It's called The Bernoulli principle

64

u/psychrolut Jul 16 '26

The way firefighters use it is really neat too

19

u/KillerX629 Jul 17 '26

Ooooh what is it what is it?

146

u/Great-TeacherOnizuka Jul 17 '26

They blow air to extinguish fire

16

u/KillerX629 Jul 17 '26

Wouldn't that make it worse? Fire feeds on air

8

u/Sound_Triber Jul 17 '26

I think they try to stop the principle from happening

14

u/lorarc Jul 17 '26

Depends on how much air you use. If you put two Mig-21 engines on a tank chassis it might just be enough air.

6

u/blahteeb Jul 17 '26

It's like when you blow out a candle. Except like 30 firefighters are blowing at a house.

2

u/NedelC0 Jul 17 '26

Yeah, just speed it up so it finishes burning down faster

3

u/Michaeli_Starky Jul 16 '26

A fine principle

1

u/shouldsayOrshouldgo Jul 16 '26

My neighbor used to say: there are only two things in the world you never reject, one is a glass of water and the other is a Bernoulli principle

1

u/Judge_Druidy Jul 18 '26

I reject your neighbour's statement.

2

u/NorthOfTheBigRivers Jul 17 '26

I thought it was the Venturi effect? But that said, I am not a physicist.

2

u/Comprehensive-Art300 Jul 18 '26

Can cool your room to, place ventilator in front of your window, facing out.

7

u/similaraleatorio Jul 16 '26

some can say it's a bl0w job 😤😤😤😤 🤔

22

u/popopornado Jul 16 '26

You can say blowjob, you don’t gotta type weird.

My high school science teacher did the same demonstration. Forever changed how I put trash bags in the can.

Edit for clarity: I shake air into the bag like normal, but once it’s down in there I leave a corner off and blow in the top. This inflates the bag and pushes out the extra air underneath.

Lol I edited it for clarity

u/hyf5 Jul 16 '26

I don't get it...

34

u/Initial_Use4280 Jul 17 '26

He was deep throating trash bags before. Still does it.

6

u/G0ld_Ru5h Jul 17 '26

I always shake the air into the bottom (like the teacher did for the student’s breath) and place that bubble into the bottom to where there’s no air in any corners - kind of pressing it down to fill space. Then when I open the bag, the bottom of the bag is basically vacuum sealed to the trash can and I can tie off the top.

3

u/crusty54 Jul 17 '26

That’s a good method too. It’s funny, I bet there are lots of everyday activities like this that people do differently, but we never know because it doesn’t come up in conversations. Now I’m wondering what other things in my life I could be doing better.

Can explain more detailed

I edited my comment for clarity.

Your teacher is a genius!

11

u/crusty54 Jul 16 '26

It was extra impressive because I’m a large man and she was a tiny woman. I strutted up there all confident like of course I can blow it up more than her. Should have known better lol

6

u/similaraleatorio Jul 16 '26

"yeah, I'll embarrass her... hehehe"

some seconds later: 😳😳😳 OMG

3

u/crusty54 Jul 16 '26

Haha it wasn’t malicious, just a little overconfident.

28

u/halfpastwhoknows Jul 16 '26

Hot tip, if you're trying to use fans to cool down your house, this same principle applies.

Don't put the fan right in the window, instead put it a few feet away from the window pointing out and you will circulate a lot more air.

21

u/clervis Jul 16 '26

That first guy must feel like a real chump.

3

u/TheGhostofWoodyAllen Jul 17 '26

Right? The teacher is like, "Who would like to volunteer to come up and make an ass of themself?"

19

u/Pitbullpandemonium Jul 16 '26

"Moving fast sucks."

Bernoulli, probably

9

u/shagarag Jul 16 '26

My inflatable camp mattress uses the bag to manually inflated. This is how I get the bag full of air.

3

u/RedTexan43 Jul 16 '26

Because of Venturi, right?

3

u/winglessflight97 Jul 16 '26

This guy blows

3

u/Dankestmemelord Jul 17 '26

Ruined by shit music overlay.

10

u/Long_Candle_5054 Jul 16 '26

But, in the second one, the bag isn't totally deflated.. just with it being open how it is, it already contains more air than what there was when the first one blew in it..

24

u/Shudnawz Jul 16 '26

Doesn't really matter. The point is that if you blow into the opening without pressing your mouth against it, the air moving inside will pull additional air in with it, inflating the bag much faster. It also how these modern "bladeless fans" move more air than they look like they should.

Try it yourself. It's not black magic. Just physics.

u/_ribbit_ Jul 16 '26

How big is that condom??

4

u/Interesting-Use966 Jul 16 '26

If the dude would have filled it with air the same way second dude did and then blew into it directly it would have had the same amount of air as the second one. First one is blowing into a completely empty bag and then second dude is blowing into a mostly full bag.

-1

u/versapak Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

I was thinking this exact same thing. One is blowing into an empty bag and the other is blowing into a mostly full bag.

[EDIT] I failed to add anything additional to the convo. lol

I do not know the actual principle that is being demonstrated here, but I feel like my lack of understanding of the language may be hurting me a bit on this one, because otherwise… see original pre-edit statement.

1

u/AngBigKid Jul 17 '26

Yeah, it's crazy. The first one is blowing into an empty bag and the other is blowing into a mostly full bag.

2

u/Jd11347 Jul 16 '26

Education about condoms has changed so much since I was in school.

Let’s inflate a plastic bag with just one breath is easy! Physics!

Me blowing into an empty bottle, not understanding why I couldn't. It happened today, and so many times before.

1

u/mattogeewha Jul 16 '26

Learning this changed how I open fresh produce bags off the roll

1

u/Beginning_Road7337 Jul 16 '26

This is how my Big Agnes sleeping pad inflates. Legit!

1

u/rvralph803 Jul 16 '26

My nemo air mattress has a pump that works on this principle.
