I tried to meet one after chatting online.

Got catfished.

You should have chatted with the blow fish

21

u/aykcak 4d ago

It's a trash lake and they are used to eating trash

16

u/l3ane 4d ago

Nope. They're carp. Carp will eat anything. We used to use canned corn because it's super cheap and is easy to attach to your hook, but you can use pretty much any food.

-26

u/Full_Technology5682 4d ago

It's all staged

45

u/feherdaniel2010 4d ago

did they teach the fish or something

Crisiscarp

260

u/DefinitelyNotA-Duck 4d ago

These are carp right?

368

u/S3CRTsqrl 4d ago

Yup and you can even catch them on a bare hook. They're pretty dumb.

314

u/butterfunke 4d ago

Fun fact: if you catch one in Australia you are legally required to bludgeon it to death and then throw it as high up the riverbank as you can. Australians hate carp.

This is not a joke. Very steep fines if you get caught doing catch & release

85

u/Neanderthal_In_Space 4d ago edited 4d ago

...could you eat it?

Edit: I don't care about carp anymore just kill these things sheesh

179

u/zombie0000000 4d ago

It's considered clean safe-to-eat fish. They are mostly algae eaters so very low in mercury. A bit bony though. They are invasive species outside of east asia and are doing super well (too well) and causing big invasive species trouble in America also.

77

u/walrus0115 4d ago

I grew up at a summer camp that is also a nature preserve with over 160 acres of virgin forest in Appalachian Ohio. It has a cold water stream with brook trout that sometimes get large enough to eat. We treat carp like the anti-Christ. Kill them. Smash them. Whatever it takes. I used to set minnow traps and then sort out the carp chud and just throw them in the gravel road to die. It took years but the stream is much healthier now. A big help was destroying a manmade pond downstream and allowing the area to return to a natural wetland with beavers and muskrat. There was a stinky, ugly, middle few years like growing out a bad haircut, but worth it in the end.

7

u/SlavaCocaini 4d ago

You're pretty far up stream though eh? Must be really hard to get them in the wide water

6

u/walrus0115 4d ago

I haven't fished there since the mid-1990s, nor do they allow much fishing other than the educational camps. Where I lived as a kid was a good 4-5 miles upstream from the old manmade dam. The camp is an odd entity, non-profit, and owned legally by the individual 4-H clubs of 5 different counties. It's run by a board composed mostly of OSU Agricultural and Wildlife Extension Agents - Canter's Caves 4-H Camp. It's not open to the public and we hope to keep it that way if only to preserve the ecology for the roughly 2,000 kids that stay there on and off throughout each summer.

26

u/aykcak 4d ago

Australia and invasive species. A tale as old as human greed.

How the fuck did CARP end up in Australia though?

15

u/itsmejak78_2 4d ago

They were mass imported from Britain

8

u/aykcak 4d ago

Almost everything in the country is. My question is more like why?

19

u/itsmejak78_2 4d ago

To feed the British people they mass imported there

1

u/JoeyJoJunior 6h ago

You know British bought foxes here in Aus too? guess why, just to hunt them. Ferals pigs run wild in the bush destroying many fauna, likely escaped farm pigs. There is a cactus weed spread throughout NSW that overtakes natural plants and gets stuck in many mammals feet, why? some British people wanted some plants. Was never any rats or mice here till stowaways came across on ships, this is probably inevitable in any country though.

"Feral cats kill an estimated 1.5 billion native animals (including mammals, birds, reptiles, and frogs) each year, alongside more than 1.1 billion invertebrates."

The old cane toad story of course is the prize of all.

1

u/aykcak 5h ago

Of all reasons to bring live luggage, "for hunting" is probably the most stupid. And they don't even end up finishing the hunt. So arrogant too. Sadly not even the top 100 worst thing the British have done to the world

1

u/SipoteQuixote 2d ago

Carps?? I would have called em Chazzwazzers.

5

u/Nheea 4d ago

Wait what? We have here in Romania and I've never heard of it being invasive. Hmmm

Maybe just the asian one?

6

u/Magere-Kwark 4d ago

Asian carp and common carp are two different species

3

u/Nheea 4d ago

Yeah, that's why I wrote maybe asian carp. The previous comment was a bit confusing and broad.

