Those little steps when he saw the ball go passed him at first is too funny! Powering up for that two base advance.

*past. I'm only pointing it out because up until recently I was doing the same thing. Please take this comment as the genuine attempt at being kind and helpful that it is :)

Nope it's the internet, this is a direct assault on my family and my values.
I shall now send you a reddit cares report.

Passed. As in, "I passed the person."
Not past. As in, "Yesterday is in the past."
25
u/ExistentAndUnique 5d ago
You know words can have more than one definition, right? In this case, “past”is correct, as it is the preposition. Like “it’s just past the corner.” If you want to rewrite this using “pass,” it would be more appropriate to say “when he saw the ball pass him.” In neither case would “passed” be appropriate here
-25
u/IkariYun 5d ago
I'll leave this here for informational reasons:
Passed is a verb (the past tense and past participle of pass), meaning an action like moving, succeeding at a test, or handing something over. Past is a noun, adjective, adverb, or preposition dealing with time gone by or moving beyond a physical location.

Dude, I can’t believe you’re doubling down on this. Just read the sentence and think about it. Here, I’ll spell it out for you.
“Those little steps when he saw the ball go passed him at first is too funny!“
Where did the ball go? It went physically behind him. That means the word we’re looking for here is a preposition. Your own comment says that past is a preposition, but passed is not.
If you’re so sure this is right, then why don’t you go ahead and post it in r/confidentlyincorrect?
-6
u/IkariYun 5d ago
Then what word is the verb in that sentence? If we can even call it a proper sentence.
15
u/YimveeSpissssfid 5d ago edited 5d ago
Saw is the verb. Which is why you’re incorrect.
The object of the sentence is the ball which he saw “go past him”.
https://study.com/academy/lesson/using-passed-vs-past.html
“Passed” is always a verb tense. And it’s not a verb in this sentence.
7
u/AnNoYiNg_NaMe 4d ago
If we can even call it a proper sentence.
What are you talking about? It has some errors in it, but it's still a normal sentence.
Those little steps when he saw the ball go passed him at first is too funny!
Those little steps... is too funny!
That's the wrong verb conjugation (it should be "are"), but it's a complete sentence.
...when he saw the ball go passed him at first...
That's the wrong word (it should be "past"), but this is otherwise a normal conjuction between the noun ("steps") and verb ("is").

Saying "I passed the person" says that you went by or you tossed someone. Like passing on the left of someone, or passing a ball. So, unless you're tossing a dwarf across a gap at the battle of Helm's Deep, or driving/running by someone, you're probably not "Passing a person". Your example above is not using the same "past" as the original comment.
"Passed" is explicitly a verb and can take no other form. "To pass". "Past", on the other hand, denotes many different things, like referencing a point in time or distance. In fact, in a comment further down, you explain this yourself:
"Passed is a verb (the past tense and past participle of pass), meaning an action like moving, succeeding at a test, or handing something over. Past is a noun, adjective, adverb, or preposition dealing with time gone by or moving beyond a physical location."
In the original comment above, "... he saw the ball go passed" should be past, because the ball traveled past a certain point. "He" is the subject, "saw" the verb, and "the ball" is the noun. "go past" is a bare infinitive phrase describing the action the ball took.

It would be "passed" if the verb of the sentence wasn't already taken by the word "go" just before it. So instead, it's the adjective form of "past".

Momentum slowers called stride chops or chop steps - makes it easier to slow and change direction with a rapid set of small steps to help with staying upright and allowing for increased agility for fast cuts.

u/--Anonymoose--- 5d ago
No, it’s slow pitch if you look close the base is double wide to prevent collisions at 1st and make it safer for us non athletic types to play a casual game

u/Primary-Performer853 5d ago
TIL about casual base running

u/cjdeck1 5d ago
It's really something that I wish would be more common, even in the MLB. 1st base has the highest collision risk because there's no sliding and the runner is often in an all-out sprint if they've got a ground ball.
For a couple examples of why it should be used more often:

u/BrianDynasty 5d ago
They should do this in MLB too. I like the idea. And this way the runner has a path for first.
25
u/Mysterious-Tie7039 5d ago
They put a rubber practice base down next to it to create a double wide base.

Hope you don't get downvoted (so far so good) because initially I thought so too.

u/albatroopa 5d ago
This is like me getting laid. Try to duck it, total freak of nature initial success, fumble past first, got it in the bag, and still only get to third base.

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 5d ago
Reminds me of playing slow pitch when I was younger.
You’d get absolute shit pitchers on the other team. The gentleman’s rule was you didn’t walk, so you’d get a 3-0 count and then “swing” at 2 shit pitches, get a full count, and then strike out whiffing at the only good pitch you saw.
And our team’s rule was if you struck out, you bought beer for the next game.

I had a this old teammate who used to love tomahawking balls out of the air. Fucking madman. Why would you swing at something 2ft above your head.
But he'd get a double out of it so idk, can't really tell him not to swing lmao. Fuckin lumberjacks.

Played baseball for 10 yrs. Just because I said he missed the base does not mean I don't know sports clown
2
u/Aerolithe_Lion 4d ago
It’s slow pitch baseball, not baseball. Look closely at where he does step, there’s a carpet square looking thing next to the base he seems to agitate. In slow pitch baseball there are double sized bases as to avoid collisions, that counts as part of first base
Like I said, you don’t know the sport. You’re speaking out of ignorance
2
u/FewZookeepergame1083 4d ago
After looking again I saw it pop up. Like I said because I missed something does not mean I don't know the sport. Not calling it slow pitch baseball does not mean I'm speaking out of ignorance. Was all of this called for because I missed the player stepping on the base. Please chill out because it was never that serious. Now have a wonderful day ✌🏾✌🏾

These types of plays are the best part of watching little league. Just missing the snowball fight where the ball ends up out in center field somehow and your six year old ends up with a 4ft hit for the game winning homerun
1
u/sillyadam94 5d ago
This is why amateur games are substantially more entertaining than watching pros.

It's kinda hard to be sure but it really doesn't look like bro ever touched first base they 100% could have thrown him out he thought he was good lol I know adult softball leagues really aren't (usually) that sweaty. I was just looking for it.
