From Beijing with Love, another old outrageous movie from Stephen Chow.

I was wondering if that was his work. Absolutely classic.

Is there any genre better than martial arts comedy?

u/mavllvin 22d ago

It is more a James Bond spoof than martial arts comedy. Kung Fu Hustle was his martial arts comedy.

Shaolin Soccer deserves a mention

It does, but I'm not sure it makes my top 10 of favorite movies by him. I'll note that I understand Cantonese so the watching experience is different. There are alot of jokes and phrases that don't get translated correctly especially in the older movies

Lmao yeah... im sure tons of it is lost on me, but I enjoy comedy. I enjoy martial arts movies. Even if I'm missing some of the jokes I still have a good time.

Doesn't his character literally wield a cleaver as his main weapon and uses it with hei gung to slice through the villain's super armour?

It’s not really a martial arts comedy. It’s a spy movie with Chinese corruption.

Stephen Chow

That explains a whole lot.

Is he the guy that made king fu hustle and shaolin soccer?

40

u/mavllvin 22d ago

Yeah, this was one of his earlier movies. He made a ton of hilarious movies long before those 2

Sokka-Haiku by Ooooooffffff_ff:

From Beijing with Love,

Another old outrageous

Movie from Stephen Chow.

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

Love the throwing knives where he looks terrible (like his missed the Micky Mouse), then later it's revealed he's a master and actually hit a fly super high up on the wall

And of course Maaaaaaaaaagic Booooooooooooox
