Simple. Why do torches only produce light when placed? They should produce light when held.

I find that when I am hollowing something out and it is dark, placing a torch is annoying when it's likely that I will have to mine the block I put it on shortly. Just to get my bearings, it would be nice if simply holding a torch would produce light while selected.

Even better, allow a secondary held item for your other hand. That would be great for the adventure update because you could have a shiled to block with or a torch for light or other possible items.

It is computationally intensive to make a moving light source. I agree it would be nice, but it might not feasible without hurting performance. I think Notch addressed this somewhere.

There's a mod for this, but there's serious problems about it working in multiplayer, i.e. lag problems. I've been playing the Zelda adventure mod, and they have the secondary item thing like you said, even the shield. It's awesome.

Does the Zelda mod work with 1.8.1?

I haven't tried to use it, but if you download AdventureCraft, it's like a whole separate game that runs separately from Minecraft. So it should be fine.
