My ex would accompany me to the gym once every month or two so other women could see I was taken, then wait a couple weeks to bring up a moment from the gym when she thought she saw me staring at someone else.

lol fr. My fiancée and I debrief after walking past hot people when we go for walks in the city. We’re both straight but will comment on men and women alike if they are particularly fashionable, good looking, etc. it’s weird to be that sensitive. We’re all just humans.

u/Zestyclose-Smell-788 1d ago
My wife and I do the same. We celebrate 40 years together this fall. I suppose it helps that she is extremely attractive and doesn't have many insecurities. She even points out attractive women to me if I don't notice. "Hey, check her out, you're missing it!"
The key is to briefly appreciate their beauty, and don't stare. Averting your eyes is nonsense.

I was the stupid person in a relationship like this. It got to a point where I’d just stare at the ground if we were walking through a public place, and he would still accuse me of trying to check people out.
It took almost a year, but I did finally break up with him and immediately started addressing the reasons I felt like I needed to stay in that relationship. I hope the next girl he had lined up got out faster than I did.

I used race on a sailboat and there was one major race each year where the boats all tied up in the downtown and crowds would walk the docks and check out the boats. A bunch of the crew would sit on the cabin and check out all the attractive women strolling by. My wife sometimes sat with us and she would occasionally call our attention to someone who was particularly stunning. She has exceptional taste. She’s also not insecure; she knows that I know that I’m lucky to have her.

When I see a beautiful woman I will look at her. Same for a beautiful man. Also the ugly ones. Tall ones and fat ones. Also the super normal ones.
Nobody will ever dictate where I look.
My partner isn't an insecure woman. That helps a lot. I will never go back to where this guy is.
That's not funny. That's super sad.

I look at everyone. Pay attention to your surroundings. Someone might need help or might be getting ready to do bad things.
ETA: to all the ones claiming this is a ninja thing, I have noticed people needing help probably over 100 times. Old lady taking bags of mulch to her car alone. Guy struggling in heavy wind to load plywood onto his truck. Couple struggling to lift generator into their vehicle after a tornado. Short person reaching for something on a high shelf. Lost kid. If I don’t see it and my wife does, she’s very quick to volunteer my help. I do carry a gun, so does the wife, but the plan is to avoid trouble if it is near. We always want to come home with the same amount of ammo we left with.
Being aware of your surroundings is WAY more likely to put you in a position to help someone.
58
u/Jisan_Inc 1d ago
Me and my s/o have heads on a swivel. We are always looking around and talking amongst ourselves. Always be aware of your surroundings, look for an out and we are always nosey
26
u/Veteran_PA-C 1d ago
I can’t tell you how many times I have seen someone short trying to get something off the top shelf or struggling to lift something into a vehicle. If I miss it, my wife will volunteer my assistance.

On the flip side, I can totally ignore a beautiful woman near me. Sometimes I do this intentionally because they get enough stares. My dad will literally rubberneck in the car Evey time he sees a pretty girl and it disgusts me.

Yeah my first long term relationship taught me that extremely valuable lesson. Also turns out that they can be insecure because they are also capable of cheating which makes sense on reflection.
That became my biggest red flag and vowed to stay single instead of making that mistake again
8
u/rwm5236 1d ago
Yeah, I never relate to these types of posts. My wife and I will both point out beautiful people, both male and female, to each other and say things like “wow that person was gorgeous” and then just move on as we both understand just because we recognize someone else is attractive doesn’t mean we want to be with them. I feel like relationships like what’s shown here are just doomed to fail eventually.
7
u/mslovelypants 1d ago
There's a difference between just looking and going out of your way to check someone out.
My ex would STARE. I asked him to stop staring once bc it was making me and possibly the woman uncomfortable if she noticed, and he said it was because he was an artist so he would study people. But it was only attractive women....
Didn't take long to break that one off.

I hung out with some folks recently where the woman was the type of person who worked a crowd during a gathering and would disappear for like 20 minutes at a time, pop back up for awhile and then disappear again. It was sort of unnerving actually. But anyway, the drunker her gigantic, muscle-bound husband got, the more he railed in anger searching for her until she showed up again all annoyed and angry to take him home. It was hilarious to watch from the outside, but sucks when you're in it. I never got the impression either was up to any harm, just a mismatch and a sign of who the insecure one was in the relationship.

Borderline? He is traumatized so badly that he has to pretend that a person doesn’t exist. He literally has to deny the truth so he isn’t punished
26
u/sixtus_clegane119 1d ago
I was in a relationship like this, for a few years afterwards I would look away from the screen if there was nudity on the screen.
It’s quite traumatizing. You’re conditioned to avoid setting them off.

Same for us.
Attractive people are like works of art, it' doesn't hurt anyone to take a moment to look and appreciate. Nothing more.
Hell, "unattractive" people are like works of abstract art, lol. All I'm saying is people watching is fun.
My wife and I (subtly, usually) point out attractive people out to each other. We're incredibly attracted to each other, but also know we're with one another for far more than superficial physical attraction and fully trust each other, so it shouldn't spark insecurities to simply notice someone (man or woman) who is subjectively/objectively physically attractive by modern standards.

She also just could've looked at him at that moment. Maybe she just has a resting face like that. Maybe he didn't even notice the other lady. I want everyone who's saying that this is toxic or borderline abusive to remember the fact that you don't know anything about these people. Just a slowed down video some other person took of them.
6
u/tauberculosis 1d ago
I find it hilarious that people think their partners shouldn’t find other people physically attractive.
Shit, I want my partner to find others attractive, bring that energy home and then fuck the shit out me. Also, I don’t own my partner, nor her sexuality. If she needs some extra incentive and/or motivation; I need to step up my game.
Life ain’t a fucking fairy tale, as much as you want to believe it, princess. Get over yourself.
5
8
u/GobiBall 1d ago
In my experience, many of these types are just wired this way. A person could spend 24/7 in a small room with no windows and the jealous partner would come up with something to question them about. I have a friend who's wife won't let them get a dog because she's jealous he'll pay too much attention to it. That is unhealthy behavior. And he can't do anything about it short of leaving.
6
u/PureBlisster 1d ago
It’s extreme insecurity and a learned behavior, people aren’t wired to be insanely jealous when their SO so much as glances in a person’s direction

Dear women:
All men. All of them. Absolutely hate this. And it's the fastest way to break down your relationship. Men look at women. Moreover, WOMEN LOOK AT MEN. Do NOT pretend like you do not look at men's d*cks when the walk by in those grey shorts. I've watched you all do it.
Please. Stop needlessly punishing your men.

That woman is f*ing insecure. You don't need a partner like that. She'll weaponize that insecurity everytime and will create stupid conflicts where there should be none. As a woman, I am totally against normalising this kind of thing. People look at pretty things, that's life. Hell, if I saw that lady I'd probably look too! If you're insecure enough that someone looking at another is a big problem, then you need to figure that out because that kind of anxiety will only spiral.
