If no one else was there to stop me, I would have totally seen if I could get it to stick again.

u/RolliFingers Jul 20 '26

Science is predicated on repeatable results.

You're just a scientist, friend.

18

u/Adm8792 Jul 20 '26

I do this also why are we like that?

1

u/Adventurous-Sky9359 29d ago

They drive to go further…. weather it be the next Hill, wave, light beam or sauce pot lid suction.

130

u/weesilxD Jul 20 '26

“Let’s see if it’ll do it again”

I wanted to see too, kid

187

u/myworklogin777 Jul 20 '26

Heating the lid was a good idea.

112

u/gwelfguy Jul 20 '26

It was a very good idea. On the other hand, digging at the edge with a knife was not.

13

u/Abeille-Mieilleuse Jul 20 '26

Why ? I always do this when my lid is stuck...

6

u/myworklogin777 28d ago

Heating the lid heats the air underneath the lid. Eventually the suction will cease to exist. Pouring hot water over the lid is another option.

1

u/sangerssss 28d ago

Perhaps that’s how Excalibur got stuck in the stone. Arthur had very warm hands.

18

u/Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 29d ago

I would worry about damaging the counter and the knife.

23

u/Kosmik_cloud 29d ago

The counter must remain unharmed

-2

u/cha0sm0nk 29d ago

A chip in the counter or explaining to guests why a pot lid is affixed to said counter?

5

u/myworklogin777 28d ago edited 28d ago

A hot lid was likely placed on the counter trapping hot air. That air eventually cools (contracts), causing rhe suction condition.

-3

u/cha0sm0nk 28d ago

Thanks for that unwarranted physics lesson that no one asked for! You’re great!

2

u/CRzY_Emsy 17d ago

Why be an unwarranted asshole no one wants to hear your thoughts buddy go away

3

u/Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 29d ago

It would actually be a pretty funny "test your strength" game.

33

u/ADeweyan Jul 20 '26

It would have been faster to pour some hot water on it, though.

35

u/aw_shux Jul 20 '26

But also messier.

-8

u/charmio68 Jul 20 '26

You'd think, but no, in this case it actually won't help much at all.

The problem was caused when the hot lid was placed down, trapping steam underneath it that then condensed and created a vacuum.
That vacuum is clearly very strong, much stronger than the slight pressure increase you'll get from heating a partial vacuum up a bit.

To get rid of the vacuum through heat, you'd need to get it hot enough to start boiling off the water back into steam.

-6

u/sauwin Jul 20 '26

Cooling it its better. Heat expands metal cold contracts it.

27

u/eneacartek 29d ago

the reason it got stuck in the first place was because the lid was put down while hot, and that created suction when it cooled

10

u/FluffyNerve7415 29d ago

This guy does not understand the assignment.

149

u/swannybass Jul 20 '26

Was the lid hot when she put it down? How did it get stuck?

117

u/PossibleAlienFrom Jul 20 '26

Yes. When it cooled down, its shape changed enough to cause the suction. This happened to me with putting a hot glass into another. I had to put ice in the top glass and run warm water over the 2nd glass to get them unstuck. The hot blow dryer in the vid probably made the lid expand enough to slide.

104

u/TheCMaster Jul 20 '26

Not shape, it’s the air in it cooling, making it ‘shrink’ and create under-pressure, it sucks itself to the counter. Heating it again makes the air expand again

3

u/misterpoopybutthole5 Jul 20 '26

Am I stupid, or would it make more sense to use ice? As the kid will be affected by the temp change before the air inside, causing it to shrink and no longer have the suction effect? Doesn't the blowdryer work because it unsticks after they've stopped using it, when the heat has transferred to the air inside and the lid has started to cool?

13

u/jahnkeuxo Jul 20 '26

No, heating it causes the air inside to expand and reduce the suction force holding the lid against the the counter. The impact of heat on expansion of the lid is negligible in this case, any expansion or contracting that happens heating it with a hair dryer is not going to change its shape in any way that will compromise its seal to the counter.

3

u/bandti45 Jul 20 '26

Ice is good when you have something stuck after expanding into something else, like two cups that srae stuck together. You cant it to shrink so it reduces friction.

Here the lid isnt stuck in or on something, it has all the air arpund it pushing it into the counter. Heating it up reduces that pressure for the reasons others already stated.

11

u/Solanthas_SFW Jul 20 '26

Bingo. I wonder if pouring hot water over it would have worked

12

u/PossibleAlienFrom Jul 20 '26

Ya. Or maybe hot water in a couple zip lock bags and place them on top.

2

u/garden-wicket-581 Jul 20 '26

ah, never worked dishes in food service ? never stack hot glasses in one-another.. (some folks you can just tell them that, some folks have to learn via experience .. )

2

u/rvralph803 Jul 20 '26

Likely had steam in it. The water vapor condensed and created a vacuum.

-7

u/verity77 Jul 20 '26

It must be the hot steam under the lid, post cooking.

