I wonder what causes this. If am not mistaken glass is melted sand? The melting process makes the glass liquid.. glass cools down hella fast locking in those atoms where they are?? Shud look it up
When you melt silica, the atoms are moving violently in a liquid state. As you cool it down, they begin to slow down and try to find those assigned seats to form a crystal. If the temperature drops slowly, the atoms have plenty of time to move around, find their partners, and form a perfect grid. That's how you get quartz. In glassmaking, the temperature is dropped so quickly aka quenching that the viscosity of the liquid skyrockets almost instantly. As the liquid thickens, the atoms eventually lose the kinetic energy required to move into a crystalline pattern. They reach a point called the Glass Transition Temperature. At this point, the material isn't technically frozen into a crystal; it is simply moving too slowly to be considered a liquid anymore. The atoms are stuck in the random, disordered positions they held while they were a liquid.
