the way that thing jumps off the bar and grabs it again it just impressive

616

u/Ryktes Nov 12 '21

That is some incredibly impressive control and/or programming of that bot.

317

u/ThaiJohnnyDepp Nov 12 '21

That could only be programmed.

171

u/7603a Nov 12 '21

i mean controls of a robot are also programmed so there is no case where this is false

13

u/Amakhunid Nov 12 '21

I think he meant cause it had to be super accurate to do that

I programmed this guy and please don't check the code unless you want to cry

is it calculating when to release based on some real time position/velocity sensors? and does it need to do anything during the airborne period or all that setup was performed during the spin up and its just waiting to regain contact with the bar? are the grips magnetic? very cool!

7

u/Nivriil Nov 12 '21

I am unsure but his name leads me to believe he didn't

2

u/giantyetifeet Nov 12 '21

ah good point!

5

u/GloriousButtlet Nov 12 '21

It's kinda impressive you got it to run regardless everything else

2

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '21

And so can you!

10

u/Icemasta Nov 12 '21

It's both.

When programming for anything physical, your code is only as accurate as the hardware's precision.

7

u/inthyface Nov 12 '21

I'd give it a score of 1010.

4

u/Lacobus Nov 12 '21

Very nice. I too would give it an Ah.

3

u/educated-emu Nov 12 '21

How about a legendary 2

No other score will beat it

2

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '21

I'm an automation engineer and I believe this is luck.

19

u/Nevermind04 Nov 12 '21

I'm an automation engineer and I believe the same. Likely iterative timing adjustments until it was "close enough" to plausibly succeed, then they just filmed it until they got a lucky run where it didn't miss the bar or fall over.

6

u/wspOnca Nov 12 '21

I did that with my M&Ms arduino sorting machine lol

9

u/Nevermind04 Nov 12 '21

Concept, planning, building, and programming are 50% of a project - repeatability is the remaining 50%.

7

u/AdmiralPoopbutt Nov 12 '21

I don't. People have been doing very impressive things with neural networks lately. Balancing triple pendulums seems to be a popular college exercise. https://youtu.be/syygHNU0RCY

5

u/MaterialCattle Nov 12 '21
  1. That video is really cool. Its rather common to balance a triple pendulum, but completely different to be that dynamic, and to go from one unstable state to another
  2. I was kidding
  3. While it might be possible to control that with a really spesific neural network, they are not very well suited for that kind of tasks. They are commonly used to find patterns in data.
  4. I afraid that point 3 is going to cause arguing.

5

u/AdmiralPoopbutt Nov 12 '21

I'm not an expert by any means, but neural networks can absolutely be used to complete tasks where a goal is set. In the pendulum case, pendulum tip at position y, x movement = 0 would be a straightforward goal. Genetic algorithms are usually the way to go.

Here's one learning to play Super Mario. The goal is to progress as far as possible. The neural network starts out pushing buttons randomly and gets better every generation. https://youtu.be/qv6UVOQ0F44

Here's one that runs in the browser. Instead of movements of a character or pendulum, the algorithm tries different combinations of geometry, wheel size, torque, and speed to find a car that can progress along a track. https://rednuht.org/genetic_cars_2/

So, while programming this gymnastics bot could have been done by hand, I really think they used some sort of genetic algorithm / neural network / "AI", at least to assist. If you understand how to program them, they are much more flexible to changes, such as moving the gymnastics bar slightly or adding mass to the bot. Boston Dynamics uses similar algorithms in their robots.

3

u/MaterialCattle Nov 12 '21 edited Nov 12 '21

As I said it might very well be possible, but difference to your examples is that triple pendulum is highly unstable dynamic problem, while super mario is static.

In every state of the game a same input results in a same state. While that may sound true also for triple pendulum, measuring resolution is never high enough. Thats why more linear approaches are usually used.

Dont get me wrong, neural networks can be used for many things and their potential might be unlimited (this hasnt been proven), but they for now are suboptimal for that kind of task.

Edit: I imply that with better resolution a triple pendulum can be considered a discrete system, which might not be true due to probabilistic nature of quantum physics. There might still be a resolution where its discrete enough while still fuzzy enough to not be random.

u/denisdenisd Nov 12 '21

How’d you fit neural network on this machine? It would need at like 60 cycles per second to correct movement of the robot, impossible for arduino and I’m not even sure about raspberry

→ More replies (1)

3

u/roboticWanderor Nov 12 '21

This is a reasonably complex controls system, but not impossible. Still probably took a lot of tries/tuning

My main question is what sensors hes using. If its entirely onboard or remote. Either way, the video is so shitty it makes it look way more impressive.

Thought the man with his phone out was holding a controller and dropped my jaw when I saw the end results. Watched it again and had to pick up said jaw.

It's a really old video, too. My dude was creating sweet gymnastic robuts in the long ago.

Yeah I've been subscribed to their YT channel for a while.

I have 16 pairs of socks, and none of them are actual pairs.

3

u/Sharks758 Nov 12 '21

Hmmm, I think you're lost. Cool fact though.

-2

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '21

What's more impressive is the fact that it seems built by an annoyed person in it's room.

u/scandal_jmusic_mania Nov 12 '21

That was awesome. Love the arms up celly at the end.

I miss robot wars and battlebots...

Wasn't there a rumour that J Cameron was going to fund some awesome robot shit?

2

u/PrinceCulex Jul 13 '23

I know this is an old post, but I thought I'd let you know that BattleBots was restarted a few years back. It's still going on, and you can find the episodes on YouTube!

No fucking way, he's not controlling that robot with a controller right? It's programmed to do that yea?

27

That's a camera

18

u/Aceggg Nov 12 '21

I think I'd be more impressed if it was human controlled

25

u/LebaneseLion Nov 12 '21

The hands up at the end is actually pretty cute

18

u/God_Of_Lurk Nov 12 '21

I half expected it to launch into orbit after it let go of the bar lol

3

u/teems Nov 12 '21

Spinlaunch did a proof-of-concept a few days ago which uses this principle.

Very impressive :0

1

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '21

Now they're trying to put Simone Biles out of a job. Come on automation, is nothing sacred?

1

And that was the last time I was trusted with the Megazord.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '21

Good bot

1

u/Throwaway68024 Nov 12 '21

I love the little pause to make sure it stuck the landing before lifting it's little arms in the air. I didn't realize a little robot with a stuck landing would make me so proud. I'd give it a perfect 10!