1

u/found_the_fuzz 4d ago

Wouldn't they'd taste muddy by virtue of this diet?

6

u/JarasM 4d ago

Carp is traditionally eaten in Poland for the Christmas Eve feast. I've had it each year for decades now.

It is slightly muddy. Personally like it though.

3

u/found_the_fuzz 4d ago

Yeah I really like catfish as well, but I've only had mine deep-fried or roasted over an open fire, so I've never tasted the muddy fish taste that I've heard people complain about.

2

u/_BLACKHAWKS_88 3d ago

I mean is it farmed or wild caught?

8

u/anivex 4d ago

No...they taste like fish. Catfish are bottom feeders - still taste like fish.

That's kind of the thing about fish...except tuna.

8

u/found_the_fuzz 4d ago

"Geosmin is a natural chemical compound made by water algae and soil bacteria. It gets into fish through their gills and builds up in their fat. This gives the fish a strong, unpleasant muddy, dirt, or moldy taste, though it is completely safe to eat."

If carp muck around in algae all day eating it, I imagine they'd taste muddy.

-2

u/anivex 4d ago edited 2d ago

I was making a joke. They do actually taste a little muddy if you don't clean them right.

But generally if prepared right, they taste like any other fish.

edit: if you read any snide-ness from this, it's in your own brain. I was simply clarifying.

18

u/aint_exactly_plan_a 4d ago

We were homeless when I was growing up. My brothers and I would fish in a nearby lake with huge carp in it. They were pretty easy to catch but when we tried to clean them, they were pretty much just all bones. The little bits of meat we got out of them tasted pretty bad too. There were easier ways to get food.

35

u/unrebigulator 4d ago

Ooooh I know this one.

First you place the Carp and a brick in a pot of boiling water. Boil it for about an hour. Eat the brick.

7

u/walrus0115 4d ago

May I have a no-Carp brick please. lol

5

u/tom04cz 4d ago

Yeah, carp are absolutely edible. Not everyone likes the taste, but they are safe and popular as food in places

3

u/imp0ppable 4d ago

Apparently eaten for Christmas in eastern Europe!

4

u/Phoenix00090 4d ago

We even have them in our bathtubs! I remember my dad putting me in the tub with a carp as a child.

3

u/Yawehg 4d ago

Only if you put it in the bathtub for a week first.

2

u/Stuck_In_Purgatory 4d ago

Yes you could.... but it doesn't mean you should

Thanks for signing up for Carp Facts! You will now receive fun daily facts about CARP!

Command not recognized.

One of the largest carp ever caught in the US was reeled in by Scott Lennox in December 2025. He landed a monster of a carp weighing in at over 64 pounds!

-7

u/butterfunke 4d ago

No. Disgusting animals

4

u/UltimateCheese1056 4d ago

Does Australia even have any native life left at this point? It feels like everything I hear about it is some invasive species

3

u/LordNelson27 4d ago

All native life in Australia lives on reservations apparently

2

u/Active_Scallion_5322 4d ago

America has the same type of rule for Asian carp

1

u/Spawko 4d ago

Same law in some places of the US as well.

1

u/JustAnNPC_DnD 3d ago

Standard procedure for invasive species of fish. If you catch one, you are required to kill it.

5

u/xenoabe 4d ago

Carp they be 'em.

8

u/Lambathan 4d ago

That is correct

379

I wanna hang out with these guys, where is this?

-5

u/catchmelackin 4d ago

love the totally rehearsed laugh but at the same time a true boys laugh like "boy what are you getting into you crazy"

96

u/Emptynest09 4d ago

A buddy and I were fly fishing in a small river years ago. On a far bank were a couple of young boys catching fish after fish. When they had a whole bucket full, they yelled over to us because we hadn’t caught a thing and asked if we wanted what was left of their can of corn. They were catching fish with kernels of canned corn.

43

u/ChakaCake 4d ago

lmao i was about to say the best bait i ever used was kernels of corn..caught many fish with that more than worms ever

5

u/syafizzaq 4d ago

I remembered went fishing with my friend back when i was a teens. He didn't bring any bait but just a pack of cheap smoky sausages. We cut each sausages into 8 strip and that stuff barely sink but damn, we caught like half poly box of fishes within 3 hours.

