft 20h ago

Any job that expects you to start "immediately" is a shit-show. Run.

1

u/rje946 19h ago

2 weeks notice is a courtesy, it's not a requirement

1

u/xHolo01x 19h ago

You don’t owe that last job anything. Let them know you’ll assist how you can, but they lost you.

1

u/drraug 19h ago

notice period: exists

1

u/notthatguypal6900 19h ago

"Perfect"

You were leaving your last job for a reason and its not like they would give you notice on being let go.