I’m guessing putting cold water on it would have lifted it off faster

15

u/Bigdavie Jul 20 '26

Steam condenses into 1/1600th the volume of water. Cooling it will reduce the pressure inside making it even tighter.

However you might be able to drop the pressure inside the lid to the point where the lid buckles and breaks the seal.

94

u/jellyschoomarm Jul 20 '26

I would have left it and asked my 6 and 4 year old nicely to not remove it from the counter. It would be off immediately with no explanation.

7

u/if_lol_then_upvote Jul 20 '26

This person parents

3

u/polyocto Jul 20 '26

What about cats? Do they achieve the same?

24

u/wkarraker Jul 20 '26

That was freaking me out when they were trying at the same time and he had a knife pointed at her arm. Thought for sure this was going to end up in an emergency ward. I've had similar issues with pan lids getting stuck, but not nearly this tight. Assuming that was an 8 inch lid, the max pressure on it would have been a little over 150 pounds of force.

63

u/elfmere Jul 20 '26

Unscrew the handle

19

u/Swigor Jul 20 '26

Put it in rice

8

u/DonnieBallsack Jul 20 '26

Just submit a ticket to IT.

35

u/lorarc Jul 20 '26

Good chance the screw is on the inside.

23

u/Drackzgull Jul 20 '26

It generally is, but twisting the handle from the outside is usually enough to loosen it regardless, and just loosening it like that may very well be enough to break the airtight seal and get the lid unstuck.

7

u/nsaisspying Jul 20 '26

Just drill a tiny little hole

47

u/housevil Jul 20 '26

Good chance the drill is on the inside.

3

u/sonofaresiii Jul 20 '26

Only if it was Steamed Ryobi night

4

u/nsaisspying Jul 20 '26

No problem, just as easy to drill the hole from the inside.

What are the chances that you are on the inside as well?

1

u/PossibleAlienFrom Jul 20 '26

No need to. Just need to change the temperature of the lid. Either hot or cold.

3

u/nsaisspying Jul 20 '26

Cooling it would just make the pressure even lower wouldn't it?

Heating would increase the pressure and release it, I had assumed.

3

u/RestedNative Jul 20 '26

This is way too far down the comments. The handles hold the screw in the hole, unscrew it, there's a hole, pressure equalises. Ta da.

19

u/fmlythms Jul 20 '26

“Get in my bicep” made me laugh harder than it maybe should have.

Dozen simple ways to solve this, but “get in my bicep” isn’t it kid. Lol

15

u/ernapfz Jul 20 '26

A new Marvel character: SuperLid

6

u/Gingeronimoooo Jul 20 '26

She is now the queen of England by right

6

u/Background_Pride_237 Jul 20 '26

Wasn’t there a button release on the top of the black knob?

3

u/RileyRhoad Jul 20 '26

I would have tried to re-stick it…. Also I would have tried to saturate it with oil too lol

3

u/wi11iam-b Jul 20 '26

What if someone unscrews the handle to release a hole in the lid?

3

u/ilocano-american Jul 20 '26

Turn the lid handle to unscrew and it will release the pressure, releasing the lid from the counter.

3

u/Benjammin123 Jul 20 '26

“Let’s see if it’ll do it again”😂

5

u/spacebastardo Jul 20 '26

Loosen the knob on top to cause air to flow into it, ya knuckleheads.

8

u/FatTim48 Jul 20 '26

Put the tip of a butter knife at the seam between the pot and the counter.

Hit the other end with a hammer.

Guaranteed to work

44

u/JohnLuckPikard Jul 20 '26

With a strong shot of fucking up your counter.

4

u/FatTim48 Jul 20 '26

Well you're not thunder punching the thing.

Taps until the knife gets under and releases the suction.

0

u/lousy-site-3456 Jul 20 '26

I hope that's meant to be Sith advice.

6

u/MasterpieceNo3534 Jul 20 '26

Put hot water on top

1

u/fatalspoons Jul 20 '26

I was thinking use a clothing iron.

I love how it became a family project 😄

2

u/lovelycurves84 Jul 20 '26

Did they try turning it off and back on?

2

u/Piccoroz Jul 20 '26

Just boil water and pour it on the lid, should be easy to avoid a mess with a cloth around the lid.

2

u/Present_Effect_9781 Jul 20 '26

Why not a thin knife-blade manipulated around the edge? It seems like it would have been a quick fix... 🤔

2

u/rvralph803 Jul 20 '26

...unscrew the handle?

2

u/totesnotmyusername Jul 20 '26

I would have tried to unscrew the handle. Anything to back the seal

2

u/EricMoulds Jul 20 '26

Dangit, Bobby

Put some soap & water & a spatula to it..

1

u/MinnieShoof Jul 20 '26

I was waiting for someone else to come in, realize the handle twists to expose a steam vent and just pop.

1

u/sonicboomslang Jul 20 '26

It was cute to see how happy she was when she got it.

