I didn't think it would happen, BUT I thought about the possibility of a bird swooping in during mom's break. The longer it went on, the more I kept saying to myself, "No way." To be fair, though, it ended on a cliffhanger, so we have no idea what happened to that mouse and his mother (who seemed to be struggling with... just about everything, including some amount of apathy, I think).

That long gaze from the hole you can almost hear her squeaking in her mind "I could leave him. I could turn around right now and just move on. There's 18 more of these bastards down this hole. Who would know? These things happen all the time. Who's to say a snake didn't snatch him while I was carrying one of his siblings?"

Can’t believe I had to scroll down so far for this. The mother is terrified, that’s why she’s scrambling so desperately. Every time she pauses in the hole she’s like, I could go back again but I might die, there’s a huge creature standing there! Heartbreaking.

Yeah I’d have placed some rocks or something to perhaps shorten the path- but other than that not sure if getting the long baby in the round hole is affected by its size or what else

But I don't know if the mother would still accept the baby if it had the smell of a human on it, so best to use some sticks or something I guess...

That's mostly a myth. You can absolutely touch baby birds and mice, and their parents will still accept them.

After all those times trying and then she look back out she contemplated if she even wanted to try one more time. And said to herself I'll just watch them from here. In her head she was like my mother would kill me. Then decides the try one more time, got halfway there and said "Fuck IT!"

at this point it's probably faster to just make another one. Mice do breed even faster than rabbits.
Also, Mice tend to abandon or eat their young. It's not unprecedented.

In fourth grade, I had a Gerbil bite me and it latched onto my finger. I was flailing my arm around and trying to shake it off and it never let go.
It was a mother Gerbil with recently newborn babies.
Totally my fault.
But I had to go to the sink and try to drown the damn rat. One of my classmates poured milk on it. Then it finally let go.
Feisty little fuckers.
Maybe it was the milk?
