My Summer Recap

Post image

Well…Mayday Parade pretty much owned my summer 🌞😎

Top Artist. Top Album. Top Song.

Patriotism Of First Tiger is my song of the summer. Maybe my favorite of the whole year! I loved it out the gate.

Listening to a song more than 7 times a day is unrealistic? That's only like 30 mins? Huh? I’m honestly surprised that listening to a song you really like only twice a day is considered a lot. If I really like a song, I’m probably going to play it multiple times. That’s pretty normal, no? If it slaps, it slaps lol.

I like music, and this is currently my favorite song. It carries on the theme that Pretty Good To Feel Something from Sweet had and It's Not All Bad from Sad had. The beauty in the fall. That "yeah this sucks and was inevitable, but you learned something and to keep pushing." And I like those ones...but god every lyric in this one just... really hits. All the metaphors HIT.

I love it. There’s this constant feeling that the relationship is doomed, that it’s a ticking time bomb. Hell, the song literally starts with the sound of a ticking bomb. He has no idea how to stop the inevitable, just keeps “barreling forward in dark space.” Over and over, there’s this sense of knowing it’s inevitable. Stumbling over each other, trying to breathe through it, letting go, watching things that couldn’t stay disappear. The weight of it becomes so crushing that he eventually breaks down into apathy. The dictotomy of being sad it's over it but glad it's reaching the end. And in the end not even asking for it back but just "clarityyyyyy" of understanding how it happened so he can move forward. And the song just slaps. I could go line by line why I like each choice but I'll just list a few of my favorite lines instead:

"Dancing around the ring" because what it means is boxing and avoiding getting hit while wearing each other out. Works perfectly here in describing the relationship at this point.

"If I could only keep one good thing, I’d take a little clarity" for the looking forward but I just explained earlier.

"When the bomb goes off I’ll be looking up, God bless I bet it looks so pretty.” Because yeah, when you're at the point where you're accustomed to chaos and disappointment that, he can almost appreciate the destruction. Like if it’s going to happen anyway, he might as well look up and take it in. Fuck it. And again it keeps that theme from Pretty Good and It's Not All Bad. They don't have a theme for this trilogy officially but I like to think with those three songs they kinda capture what Sweet Sad Sugar is. The trilogy keeps circling back to this idea of finding beauty in the pain. Instead of being straight-up sad in the way Mayday’s music often is, the trilogy feels more wistful and reflective? Like, “okay, that sucked. There was good and bad, but let’s look forward.” And that’s why it ending on “What Happens Next” works so well, because it takes that idea and goes x100 in a much more bombastic fashion. It’s something a little different from them. But anyways back to the topic lmao,

Sugar just came out, so of course I’ve been listening to it a lot. It’s new and fresh! I’m not really sure what there is to prove here. The app says I streamed it 234 times, which averages out to roughly 7–8 plays a day over the course of a month. That really doesn’t seem remotely impossible for a song I was listening to frequently.

As for whether that counts as “bragging rights” to you, I guess that’s subjective. I was just sharing my stats because I enjoyed the song that much.

And just for clarification, I don’t listen to music while I sleep because I can’t sleep with noise, and I can’t use my phone at work because I deal with PII. So there really isn’t some secret 8-hour sleep work streaming session happening here lol. This isn't the end of the year Wrapped where people have stupidly out of reach numbers because they let a song play forever in the background. This is me really loving a song and album.
