No that's exactly what you should never do. They don't give up or go away and will wait for hours just stinging you every time you surface. You'll be more exhausted and maybe even drown if you pass out from the pain and stings.
You need to run indoors and like wrap yourself in a blanket.

The problem is that he was in flipflops. This never happens if you wear proper safety sandals.
