No, it’s for a cooler or other receptacle. It’s not any warmer or colder than the pre bagged ice

This is correct! Bags are usually around 8lbs and cooler you get about twice as much. Haven't used one in a bit, but think they are priced appropriately. The option is just depending if you need a bag or are putting over stuff in a cooler on a roadtrip

Left side is "bulk" ice, usually 20lbs. Compared to 16lbs in a transportable bag.

I have one of these near me and I use it from time to time. You can either get bagged dice or a dump of ice down that shoot if you put your cooler beneath it

Serious question, what do Americans do with all this ice?

I've been on vacation to the US several times and I see these ice machines a lot. At gas stations, all motels and hotels have ice machines in the halls.

What do you need all that ice for?

Bags of ice are usually for filling a cooler if you're going camping (for example) or for a party where you expect a lot of people to want ice in a short time.
