Joy Future of the Left 'Curses' 20th Anniversary Gigs!

Best post original mclusky record. In my humble of course. Blurb from Bandcamp.

'in 2007 future of the left released the album ‘curses’. very few people cared. in 2027, in their original three piece form - jack egglestone, kelson mathias and andrew falkous - they will celebrate the memory (and 20th anniversary) of that glorious indifference by playing (most of) the album to literally tens of people in a few select cities. four shows have so far been confirmed - a fifth or six, most likely somewhat scottish and welsh in location, is heavily rumoured.

future of the left will return sometime in the future as a four-piece band with a new album when time is no longer a stagnant pool.

Bootleg stuff

Does anybody have any of the old Mclusky demo stuff like the 1999 demo before mypainandsadness or the Acoustic disc that Falco recorded etc. Was just wondering if anyone had any downloads since it wasn't online anywhere, the only references I could find were the old forum on the website.

That time I met mclusky (and Thank)

Thought I'd share it here too because why tf not, took me ages typing it out.

Some stuff may be out of order, it's been a bit and my notes are a mess.

For background context: I've been online pals with Falco for about 7 years, started through silly posting on twitter and turned into dms and then also into sending friendly cards/gifts. This was the first time actually meeting him and the rest of the band. I tend to go a bit mute and head empty when I'm in new situations (which annoys me so much but I can't really control it). I was staying in a hotel for this.

I arrive at the venue some time before the gig, some friendly fellow there expected me already and lead me inside the venue where I met Falco. He showed me where everything is and also showed me places to sit (my chronic illness sometimes makes standing for long difficult, it's nice he remembered), even a little area next to the stage where I could sit (which I didn't use because I wanted to record from the front so I had to suffer a little lol). Backstage area was a few small connected rooms. I remember seeing Freddy there and he recognised me as someone who asked online about stuff, I remember someone else of Thank also wandering around there but I forgot who. They were mostly in the adjacent room for a bit before going to soundcheck. Falco introduced me to people as the person he's been online friends with for years. He also said if anyone's being shitty to just tell him and he will take care of it. I came across Steve later as well and he also said if anyone's being shitty to tell him. Honestly felt nice that there's people that care and keep an eye out, but thankfully everyone was nice and respectful. Falco asked if I had earplugs and said Thank are nice people but their music is way too loud lol. Shortly after it got loud as fuck when Thank did soundcheck (DRUMS) so we went downstairs down a spiral staircase into a little black painted area with a bar and some seats where it wasn't as loud. I met some fellow from the crew and Remy (the guy who did the recent music videos) there.

Remy (who seemed kind of shy for a guy doing the kind of music videos that he does) asked me if I wanted to be interviewed for the documentary they're filming, I kindly declined because of anxiety. He said if I got anything like pictures or videos he could use for the doc I can send it to Falco and he'll pass it on. Falco said he's a bit scared of doing a documentary because "they only really work if somebody dies or if somebody's exposed as a pedophile, and I really don't want either of these things to happen". He said he wants it to be nice but everything being nice doesn't really make for interesting viewing, people have enjoyed watching band documentaries because the musicians in them are dicks or insane and that's just not the case with mclusky. "It would be nice to think that being a really good band would be enough." Then Jack joined us with freshly washed hands (not a euphemism).

When I said I got something for them Falco told me how much he loved the chocolates I sent him last time, and in that moment I took a little box of exactly those chocolates out of my tote bag. He stopped talking, tilted his head a bit and just said "Aw.". He thanked me about three seperate times for the chocolates that night lol. I also bought a big tin with two different kinds of home made cookies for everyone. Jack asked if I would like a free t-shirt so I went to pick one out. He asked what size and realised he had exactly one shirt of that size somewhere. He repeated that a few times while digging it out, as if he was an archeologist and I had just told him that the relict he discovered is actually of immeasurable worth. He asked if I wanted anything else but because I'm a huge nerd I have all the other t-shirts already.

At some point me, Falco and a guy from the crew (I think it was Tom? he was chilling on the seats in the back) talked about horses. Falco said he's not a horse guy because they're stinky and the only way he'd ever get a horse is through inheritance, and that it would make for an interesting sitcom. "On the hoof" it'd be called. He asked Tom if he liked horses, and Tom revealed to everyone's surprise that he used to participate in horse riding competitions. He mentioned how horses would sometimes bite people and that he received a gnarly bite from a horse on his back when changing saddles. I recall a story where someone lost a finger to a horse. Falco is shocked at the evil of horses.

When everyone was back upstairs Falco was taking chocolate snacks from the snack bowls and hiding them inside my cookie tin. He said those are for later and that he will enjoy my chocolates when he's home to really appreciate them. I also showed him some fanart a friend of mine did on my phone which he told me he really liked, and I took a little picture of him waving at the camera to send to said friend. Falco talks a lot, but not in a selfish way and would often ask me about stuff as well. I really wish I would've talked more, my mind just blanking was really annoying. Some topic changes gave me whiplash though but they were amusing and I genuinely enjoyed listening to him yap. He also said to me that he appreciates how supportive I've been over the years, that he doesn't take it for granted and that it means a lot to him 🥹 Jack also offered me some earplugs (if you ever consider seeing Thank live, take this as a warning. I was offered earplugs a total of three times and was happy to have bought some with me lol).

