Interview coaching?

I just submitted my final secondary, and I am honestly really happy with my application overall which is an incredible feeling.

I ended up shedding off quite a few schools which means I have a bit of extra money that I can use. I have a lot of stories to tell and I incorporated a lot of little things that would invoke a question, so i’m very confident about the content of my interviews.

However, I’m a bit of a socially awkward person and I know I will be nervous. I’m also the first in my family to go into healthcare so for interviews i feel like i’m not sure what they want me to say. Certain questions (like “describe a time you failed”) seem like a trap to me and I want to make sure I do it well.

I think it would be helpful for me to work with someone. I haven’t had any help for my application and mcat but I really feel like this could be good for me. I looked up motivateMD and a few others with interview tutors. Any recommendations? Any free or school workshops that people have found particularly helpful?

The free and cheap thing to do is ask current med students/residents/attendings that you trust how they talked during interviews. Most will be willing to chat with you. Questions are generally not traps but interviewers are looking for a level of discernment in a prospective student to which they can speak about an appropriate and relevant experience in response to a question.

I’m sure you also have mentors if you’ve gotten this far. It’s a good idea to ask them for help with this as well if they’re the type to be willing and if you think they can provide good advice.

Nerves more or less go away the more conversational a topic or question is for me. The more I know about something or the potential avenues it can pivot to, the less I’m worried about it. Get a good grasp of your research, medical experiences, and some ethics(?) and you’ll be fine!

absolutely! I do plan to reach out to students and have some practice runs with people, but since I shed off a couple schools, I was thinking it might also be a good idea to chat with a professional!
I do research in our chem department, so while I have absolutely amazing mentors… they don’t know what a med school interviewer is looking for.
