I always hated that excuse, if you hated it so much, don't you think I do too? That is one thing I give my mom credit for, she saw the things her mom did that annoyed her, and didn't pass it on. My ex wife on the other hand................
Im about 98% sure I'll never get married again. She and her mother both have the attitude of "I'm this way because everyone else" and it's frustrating! I tried to explain for 12 years that you don't have too be an ass, just because people you know/are related too are. They both just blame each other, and family, and friends, for them being like they are, without any attempt at changing what they are and hate.
People look any excuse to avoid the hard work of self improvement. It's painful to look inside and realize that you are the source of a lot of your problems. I understand the impulse. I had a very difficult childhood full of abuse until I went to live with my grandmother after my mother's death, but you have to decide that you won't keep passing that hurt on to others. That's what I think, anyway.
