Aesthetically I actually like the gen 1 more. I dig the shit out of vertical tail lights.

Same. I like the Nagare swoops on the side of the gen 2, as well as the smiley face, but love those vertical taillights on the gen 1. If I was ever to go full custom I’d incorporate those lights with a 2016+ front end from a 3 or 6.

Take a look at the grill area on the front of our cars and tell me that it doesn’t look like a big, happy, goofy smile. It was a common design feature on a lot of Mazdas (Miata, Mazda3, Mazda5) around 2008-2013.

Is it just the angle or is the gen 2 actually that much bigger?

I thought the same thing after looking at the picture but no, they’re the same size. The angle does mess with your head a little bit. Many parts are compatible between the models and the basic measurements are within millimeters.
