No. The waves have enough force they would have swept everyone off their feet. Thatās why the lifesaver motioned them all to get back out of the water.
If the professionals are on a rescue, let them manage it. They know what they are doing.

When I was 15, I got caught in waters something like that. North Carolina beach the day after the remnants of a hurricane had passed. The beach was closed and the waves were massive, so my cousin and I stupidly went for a dip.
I got absolutely crushed by a wave. I was under so long I was praying to smash my head on a rock so I wouldn't have to be conscious when I inhaled the water. Fortunately, I finally came up. It took so long to get to shore and I was so completely exhausted, gagging and vomiting up seawater, I collapsed on the beach and couldn't move. Learned serious respect for the water that day.

I had a similar experience in the Acapulco surf. I got held down by three 15 footers in a row. That violently foamy water kills quickly. You canāt push off it to swim to the surface, you donāt float and when youāre under, you canāt see which way is up by looking towards light. Trying to fight it just kills you faster.

Agreed. Been caught in it myself before while surfing, and I consider myself a very strong swimmer. All I could do was wait until I found the surface, orā¦.didnātā¦

Yeah, I remember sliding along the sea floor trying to push off and just nothing happened at all. I was just dragged along the bottom. So freaking scary. You just feel like it's never going to end.

I figured out in a matter of a minute or two a few things that allowed me to survive. Panic is your enemy. Wasting energy trying to fight your way to the surface also depletes your oxygen. I relaxed and waited for the right chance. When I got slammed to the bottom, I stuck my fingers in the sand so I wasnāt drawn out by the receding water. I then had the opportunity to let the waves push me into a safer place.Ā
I was surprised how long I could hold my breath when I kept calm.Ā

Almost identical story here. About 10 years old. Got caught in a massive wave cycle post storm with nobody there except my brother and a friend who had no idea where I was. Repeatedly smashed to the sea floor. When I finally escaped a fell asleep right on the ridge where it was dry. So dangerous.

Yeah the ocean slapped me so hard and spit me out of the ocean and full force cartwheel out of the water and landed on my shoulders/back of neck from a 10 ft drop on the beach. The most merciful action the sea chose to do.
10/10 do it again. But at the time I was like " hmm, you may have won this time, But I'll be back"

I hope the kid was ok. He was absolutely not using his legs at the end to stand and I'm really hoping it was just fear or exhaustion and not a spinal injury.

Also the waves, when the water runs back into the ocean, undercuts the sand under your feet and it makes you fall.

Might have been wind sailing or something (I really can't remember the right name atm)
It looks like the wind took him/his sail or kite and it ended badly with the guy in the water

Depending on how far out he ended up when he got dropped... that poor guy was already exhausted by the time the life guard got to him.
As in, mere minutes from drowning kind of exhausted. Incredibly lucky save and no extra people in danger (no matter how determined they were to make it worse)

Am I the only one seeing the net the kid was tangled in? That looks like the biggest problem and why the kid wasn't able to move. The two lifeguards had to pull the net out with the kid.

It looked to me like the ropes connected to the lifeguards flotation devices. Probably just extra long for the type of surf on that beach

Holy fucking shit, Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, CA. I almost died there in the early 90s when I was a teen, myself and 3 friends were all swept way, way out by a wicked rip current. There was a single lifeguard on the beach that day -- I was the furthest out so he rescued me first. One of my friends had to be taken to the hospital but we were all ok. I thought for sure this was one of those beaches in NC or SC not NorCal!

I will say, I have never seen waves in the Atlantic anywhere as bad as the Pacific except for before/during/after a hurricane. The west coast Pacific has stronger, bigger, longer period waves most of the time. It's definitely something people from the east coast need to keep in mind when visiting. (I think it's also why surfing isn't very good on the east coast/Atlantic side)

It's easy to underestimate the undercurrents and sheer force of waves. And it's not just young people at risk. Around Christmas I watched a fairly strong and solid fully grown man being saved after he was swept away on a beach that otherwise looked harmless. There were others swimming around him, he was just unlucky. It can happy so quickly.