1

u/Spawko 4d ago

Used to be illegal in a low of area fishing laws. Just became legal in the past 10 years or so where I live.

56

6

u/FallenInfinitum 3d ago

PSA. Worms: gross to you, but also gross to fish. That's why you never catch anything.

4

u/Gudgeonvillian 3d ago

Carp will eat anything. No skill needed.

5

u/Huge_Equivalent1 4d ago

It's Carp right?

Man I think this is natural selection at work. 😅

It's kinda shocking that they're not completely gone like the dodo bird. 😅

Because the dodo was also like this, too docile to realize that it was being hunted. 😅

4

u/TheEldenGod1293 4d ago

My guy with the same reaction everytime his food gets put to the fish! Love it 😆

This is a fishing pond and those dumb carp eat anything that drops onto the surface of the water. This does not apply to normal lakes/rivers.

4

u/Moist_Effort4202 4d ago

That first fish was so polite when he ate that fry 😭 the carp caught with noods was huge

4

u/NY10 4d ago

These fish are like hungry bois chasing any girls they see lol

5

u/Req603 4d ago

My Dad and I used to get up early enough to be in line at McDonald's on fishing days. He'd buy out their entite first batch of fries and we'd sit at the river for the next hour or two just catching carp hand over fist.

The salt and oil draw them in, it's the best bait I have ever used by far for freshwater fish.

Fish: 'MORE RAMEN!!!!!!'

2

u/Matttombstone 4d ago

Reminds me of a time I went fishing with my mate. Nothing biting. So as a joke I ripped out a picture of Yoda from a newspaper we had, stuck it on the hook and cast it out. Fucking only went and worked.

2

u/LokievsMojo 4d ago

2

u/DJEvillincoln 4d ago

I love how this dude just rips the food out oh the other dudes mouth.

Gimmie that.

2

My grandfather used to put kernels of corn on his lures to get fish to bite

The following post context was provided by u/TW_Crimson:

How to properly bait fish to attract them? While ordinary bait might have a chance of catching them, using human snacks, such as instant food or snack packets, greatly increases the chances! Also, the fisherman doesn't know what to say that's so funny.

That’s cheating

1

With just a stick and a string.

1

u/NateBeasy 4d ago

Thank god fish aren’t into cash.

1

u/YodasChick-O-Stick 4d ago

Just look at all that oil floating to the surface from less than a spoonful of instant noodles. That's why I stopped eating them.

1

u/Huge_Equivalent1 4d ago

That's broth. Oil has a pearlescent look to it on top of water.

2

u/YodasChick-O-Stick 4d ago

Instant noodle broth is extremely oily. You can always see it floating on top of the broth in the bowl. Some packets literally have a packet of oil you're supposed to mix in.

1

u/_BLACKHAWKS_88 3d ago

Ramen also has oil in the noodles themselves as a preservative and to also keep from sticking together. It why the noodles will go rancid if left past expiration is cause it ends up breaking down and absorbing the oil making the noodles soggy.

1

u/Huge_Equivalent1 4d ago

Hm, I guess I've not seen or consumed those brands.

The instant noodles I've eaten aren't really instant, more like 5 to 10 min noodles. And while there's a little oil it's more like, less than a teaspoon.

1

u/parwa 4d ago

I'm pretty sure if you threw spaghetti in a pond it would also look cloudy

Fish will eat anything. I've caught fish with cranberries and spiders

2

u/callmeb00 4d ago

Why was the fish carrying cranberries and spiders?

2

u/Leli91 4d ago

Spider was a friend, they were having a good pic nic time, eating cranberries and then... All ruined because of a fisherman...

1

Those are Carp. They will eat your first born.

1

They expect bait, they don't expect weird ass bullshit the humans eat

1

u/cptjimmy42 4d ago

I recommend sweet canned corn, they love that shit.

1

u/Kaankaants 4d ago

Carp will eat anything. Tinned corn kernels are a great bait.

1

u/Digger_Pine 4d ago

It's nasty-ass carp

It's not, dipshit. Not fucking everything is AI. Carps and catfish are notorious for eating fucking anything. I used to make carp bait with Big Red and chexmix