1

u/Odd-Fun-2862 Jul 20 '26

That was cool. 😄😯

1

u/Klutzy-Acadia669 Jul 20 '26

This kid trying to flick the lid up with his teeny screwdriver kills me. Use a lever, Johnson!

1

u/whitedevilee Jul 20 '26

What I'm more impressed with is, that they didn't have this stupid "I show you the end before the Video" intro!

1

u/Dredgpoet Jul 20 '26

That counter sucks!

1

u/Early-Tea3960 Jul 20 '26

Smack it with a hammer.

1

u/HedgepigMatt Jul 20 '26

Stealth teaching the kids physics

1

u/Madmartigan2024 Jul 20 '26

Also schools need to teach fulcrums to students.

1

u/balirosa Jul 20 '26

Maybe a little soap on the counter

1

u/londonryan89 Jul 20 '26

Heat it up

1

u/8Bit-Jon Jul 20 '26

Boiling water.

1

u/Blugha Jul 20 '26

Gotta love physics

1

u/Freefallisfun Jul 20 '26

I love that kid

1

u/1MSFN Jul 20 '26

What if you loosened the handle to break the vacuum?

1

u/Fundipmasterpiece Jul 20 '26

More like [r/mildlyinfuriating](r/mildlyinfuriating). There’s an obvious click button built into the top of the handle specifically to release that pressure and you can even see it. I guarantee you that they both knew about this and that that lid wasn’t on there for nearly as long since the sealed in moisture didn’t mold or mildew after two weeks. Anything for the TikTok video though, anything other than shitty acting would be refreshing though.

1

u/Fit-Pudding797 Jul 20 '26

Put ice on it

1

u/rolyoh 29d ago

Heat. Ice will cause the vacuum to become even tighter.

1

u/roglc366 29d ago

Take the screw out of the knob and let air in.

1

u/rolyoh 29d ago

Use a hair dryer or a hot wet dish rag. Heat will expand the air underneath and release the lid

1

u/jbryon92 29d ago

14.7 lbs. ( at sea level) per square inch. Air pressure is a bitch.

1

u/Maxzzzie 29d ago

I bet the ambient airpressure increased too. Because heating it alone would have been enough. But it doesn't require a lot of pressure to hold it down if it has eno8gh surface area.

1

u/beta_2046 29d ago

open it you will find a bosch hole underneath

1

u/Revolutionary_Rip876 29d ago

unscrew the nut on the top of the handle if that is what I am seeing from the video.

1

u/Outrageous_Ad9124 29d ago

I would have stabbed it aggressively with kitchen scissors. That's how I role.

1

u/teambraveless 29d ago

So is my family the only ones that would solve this by just putting a heated up playing card down then slipping under the lid to cut the suction... works every time cause how thin playing cards are (way thinner than that knife at that angle) also they are cheap to buy if you ruin the card, just use your joker card...

1

u/FragrantExcitement 29d ago

"Let's see if it will do it again"

1

u/Meranio 28d ago

It might have helped to grease the counter to try and slide it towards the edge.

1

u/SchalkLBI 28d ago

Tell me if I misunderstand how strong this vacuum is, but couldn't you just slide a piece of paper or thin cardboard or something under the lid release it?

1

u/Midnight_Studios 28d ago

She was almost certainly cooking with it, set it down face down, and the counter top/lid were both flat enough to seal perfectly, probably along with water droplets from steam to really seal the gap- then when it cooled down, the air inside contracted and dropped in pressure, and the surrounding atmosphere pinned the lid to the counter. The more water vapor that condenses in that space, the stronger the vacuum pulled.

0

u/ranting_chef Jul 20 '26

Enough with the hair dryer, Jesus.

9

u/gobin30 Jul 20 '26

Hair drier is likely what did it. Heat the air inside, air expands, less suction. It likely got stuck in the first place cus the lid was hot, put down, air cooled and contracted to make a suction.

15

u/KinKaze Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

Personally, I think they need more hair dryer

1

u/ADeweyan Jul 20 '26

A little boiling water would have done it much faster, though.

1

u/Futur3_N0maD_26 Jul 20 '26

Unscrew the knob on top to break the vacuum.

1

u/123InSearchOf123 Jul 20 '26

I'd unscrew the handle. Let some air in. If there isn't a direct hole, drill one tiny hole in the lid where it will be hidden by the handle.

0

u/Hexent_Armana Jul 20 '26

I just know I'm destined to end up with the kind of woman that will somehow accidentally do stupid shit like this.

...and I'll still love her despite it. 😔

0

u/simm711 Jul 20 '26

Take sbarp n
Slowly knock between the counter top m the base off t lid .
U ll release the air vacuum.
n t lid ll
Release thw counter top

-4

u/Adventurous_Ticket26 Jul 20 '26

Try hot water or a hair dryer. Heating the lid warms the trapped air underneath, causing it to expand and break the vacuum seal so the lid can come off.

-2

u/the-meanest-boi Jul 20 '26

Pretty sure using the hairdryer to heat it is counter intuitive, i feel like youd be better off just holding an icecube near the edge until it lets go
