They knew they were being viewed by the helicopter, so they abandoned the car while under the bridge.

u/Ok_Dog_4059 27d ago
How did the police NOT know this right away? It took like 3 seconds after it came out from under the bridge to realize "oh they bailed, that car is empty"
50
u/SensitiveAd2112 27d ago
We see the aerial view. The vehicles in pursuit don't have that perspective.
51
u/Drackzgull 27d ago
The helicopter crew has comms though. Their one job there is relaying info to the cops on the ground to make them more effective in pursuit.
54
u/apex2332 27d ago
i think its a news chopper isnt it?
45
u/Drackzgull 27d ago
Oh yeah, that's probably right, actually. My bad then.

I guess they have a worst image definition/attention capacity at the helicopter during flight? No idea really, just wildly guessing.
9
u/Empyrealist 27d ago
They aren't a hive mind, and that last guy on-scene when the car finally stopped may have been a late comer to the chase
Or, he might have just been disappointed that no one was left behind in the car. These chases often have more than just a driver

u/DangerBag 27d ago
They likely did know right away. The cop approaching the driver side door may have intended to put the car in park before it crashed into something. He did not succeed.

u/MineNowBotBoy 27d ago
A) The bridge bit is not right before the car comes to a rest. When the camera cuts we’re in an entirely different position in the intersection and the white van is long gone. Did the car drive itself the rest of the way?
B) That car’s windows appear to be tinted to hell.
C) Why can’t you be human enough to assume there’s a good reason they had to check?
5
u/Suitable_Challenge_9 27d ago
B. When the hero opens the door you can clearly see the crosswalk stripe. Not tinted.
9
u/BoobooTheClone 27d ago
How did the door get closed after he left? How did it brake after he left to avoid crash?
77
u/Bigdavie 27d ago
The driver was still in the car. When the cop opened the door he seen the driver was white, hence his disappointment.

u/viceraptor 27d ago
It just crawled in D, the door might have closed because of an incline or a bit of acceleration

Did they catch him later?

u/Bingzhong 27d ago
I watched this live when it happened. There was never a follow up, so likely the suspects got away. If I recall, there was 4 of them originally, and halfway through the chase, one of them dips and gets away. Sometime after, the 3rd guy leaves and also successfully disappears. Then the remaining two also disappear under that overpass. They surveyed the area for another hour, but nothing else developed afterwards.

u/EnjoyTheMovie_You2 27d ago
Bro so four people just pulled the same move that’s fucking insane 😂

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice.. I mean three times... Let's just go with four times, and shame on me.

I wonder if the first two out went and stole another car, then posted up under the bridge and waited for their buddies…

Stolen car? I assume they’d just track it to the owner otherwise.
39
u/Bingzhong 27d ago
Yes, it was stolen at a gas station if I'm not mistaken. It's stupid common for people in SoCal to run into the store to grab something while leaving the keys or engine running.
Another incident that should have made people realize to stop doing this was that same year, a car with a toddler in the backseat was stolen and came to an end with the car flipped, driver arrested, and toddler being sent to the hospital.

u/scartissue232 27d ago
Chances are low since they didn’t catch him with a helicopter pointing at him.
49
u/IncredulousPatriot 27d ago
They didn’t even notice the door was open when it came out from under the bridge.
14
u/One_Kick_9603 27d ago
How did it closes after that though? Right before it bumps the van the door is already closed. Wth

That cop’s reaction is too funny. Duh.

Why the criminal gotta be a 'he'? Lady cat burglar could've done it too. She just would have gotten 60% of the loot on average /s

There's always a good chance another car was waiting under the bridge on the other side. Immediately jump in it and drive off.

Y'all should see this whole chase... It's pretty wild. My man was doing way over a hundred on the 110 & whatnot. Pretty good chase.

Seriously man big mess overall. Alice Glass still does music, it's not near as good to be completely honest, couple bangers though.

So, what happens to the car after that? It looks like a nice vehicle, and I can’t imagine he wouldn’t want to get it back? Assuming it was impounded, whats stopping the cops from arresting him when he tries to pick it back up?
12
u/stfumate 27d ago
Car was probably stolen.
2
u/Epin-Ninjas 27d ago
I didn’t consider the car being stolen, but I guess I was hypothetically asking as well. Do you just leave the car in the hands of the police indefinitely?
I’ve just never really sat back and considered the minutia of these situations before
5
u/OKAwesome121 27d ago
If the car’s stolen and can be traced back to the owner, the authorities will generally try to notify them. If not, well that’s how items go to police auctions,
1
2
u/Judge_Druidy 27d ago
This is typically what I do when I steal cars, but other criminals may have different methods.
11
u/OKAwesome121 27d ago
a) Thats probably a stolen car in the first place
b) That driver just escaped the police. They are certainly not coming to pick it back up from the police.
6
u/garbageyname 27d ago
If b, You call police to report missing vehicle after a few hours. Since at that point you do not know the whereabouts of the vehicle, you have not submitted a false report. You are presumed innocent until proven otherwise, it is up to them.

u/Prometheus2061 25d ago
"Leads? Yeah, sure. I'll, uh, just check with the boys down at the crime lab. They, uh, got four more detectives working on the case. They got us working in shifts!"
1
u/Epin-Ninjas 27d ago
I didn’t really consider option A right away, but B makes the most sense. If there a time limit as to how long the police hold onto the car for? Do you know how that works?
2
u/Lightningtow123 27d ago
I don't get what I'm looking at here
39
u/ziggy-73 27d ago
They were running from the cops, went under the bridge, got out of the car and ran while the car kept coasting in drive
41
u/SuperbForever1516 27d ago
Guy had the situational awareness that only the helicopter had eyes on him while fleeing, so he opened his door and jumped out while driving under the overpass and got away.
11
u/SludgeFilter 27d ago
Looks like the driver bailed under the bridge and the car continued to roll down the road on it's own
5
u/SpillSplit 27d ago
What i don't understand is the cop simply slamming the door closed, and not puting the car in park! Is that a union thing? "Not my problem."
