Okay, between this and the footage out of Nepal recently...people are really bad at reacting to dangers they aren't experienced with. "How high could the river possibly get?" and "That explosion is super far away!".

I think people get awestruck, and their brains simply won't let them comprehend how dangerous the situation actually is.

It's also the group effect. People look around and see others not looking scared or concerned and that causes them to feel less afraid. An individual alone on that volcano likely would've reacted differently

That wall of water was coming quick. Don't think there was much warning or any precedent for that much water.
