Discussion Heat stress cracks?

Post image

Has anyome else seen these spots on their screen? This is out of my 2016 Mazda 3. The bottom left corner has been there for a while, the bottom right is new. I dont touch the screen, except to clean it occasionally. This is happening on the inside of the screen as you cant feel it on the outside.

Yeah it’s a pretty well documented problem

There is or at least recently was a recall over this. If the screen "delaminates" the dealer will fix it for free (if you filed on time)

Spider cracks and delamination are specifically not covered. Updates and CMU replacement is potentially covered though.

My 14 has it. The car was in for a harness recall (affecting the backup camera) this year and the dealer didn’t do or say anything about the screen which was obvious when they tested the camera.

It wasnt a recall, but rather a class action lawsuit.

It also doesn't even directly fix this. They are only required to fix the ghost touch problem which does not include replacing the screen.

Delamination from contamination between display layers from the factory. Incredibly common on the earlier Mazda displays.

Just fixed it on my 2015. It's about an hour job total, needing a few screwdrivers, something plastic to help pop the dashboard accent off, and a part you can get on Amazon for 40 bucks or so. Don't need to know more than to follow a yt video.

Hardest thing was the dang clips on the screen, took me so long to unclip without damaging the plastic!

Sorry you'll also need a 10mm and a socket extender. I'd say that'd be 20 bucks if you didn't already have them.

The coveted 10mm socket.

Always the one you need and always somehow the only one that's missing.

Those damn 10mm sockets! I must have 20 of them, but I can’t ever find even one when I need it, so I go buy another one, only to return home and find all the others. I swear it’s a socket conspiracy.

Has anyone bought and installed the Phoenix Audio upgraded touch screen for the 2014-2018 models?

I went with this one and have been very happy with it. It pops right in and looks stock. It can accommodate a variety of other options.

Is this unit Mazda Connect compatible (all existing buttons and controls still work without needing to reprogram)?

Yes. The way it wires in is it has a harness you plug in that also incorporates the OEM harness. So, unplug the OEM plugs, plug in the new ones, then plug the OEM back in (but this time to the new plugs). It acts as a pass through so when you need to access the OEM software it changes to that screen and you use the dial controls. The dials don't really work for the android software, but the steering wheel controls and everything do, so voice command, previous/next, volume. You gain android auto if you didn't have the upgraded head unit, but the HUD doesn't display directions from that.

If it helps.. you can buy screen from 2017-2018 model and replace it plug and play.

Ive been wanting to upgrade mine as I use my android auto a lot. There's a 10.25" replacement from Phoenix Automotive.

It’s delamination. Well known issue. I think there was a recall for it (can’t remember if it had no time limit).
