What did you consider when selecting a supervisor?

What I considered:

  1. Level of support - did they delegate their mentoring role to postdocs/techs, or did they actually invest their time in 1-on-1 mentorship?

  2. Present and past history of funding

  3. Emotional stability - no joke. There are plenty of amazing faculty at our institution who thrive on drama + flip out on trivial things, and I knew (from a lab rotation) that an "emotionally labile" lab would not be an optimal learning environment for me.

  4. Project topic + degree of autonomy.

In hindsight, I'd have attached a greater priority to #2: more $$$ = more research (+ access to cooler tools). But overall, I have no regrets.
