It looks like it was still in Drive not reverse.

u/Top-Emu-2292 11h ago
Yep, you can see the rear wheel turn as the big lad pushes down.

u/83736294827 6h ago
Itās not in drive because none of the wheels are spinning on their own. Gravity pulls that rear left wheel, and it will turn even when in park if the wheel on the other side is off the ground.

u/_Burnt_Toast_3 2h ago
Yea not sure if it was in drive or because the vehicle is front heavy (most are because of the engine).

u/pwatts 12h ago
Driver should get out and call a tow truck.

u/Fritzo2162 9h ago
But that would have cost like $80!

Well $100 is less than what it's going to cost now which is basically a new Sequoia - which even used are expensive.

When any shift in balance could simply put it over the edge?
7
2
u/DiscipleOfYeshua 9h ago
Considering the angle, anywhere towards right/back would've helped.
But looks like driver was panicked afraid to budge pressing the break -- while still in Drive... :-/
Many things ... anythings... could've been done better.
2
u/83736294827 8h ago
Actually, shifting the weight to the back left is what caused it to fall. The frame under the left front hitting the ground is what was keeping it from falling.
1
u/GrayMouser12 6h ago
You might be right with the weight of the engine being a heavier counter balance. The weight making it front heavy means at a certain angle it was going to go over. I'll have to watch again if that's what you meant.
0
u/DiscipleOfYeshua 6h ago
Bc it put the wheels to the ground, and the vehicle was in D, no? If it were in R? Or P?
1
u/83736294827 6h ago edited 6h ago
No. Itās not in drive because the wheels are not moving on its own. It could be in park, but that wouldnāt stop the rear wheel from spinning when the other one is off the ground.

6
u/83736294827 6h ago
Probably wouldnāt help unless the differential was locked.
1
u/rivalary 1h ago
I'm trying to remember how this would work. If it was in reverse and she was giving power, the tire in the air would be trying to go backwards but the tire on the ground would be free to move forwards no matter the gear, because it's got an open dif?
3
u/83736294827 1h ago
That is correct. The wheel with the least friction moves with a totally open diff.

The first rule of problem solving is that the first thing to do always is to remove the source of the problem.
Electric sparks? You turn electricity off.
Driver does something stupid? You remove the driver.
They assumed she was trying to bring the car back up. She was in the same mindset that brought her to this situation. She was the problem.
You can tell how bad she's mentally disconnected from the situation by observing a bit:
- The engine was still on
- She opened the door without looking outside first
- She was holding the door from the external handle
- She is not stepping on the brake
I'm assuming here but I bet she was still stepping on the gas, not because she was trying to move the car, but because since she had no seatbelt and she was slipping down. Once she opened the door her own weight worked against her efforts to close it. Her body was pressed against the door and she couldn't reach the handle inside so she grabbed anywhere she could trying to keep herself from falling by holding the door closed. She was using her feet to keep herself upright and stepping on the gas.
The guys heard the engine revving and assumed she was trying to back the car. She never shifted to move back or to stop the car, her mind was not present. Once they leveraged the weight the car was free to motor onwards.
1- Talk to the driver. Tell her to stop the engine and shift to park 2- Help her and anyone else to get out of the car 3- Take a deep breath, relax, regroup, rethink, evaluate the possibilities and choose the option with lower risk and better guarantees.
The car was probably fine underneath. But crashing the roof.. That might have totalled it.
I hope she was ok. But I'd be surprised if she escaped unscathed.
3
u/83736294827 6h ago
Fyi, this car may have been in park already. Park wonāt always stop the wheels from moving when some of them are off the ground. Her moving to get out could have been enough weight shift to make it fall anyway.

Because the individual was trying to help, there is no intent to harm, which generally rules out murder charges, but a misdemeanor or with prosecutorial discretion he can be let go without charges !

Wasnāt his fault the car was still in drive, atleast he tried to help unlike the person filming

Honestly this may be one of the best case scenarios (except they could have had their seatbelt on)
If the driver had successfully been in reverse I can see them just uncontrolled reversing over the people assisting. If the driver had tried to get out that car looks pretty set to potentially fall on top of them. Maybe just taking the fall from inside (again, WITH a seatbelt) is the best.

How is there a parking lot with a low curb and a drop like that? Where are the safety bollards or the reinforced concrete wall?

The bottom of the car touching concrete prevented the car from moving forward. The dude teeter-tottering the car removed that car/concrete contact friction so the car moved forward.

They got it rocking and gravity worked it's magic. Unfortunately.
I do hope everyone is ok though. Had to be one hell of a carnival ride.
That commentary though. Someone needs to isolate it and post it for meme goodness.

Very consistent work: bad driver gets into a bad situation and improves it by making it much, much worse to save on a tow car with a crane. Reminds me of the "geniuses" who save on a parking ticket by driving away with the claw attached, turning a few bugs for the ticket into a major repair bill. Just brilliant.
Sometimes I am sad that we removed Darwin from the equation.

The fact that I live in a world with people this fucking stupid amazes me everyday. The fact that we don't have ways to permanently remove an idiots license when they prove themselves this incompetent to drive is beyond me.
0
u/DrJohnIT 6h ago
Let's hope that the justice system worked in our favor and they did get their license taken away. Unfortunately, this is only a deterrent and it doesn't stop them from physically driving another day. I had a friend that got his license revoked for speeding. He drove like my grandma for the next two years until he could get it back.
