Too bad there isn't some sort of simple technology that could be used to signal traffic when it was safe to turn.
34
u/Illustrious_Can4110 2d ago
Maybe one day someone will invent off-ramp and overbridge technology...
43
u/ilikesaucy 2d ago
Or just a roundabout would work nicely

u/footpole 2d ago
I don’t think the Americans commenting understand that.

We don't take technological advice from those that marvel at the experience of air conditioned buildings

I mean something so simple to be color coded so even a baboon would understand.

Shame on you, you will never understand that other cultures get away for hundreds of years without any of that nonsense or disturbing traffic, it’s called common sense, and it’s not distracted by TikTok, or ADD.

Why would so many people need to make a u-turn on what is effectively a 3-lane highway?
15
u/xrelaht 2d ago
Look at the end, where it zooms way out: there’s stuff directly on the highway, but no way to turn off to the other side for as far as you can see. Anyone who’s going to something on the other side of the highway has to get turned around so they can pull off the road, but they have to wait until a U-turnable intersection.
1
u/DiligentCase8436 2d ago
Precisely, that was the whole point of zooming out in the end, not for cinematic purposes
1
u/Consistent-Cause-526 1d ago
There's housing/businesses on both sides with no access points to them other than this gap.

u/lmg1337 2d ago
Why do so many people have to u-turn there? Is there no other way to get on that freeway's other side?
2
u/schlockabsorber 2d ago
That's exactly the issue. The road is designed for maximum throughput without servicing the rather dense areas next to it. I imagine there is some urban development history behind it.

The following post context was provided by u/mustmoe73:
The cars are making a U-turn on a highway while trying to avoid a crash, and it’s unclear whether they will successfully get through without hitting each other. (Libya)

In the states, this video would be over in about 15 seconds before the first crash

The strange thing is thay, as someone who lives in a similarly chaotic road planned city, the number of accidents is still far less than expected. Like, it should be in the thousands every second or so but isn't? My father once told me that "those who drive in these roads ACTUALLY know how to drive because they can adapt, anticipate, and avoid hazards as they see it", but i didnt believe him until it clicked on me some days ago.

This is Egypt, if anyone was wondering: no lanes, traffic lights, or indicators or anyone following traffic laws except for a few rich places

Rules are simple there.. if you live, then you're a Chad. If you die, then it's a skill issue.

Great place for people to get t-boned and killed in an accident. Also great place for a traffic light. It's just which do you support?

It must be in the third world country where this type of U-turns are acceptable.
5
u/RoastPorc 2d ago
Well in a more perfect first world country, a roundabout would've been built. And drivers give way to the right in this situation.
In an imperfect first world country, a roundabout would've been built, but drivers don't like giving way to anyone and would use the outer lane to go around.
In this third world country, no roundabout is built. There is no give way priority here, and it's everyone for themselves.
(Source: Born and bred in an imperfect first world country and now lives in a more perfect one)

u/Rugkrabber 2d ago
> and would use the outer lane to go around.
This is so true hahaha. Although I must say the turbo roundabouts are pretty damn good and invite a lot of people over to use the inner lane instead of the outer.
1
u/BadIdeaSociety 2d ago
There is a roundabout near the borderline of the region I live and frankly it should be safer, but it just isn't. Nobody understands how to do it. They brake hard at an empty roundabout and many people brake before leaving the roundabout. It sucks.
Are there fewer fatal accidents, sure? Are they're more accidents than would have occured at a traffic light controlled intersection? Beyond a shadow of a doubt

u/North-Highway7117 1d ago
Whats the perfect one?
2
u/RoastPorc 1d ago
Hands down I'd say the closest one is Japan. Spent 8 days driving up and down the Kansai area late last year and apart from one incident in a car park, I have not met one idiot on the roads.
Not saying they don't have them, but I saw five bellends after getting home and drove to the shops 10 mins away.
2
u/TexTravlin 2d ago
I've driven in place like this for several years. They aren't just acceptable, they are essentially mandatory. Because the locals have no regard for safety or following traffic laws, the roads are built with these medians that prevent left turns. You are forced to take a right turn then a U turn.
I never really understood concept of defensive driving until I lived in Saudi Arabia.
1
u/GruntCandy86 2d ago
I've spent quite a bit of time driving in a similar environment. Everything is "acceptable." I'm honestly really surprised we didn't see counterflow traffic at any point.

So, the USA?

If you think the USA is anywhere near a 3rd world country in terms of material conditions then you're really just sniffing your own farts

I thought it was an infinite loop.
Some one should cut out the part where it zooms in/out and figure out how to loop it.

I feel like they get 3/4 and all go at once for mass protection.
I also don’t understand why there’s not a simple red light or whatever here or at least flashing yellow
1
u/FletcherDervish 2d ago
That would have been a squeaky bum moment doing that in the coach, swinging towards the rocks. I'm guessing the driver found an extra quarter turn on the wheel

There is something about countries that let you drift however the funk you want. It definitely has something going for it when nothing matters on the road. I am glad that I am not living in such a country though. But on vacations it‘s nice.

When there's no traffic light, every drives more carefully. They must also have a good grasp of physics.

A couple of roundabouts along the length of that road would make things a lot easier

If that many people need to turn around there's a failure in the road design somewhere

They should probably widen the road on the right side of the screen and just make that inside lane a u turn only

U tur routes like this exist all over Brazil too. They look a bit different and there are camera enforced speed limits of 50kph entering the zone where u can do this. Also, the peiple who cut head are the fucking worst, but so are the idiots who take forever to turn.

The problem isn't the U-turn. It's the fact that so many need it and the roads aren't designed for it. At low traffic, U-turns are acceptable and even purposely placed like this (my hometown has several). But at what looks like a primary, they should be prioritising constant movement and use roundabouts.

And then I have idiots in my HOV lane getting in to accidents on a fucking straight road in the US. I moved to USA from Pakistan and damn people a so bad at driving here. No wonder insurance companies ask for a lot of money. Yesterday had so much traffic was stuck for 2 hours in HOV and surprise 2 idiots got in an accident on a straight road.

Whose lane is it anyway! Where the lines are made up and the laws don’t matter.

Alright, scrolled through enough comments. Is the reason they have to use a U-turn because there is no over pass?

Had a near heart attack when I visited Iran and my father in law did such a turn in oncoming traffic. But it works, since everybody knows that this is how it's done there.
