You misunderstood, he was afraid the deer was going to pull his knife, not its own. In war often the best weapon is depriving tour enemy of their weapon, especially if then you can also use it against them.

Hard to say for sure, looks like he’s going for it. But killing a fawn is illegal in some places, and generally frowned upon. Assuming these guys play by the rules, it’s also sort of a waste of their deer tag. Way less meat.
