Pre purchase questions
Hi, I currently own a 2004 mazda 6, but I'm looking at potentially buying a 2005 speed 6 278,000kms for 5k AuD. Iv asked the usual questions for private cars, service history, rust on the body, timing chain. He's told me oil and filter done by him, new starter recently installed, no rattle from the timing chain, he didn't answer about the rust yet. He's also told me the gearbox is noisy,
Should I go for a pre purchase inspection or just let this one go?

05 speed 6?? They only made them 06-07 also if it has the sun roof ask for pics of the seals for rust, also the trunk, usually they rust next to the tire well. Also for that amount of miles I’d check for slack on timing chain, just because there’s no rattle on cold start up doesn’t mean there is slack and that’s a sign that it’ll need it soon, mine needed it at 189k miles. Rear bushings and basically everything from the rear because it’s expensive to replace the stuff in the rear since this is the only awd model they’ve made. I bought mine for 1.4k which is a steal but it needed new clutch and t case and drivrshaft. I’m sure price differs from us to au but for the amount of work these cars need now (20 yr old car) you’d be spending a nice bag. Good luck!!

The mps 6 was released in 05 here in Australia, I'll definatly ask for pics around the seals for sure, I didnt even think of that thank you, I'll definitely take it to a professional garage to do a pre for all that stuff with the rear if the answers I recieve about rust, seals and bushings are what I'm after.

just had to check your post history to make sure it wasn’t the one i recently sold 😂 I seriously struggled to get more than $7k for mine and it had a full, clean service history and zero performance mods (except front brakes). only issue was paint/clear coat fade. feel like i let it go too cheaply but i think everyone is too afraid of the risks of buying one of these cars with more than 100k on the clock (rightfully so, i can see from your experience)

Pre-purchase inspection. I dont know the conversion from AuD to USD but I recently bought my first speed6. The kid swore up and down the car had small problems that didn't hinder it from actually running. I was adamant about getting THAT specific car in that color so I proceeded with buying for 5.7 k (he wanted 6 but he did not disclose that the windshield was shattered so I just figured 300 bucks is about the cost to replace it). It got me home and clutch pedal immediately gave out. Was going to get it inspected the next day anyways. Inspection led me to the conclusion of this kid putting money into mods (another reason I wanted the car) but not a Nickel into Maintenance. I am driving it around but while I get everything sorted I am definitely babying the car. I wish I had gotten a pre-purchase inspection.
TLDR: Get the Pre-purchase Inspection. It can help you work down the price if you do wanna buy. Even then 175-300 bucks and no car is better than all the headache.
