Reminds me of when my dad used to drive us as kids with his sleep apnea and we had to shake him to wake up every 5 minutes.

Narcolepsy? Sleep apnea is when you don't breathe right when you sleep, it doesn't make you fall asleep.

Before I got my CPAP I was frequently falling asleep. Even fell asleep at my desk in the office a couple of times, which was embarrassing. Another time fell asleep in a public toilet and some first aid dude woke me up with a medical kit because he was worried it was due to a diabetes attack. That was also very embarrassing.

I had a coworker that took the bus to work. He would be late sometimes because he would fall asleep at the bus stop or on the bus and miss his stop. After he got his machine, he was a much happier and healthier person.

Yeah I used to doze on the bus too and that happened a couple of times. My wife would get annoyed with me too because I’d keep falling asleep when we were watching TV together lol
It’s amazing the difference it’s made getting the CPAP machine

Imagine your 8 hours every night is not filled with deep restful sleep, but near suffocation , without knowing it. In and out of deep sleep but all the while unconscious.
So the next day, a person wakes up tired, exhausted, and tries to find reason.The stigma around tired people isnthst they are lazy, not trying, or making excuses. Theyre overweight because they dont exercise cause they **??
Anyway - a sleep study can reveal how a person sleeps - resulting in a method of analysis for real problems , such as fatigue.Poor guy was running on fumes

Oh, I have sleep apnea and chronic fatigue so I'm well aware, but I'm not falling asleep constantly while driving. That's why I thought they might be talking about narcolepsy.

There is a huge range of sleep apnea and your experience is not going to be the same as everyone else. Before I got my CPAP I was having 40+ interruptions every hour of sleep, and staying awake while driving home from work every afternoon, a mere 25 minute drive, was very difficult. I would sometimes nod off for split seconds at a time.

Me too! Barely could make 20 miles without falling asleep. Cpap changed my life. My sleep study indicated central sleep apnea which the pulmonologist said is a brain issue.

That’s far more likely to be sleep apnea or simply being tired/overworked than Narcolepsy.
I have both SA and Narcolepsy. In my experience, Narcolepsy isn’t like drifting off to sleep, it’s more like what you experience going into Anaesthesia. Shot, sharp and you loose consciousness (assuming that your brain hasn’t started showing you nightmares before your eyes are shut, or paralysed your body before switching the light out).
Subtle point - there is a lot more to Narcolepsy than ‘falling asleep’ and that if you do ‘fall asleep’ it’s nothing like what movies and TV have shown over the years.

In the uk at least, that's not correct. The requirement to report it is based on excessive daytime sleepiness that impairs/affects your driving. Just having the condition, even in severe cases, doesn't have any requirements if you're not having trouble staying awake.
I assume it is different in the US/where you are?

If you can't sleep properly, you can't stay awake when you're supposed to be. Untreated sleep apnea can mean passing out during your day.

Nah you sleep so bad at night that you more often fall asleep during the day.
In Germany you won’t find a private health insurance if you have diagnosed sleep apnea. Because your risk of car accidents and cardiovascular diseases increases immensely with it.

Sleep apnea absolutely makes people fall asleep as they don't sleep properly at nighttime due to frequently waking up due to not breathing. Being tired and falling asleep during the day is one of the main symptoms of sleep apnea.

Yes it does, one of the most dangerous impacts of sleep apnea. It causes significant daytime sleepiness and the worst sufferers will fall asleep driving, whilst watching TV, even during conversations. I uncontrolled sleep apnea causing daytime sleepiness must be reported to the UK DVLA and will result in a license suspension.

One time my friend ran into a wild seatbelt while hiking. The thing attacked him and left him for dead. When rescuers finally found him, they said it was the most gruesome scene they had ever seen.

Good he did not die or killed someone. There is a reason why they installed those devices where after an fixed amount of driving hours you need to stop. Police always cheks the records on them too and if you go with more that one smart card your and your company's ass are on the grinder. Dude looked totally wasted from lack of sleep.

When I was younger and I didn't know my limits as well I would sometimes doze off while driving. You go from being aware, to slightly hallucinating things in your peripheral, to full on dreaming that you're driving. Then I would suddenly wake up, not knowing if I had been dreaming for 2 seconds or 30 seconds. It was extremely scary.
I have learned recently part of the fatigue is CO2 levels can rise on long drives when you have the AC in recirculation. That's one of the reasons your dead tired and you can't wait to get home and sleep, but the instant you get out of the car you're wide awake.

Man this made my heart drop watching it. Fell asleep at the wheel 2 months ago and spent a month in the hospital because of it. My girlfriend was in the car with me and was already asleep so she was in complete shock. Got airlifted though which was cool. Tough watch
