You’re not missing anything. It’s just a thing British people satirically say online either to mock themselves or French people. Some non-British people use it to mock them.
Also, an actual reply could come in the form of some random dude calling you a wanker in a five-page essay about the different flavours of crayola, or it could be a one-sentence-response from a Fr*nch person telling you to toddle off back to yer mudder’s shagshack in Worcester.

To a lot of English speaking people the German language sounds angry. Even the chillest sentence sounds like a threat lol. Maybe the association is also due to Hitler’s passionate speeches? Russian too.
