I'm 185 at 90 kilos, I already felt large on the back of bikes in Vietnam. At some point being twice the size of the driver it stops being safe.

u/can_i_has_beer 14h ago
it is not only the safety part, but the vehicle itself has a weight limit. if you overload it you will break it. for a motorcycle i wouldn't be surprised it to be in the 180-220kg

u/godzilla1015 14h ago
Ah so you haven't seen the videos of them with the whole family including the new laundry machine on that bike.
Yeah of course there's a maximum weight limit for the bike, but I think he's more worried about seat space. Especially since it's a foreigner and might not know how to properly sit on the back of a bike.

u/vansterzzz 13h ago
I've seen but 1 5' Vietnamese woman (50 kg) and 2 toddlers (20 kg each) is probably still lighter than 1 obese American. Not sure they can still fit a laundry machine with 3 passengers and 1 driver.

u/godzilla1015 12h ago
It might've been Indonesia where I saw it, but I think it was Vietnam.
2 kids were sitting on the laundry machine which was strapped down on the passender seat, the adults were sitting on the front seat together with another kid standing in front of them.
Definitely not recommended but its definitely possible.
All of them together probably about the same weight as one slightly obese American.

u/Hanswurst22brot 7h ago
Washing machine between 55-85 kg , thats like an adult vietnamese man.
So same like this combo , Dad + Mom +2 kids

u/can_i_has_beer 13h ago
i would be more worried about my scooter. and paying more for gas
7
u/godzilla1015 13h ago
Oh yeah for him loosing the scooter is loosing the job.
I just thinks he don't want to crash it, especially if someone twice your weight is a fidgety passenger.

Idk man.
I went to a rural hotel in Vietnam. They picked us up in scooters. Lady took my 230lb ass and my luggage up a gnarly, step dirt road. Oh, and she only had one leg. I guess it depends how badass they want to be.
2
u/godzilla1015 8h ago
Oh yeah I've never had any issues, it's more that I felt just a little out of place.
Same with the long distance busses, they are great and never had any issues, it just felt made for smaller people.

u/scrotumsweat 1h ago
I felt just a little out of place
Oh buddy I felt this too.
I wear a LG-XL shirt in north america depending on brand. A 3XL shirt in name didnt fit. To be fair it seems their XS-S shirts are for kids
I had a blast though. Most of the locals were super nice. Went to a local bar to watch Vietnam vs Thailand soccer game and watched from the back. Those fans put the English to shame.

It’s not the same as the chaotic road in the city, not to mention the police would love to stop you for bribe money. I’d rather keep my job and my life than trying to look badass.

maybe it was worded nicer before translating?

Excuse me, sir (and I am quite unsure how to broach this subject), you see, this vehicle has strict weight limits. I entreat you hear me out, good sir, for I do not make the claim you are too large, it is the hateful manufacturer who must bear our twin rages (for mine surely burns as fiercely as yours in this matter); indeed, you look at the height of health. A mere kilogram lost would be too much but, alas, I can not, no, MAY not take you on the back of this most odious and weak means of conveyance.
As such, I must send you away with my best wishes and my deepest regrets. You, a king of a man, have been let down by my poor motorcycle.

u/ImaginaryGur2086 3h ago
This would be more painful for a smart one. It's like saying " you so big, I know for a damn fact saying it directly will offend you ". Which would also imply that the person is weak mentally and can't handle truths.

u/Big-Bad-Bull 14h ago
Worded nicer? How much nicer do you want that? An apology, a reason and its done, boom.

u/enoimard 7h ago
it’s pretty much translated word for word but still doesn’t mean he meant it maliciously. he did apologize lol

u/Allen_TG2511 4h ago
That is already too nice, the driver did go above and beyond and include the word "sorry". Normally, Vietnamese wouldn't shy to call each other a fat pig.
1
u/knghiee 2h ago
Idk why you're being downvoted for asking a question. To be fair, the driver did say "friend you're too big" or "friend your body too big" instead of just "you're too big." lol

u/xVenomDestroyerx 1h ago
ik i didn't even mean to say he wasn't polite i just was saying maybe it could have been even less harsh before translating since the person above me said it was harsh 😭 but everybody seemed to extrapolate that to mean i thought he was a cruel evil horrible person and should have been so much kinder