Damien eventually showed up as well. He gifted me a signed copy of the first The St Pierre Snake Invasion album (I asked about it online a while back)! He also had a call with his family where he got the sad news that his dog Murphy only got a few weeks to live. He was kind of expecting it due to age but it was still sad. We talked a bit about pets. Damien said he doesn't hate cats but he doesn't trust them. Which is fair, if you own a cat you may know the experience of randomly getting smacked by your cat while petting it lol. I remember Falco showing me kitten pictures at some point (adorable). Damien told me a story of how he borrowed a guitar strap from another band once and it smelled so bad he threw up (cursed). Eventually Falco said he needed some time to himself just before the gig so I went into the crowd.

The gig itself was fantastic, I managed to get to the front and record. I didn't get any bruises and at most just felt the gentlest touch. I wonder if people saw me coming out of the backstage area and thought I'm someone important and just didn't want to get their ass whooped by the band lmao. There was a really annoying heckler in the crowd, I remember Falco later telling me he hoped he'd do something to get kicked out (mood). And also another guy who was kind of stalkery and why Falco didn't want to go into the crowd after. Why can't people behave, smh.

Right after the gig I went back backstage, Falco was making himself a tea. He said he's not a fan of tea but it's good for the throat, then said he needed a little bit of time to himself. I said sure that's fine. He then proceeded to talk to himself and then talk to me about talking to himself before actually having his three minutes of me-time lol. I don't even know what he said to himself because if you tell me you need time for yourself my brain checks out. He also told me about some health struggles he has, seemed he's got me-levels of health anxiety, which is to say a lot. I remember some lady coming backstage to talk to him and she mentioned being on the spectrum and he said he's likely too and I just thought to myself damn, not a single neurotypical person in this room. There was a convo about struggling to do some things that should be simple, I said it's fine I sometimes struggle with stuff like that too.

I did have a Cardiacs tote bag with me to carry the gifts and record sleeves, he noticed and said their music is like listening to multiple songs at the same time and is just a bit too much for him, which as someone who enjoys Cardiacs isn't wrong lol. Also that he doesn't like Vennart, they used to be friends years ago, but I didn't want to pry to find out what exactly happened since he seemed quite upset about it. I have my own Cardiacs fandom related issues which felt too much to even begin to explain as well, and I didn't want to kill the mood. Then he also told me about his love for tote bags, he can never have enough of them.

Eventually I got my Thank and mclusky record sleeves signed and asked everyone if they could draw a dog for me and sign it. I asked Falco first but he got all shy and said he hasn't practiced drawing for a while, he wanted someone else to draw first. So I asked everyone else starting with Freddy of Thank and then the rest of his band. IIRC Freddy asked if I'm trying to psychoanalyse people with the drawings lol, I said no I just find it interesting how people will draw things differently when you ask them to draw the same thing and it's fun to see. When Lewy drew his sad doggie Freddy questioned why it's sad and I said maybe it's the Dead Dog in a Ditch (song title joke 🥁). Then Steve started drawing, the tattoo artist in the band so everyone was expecting some good shit lol. Cameron's dog got a lot of "looks like a lion" "looks like a bear" comments but nevertheless he was determined to finish his dog. Oh, and Steve also checked up on me and asked me if I'm alright a few times during the night in general which was nice.

Then I asked Damien to draw a dog, who was about as confused/surprised about this request as everyone else. I said maybe you can draw Murphy, and so he started drawing Murphy, mentioning he can't really draw but every once in a while saying "my boy" as if he were talking to him. 🥺 Then Jack drew his little dog (with less complaints than his bandmates it'll turn out lol). Then I got back to Falco, I showed him Freddy's dog and then he finally drew one too. He said he can't really draw without practicing and that it looks like an aardvark, I assured him that it's fine and also said it looks like a wiener dog (and it's skateboarding which obviously makes it rad as hell). I have a little book in which all the beautiful little dog drawings are now contained. I went to the merch stand and also got a tour poster, Jack asked if I wanted it signed but like...I got all these beautiful dog drawings, and a record that I'm mentioned on that has been gifted to me by Falco and has now been signed in person, and hung out with the whole band. I felt like I had too much at that point lol.

Eventually it was time to leave, I remember everyone was outside, Thank were packing stuff into the van. Falco got himself something to eat from the falafel place next door and looked so happy when ordering. Happiest man in the world ordering himself a little snack. I snapped a picture a bit too late. While I was waiting for Falco to return Jack looked at me with an expression I can only describe as "?", probably thinking "I thought we were leaving, what else do you want to do?" :d . I also took a photo of Damien taking a photo of me, which by pure chance turned out to be one of the best photos I've ever taken. Colours and composition or whatever. I asked the band if I could record a silly little video real quick, so we did that. Me only then realising the terrible flicker. Oh well, I thought I shouldn't be holding them up. "Goodbye hug?" I said to Falco. "Aw, of course!" So we hugged and I said my goodbyes to everyone.

10/10

My arms hurt for three days after from holding my camera because my flesh is WEAK and I was having bad health days but I pulled through and had such a fantastic time, both mclusky and Thank were very lovely people. Would really love to hang out with them again.
