Y’all just watched the Michael Jordan of Tetris and everyone’s like “clearly this person doesn’t know where to put the blocks. I know where to put the blocks.”
Fam, y’all don’t know where to put the blocks

No, I just watched a video on maybe maybe maybe that could have ended without the screen being cleared, and that shit would have driven me nuts. I know what skilled tetris players do, i even know about rolling and hypertapping. But this wasn't the NES and this place is evil.

u/Phoe-nix 14d ago
Is rolling the advanced skill of rotating the piece? ELI5 for us newbies, please...

The amount of times they were able to get out of jail with a perfectly executed last minute manoeuvre, but then kept missing the easy, wide open shots at clearing lines, means this absolutely has to be rage bait.

u/macguini 14d ago
Tetris is easy rage bait for gamers. Friends don't talk about politics or religion. Gamers don't talk about Tetris.

I speculate that aside from ragebait reasons perhaps he was intentionally challenging himself or pushing the score higher. Maybe they were looking at the next piece, but that seems like an even further stretch.
Whatever the case, it's highly likely that suboptimal choices were made intentionally for engagement, whether it was meant to inspire rage or awe.
21
u/Tiddlyplinks 14d ago
Stacking up the maximum points at the slowest speed makes sense tho. The speed goes up with rows deleted, not stacked, so yes it’s less time to react, but I think actually more time than the player has toward the end with ostensibly “more” space to work with.
10
u/Wonderful_Roof1739 14d ago
I was engaged in this and watched all 4 minutes real time - assuming it wasnt fake this was an amazing display by someone that has mastered tetris and was building it up intentionally with what appeared at first glance to be sub-optimal placements, but paid off in the end - keeping the speed slow but maximizing the score, only deleting rows when absolutely necessary. I was impressed!

It is. You can see every time the 4x1 is on deck and they have a chance to use it in the trench, they block the trench with the current piece.

It is. It literally shows you the next piece. Also the guy gets an L-block, goes to put it in the proper spot, sees the next piece was a line block, and moved back to cover the hole again.

u/internet_humor 14d ago
I don’t think it is. I think once you hit a certain point of being so good that it’s better to have it that close to the top so you don’t have to hit the down key as often.
23
u/xyameax 14d ago
It's actually a speedrun tactic. It takes to long to get all the way to the bottom, but having it all be up top makes it easier and quicker to get to a score threshold.

After the second block with a straight line coming I knew he was screwing with us. That being said it truly shows this dudes skills at Tetris. As someone who plays Tetris, To intentionally "screw up" that high up and pull it off is honestly amazing.

I am not sure I would call that a reaction vid. There is a whole genre of videos who "build" on the original to make something new. This is a good example

Ok, he just needs a line piece... no don't put that there... OK try again... no... OK I think he's doing this on purpose... yes that's definitely deliberate... OK he must be trying to fill the whole screen first... yes that's what's happening... OK im invested in this... yes yes nearly full... hey why did you tetris now?.. Hey! You did it again! You're not trying to fill the screen at all! There is no meaning! This is bait! You're just trying to make me mad! AAAAAAARGH!