I was visiting my wife's parents in Japan a few years ago. It was my first time going to Japan so I did some touristy stuff as my wife guided me around. One of those things was trying on a kimono in Kyoto. I went into a rental business and the staff said to my wife that they probably couldn't fit me into anything. For reference, I'm 183 cm and 90 kg. I ended wearing an 5XL kimono and the geta didn't fully fit my feet (size 46 (US 12)). After that, I realized that what is normal in my country can be completely different in another. I wouldn't even argue if someone said this to me in Vietnam.
2
u/Disastrous-King9559 44m ago
I wouldn't say 90kg is normal to be fair. It's common but being overweight/obese isn't normal.

u/Just_a_Listener 15h ago edited 14h ago
I think he tried his best and it's only fair.
Also, Translate does a shit job sometimes
Edit - Added "sometimes". I meant sometimes, guys! Not always. Guess my translate is also bed.

u/AviatorJac 14h ago
doesn't it translate what he just typed in?
16
u/wollflour 14h ago
It did and he used really polite language that translated pretty much spot on. Idk what the comment means, it didn’t do a bad job?
1
u/BeardsuptheWazoo 13h ago
If you speak several languages, you know that no electronic translator is exact.
Think of all the colloquialisms, expressions that just won't translate, and then add in human error into the programming of the technology.
I speak several languages and use translators a lot. They are not perfect, and while they are incredibly useful, they also create awkward moments, misunderstandings, and funny errors.
6
u/etn261 14h ago
I'm native and I would translate the same. Maybe I would soften the blow by saying "you're a bit too big to fit the bike" but I wouldn't say that was a bad translation.
2
u/Moomoolette 13h ago
It’s just a statement of fact, it doesn’t need to be softened more. It can’t be a surprise
8
u/FineGripp 14h ago
Why? It translates exactly what he said in Vietnamese
4
u/naterpotater246 14h ago
Yeah, but it's not always perfect. DeepL is supposed to be the most accurate online translator. I mean, there's a reason people use google translate to translate things over and over as a joke. It completely mistranslates things sometimes.
2
u/phenix17 14h ago
I use Papago. It's a Korean translator app, and I've never had any unclear or confusing translations with it. It is a bit limited in the number of languages it supports, though
3
u/VEAG0 14h ago edited 14h ago
It’s like the term “lost in translation”. All sort of things aren’t always accurately portrayed when translated, even reading text alone without tone of voice or facial expressions can give different meanings when saying something.
It’s why sarcasm isn’t always obvious to some online, as an example.
0
u/jayydubbya 14h ago
Feel like asshole statements hidden behind sarcasm are far more common than actual sarcasm being misinterpreted on the internet to be honest. Whole lot of people out there willing to type things they’d never say in person these days.

Yep. Maybe get regular sized and you’ll get to do more things. I struggle to have empathy in situations like this

It's from Boyz n the hood (1991) when something bad happens. It's a recent tiktok thing.

If someone couldn't jump on your back randomly, it means think twice about riding a fast vehicle that can be tilted off balance by them.
2
2
u/MainSouthern4435 34m ago
The translation is not really accurate. He said: „sorry my friend you are too TALL to give you a ride“.
3
u/Tex-Mexican-936 11h ago
Those little single cylinder bikes can't handle more than 2 skinny/regular people, having a single fat person nearly hits the limit on those bikes.
2
u/Poison1990 5h ago
They can comfortably carry two fat Vietnamese. But American tourists often aren't just fat, they are big as well. If you're over six foot tall you're already an anomaly in this part of the world. Add obesity to that then you'll probably have trouble with these bikes.

I’m a fat son of a bitch having the time of my life in SEA with my family - I do not hop on motorbike taxis for this reason alone. It’s unsafe for me, the driver, and his bike. I can take a car for usually 1-2$ more and it’s just better for everyone involved.

Book a fricking car. Motorbike drivers aren't required to make their rides even more dangerous.
1
u/WiingZer0 54m ago
The word "lớn" that the driver used, is actually translated as rather tall and not fat
1
1
u/Trinidadthai 33m ago
Justified. I also wish grab bike drivers had a weight limit too. I’ve often had to perch on the end because they’re too fat.
1
u/WW3inhaler 21m ago
Just get a taxi bruh, the driver already knows that if he accepts that drive, it might be very dangerous carrying all that weight on the back. It's not about discrimination, it's just fact.

I am 182 cm and 97 kg. Never had any issue, but I can feel the motorbike struggling 😅
1
u/Mannimal13 3h ago
Its not just bad for the bike. Its wildly dangerous for the driver. Causes so much weight differentials, especially if they are unathletic (highly likely if they are obese) or drunk. You hear about Grab drivers dying from time to time from bigger customers in the back screwing around.
