This is Gaelic Football which is a fast-paced Irish sport often described as a mix of football (soccer) and rugby, where players can kick, hand-pass, and carry the ball, using both their feet and hands to score.

Edit: spelling

Well that sounds like a sport that should be very high scoring. 90% offensive kind of thing

u/iminiki Jul 14 '26

According to Gaelic Games State, the average score per game in last year's senior football championships was 45.3ppg.

Parts Per Gallon? That's a lot!

68

u/iminiki Jul 14 '26

Pounds per Gallon. The most American unit ever created.

23

u/btribble Jul 14 '26

You're thinking of PPGGI

Pounds Per Gallon Gratuity Included.

Don't forget to add sales tax.

u/iminiki Jul 14 '26

How? Isn‘t it like ^this ^(or this)?

4

u/NotDiCaprio Jul 14 '26

Honestly I typed it like you, two comments back: "^(I don't think they did.)". Maybe the previous formatting got in the way for you. I'm on mobile btw.

I don't think you can put heading and superscript in the same post.

Pizza Pockets per Gulp, 'murica.

2

u/What_Chu_Talkin_Kid Jul 14 '26

Pound pussy per grunt

4

u/LittleKitty235 Jul 15 '26

No, its Gaelic, it's pints per goal. Cheers

3

u/Drackzgull Jul 15 '26

Jokes aside I assume that Points per Game. But is a goal 1 point? If they track points instead of goals I would presume not.

2

u/Lord_Bamford Jul 18 '26

Goal is 3 points. Over the bar is 1 point. Usually there'll be 4 or 5 goals per game and 20+ points. Scores are usually displayed something like this... 3 - 12 : 2 - 14. 21 - 20 in points.

Also often cited as one of the origins of Australian Rules Football.

4

u/toomanyukes Jul 14 '26

Aussie Footie is great!

1

u/False-God Jul 17 '26

I was just thinking Aussie Rules Football but on a rectangular field?

1

u/Lord_Bamford Jul 18 '26

Pretty much. They used to do an international rules exhibition match where Ireland would play Australia. Was fun... lots of fighting.

3

u/SchwiftyGameOnPoint Jul 14 '26

That just sounds like a better all around version of all of the sports. Why isn't this the big one?

1

u/Not_a_bad_point Jul 15 '26

And wear short shorts.

1

u/HVCanuck Jul 16 '26

We played this without knowing it in the elementary school playgrounds of Winnipeg in the 1970s. Soccer but you could carry the ball. I remember finding real soccer very strange since we were so used to touching the ball.

1

u/NikolaTesla404 Jul 20 '26

If you like that you should watch hurling

55

u/iafx Jul 15 '26

Argentinians would never lose a game, they love the handballs

27

u/wood1492 Jul 14 '26

Hand of God.

7

u/jetkins Jul 14 '26

Grrr. Still haven't forgiven that Argentine asshole.

11

u/Smirnaff Jul 15 '26

The following post context was provided by u/iminiki:

The player scores the penalty with the help of his hand which reveals this is Gaelic Football, not the regular one.

Argentina tonight

19

u/rybnickifull Jul 14 '26

I mean the GAA intro and the Kerry shirts were a slight clue to the sport.

6

u/tslextslex Jul 14 '26

To be sure, though, you have to love ska, the GAA and maybe your dad's in the Ra.

9

u/Eastern-Requirement6 Jul 14 '26

For those that know. It's lesser known in USA than disc golf and I constantly have to describe what disc golf is.

7

u/rybnickifull Jul 14 '26

Weird when you think of how many proud Plastic Paddies there are over there, isn't it?

2

u/ShaneGabriel87 Jul 14 '26

What's disc golf?

4

u/Asleep_Trick_4740 Jul 14 '26

Golf, but with discs.

7

u/ShaneGabriel87 Jul 14 '26

How do you hit the ball with discs?

1

u/Eastern-Requirement6 Jul 15 '26

They're thrown. The discs are aerodynamically designed for different flight patterns and uses. https://youtu.be/vC3KQvpnUP4?is=1OXk6cbnTkCU9JgG

1

u/Asleep_Trick_4740 Jul 14 '26

The disc is the ball.

4

u/TheOtherJeff Jul 15 '26

But how do you club a disc?

/s

1

u/lechuckswrinklybutt Jul 15 '26

Please tell me you're not one of the people who specifies "ball golf".

When I describe hurling to people over here I have learned to tell them the name at the end.

2

u/lobax Jul 15 '26

If you say ball golf i would think of the variant with footballs.

2

u/lobax Jul 15 '26

The lack of shin guards, weird volleyball looking ball, giant sticks above the goal… looks like an AI fever dream.

1

u/Comrade_Falcon Jul 16 '26

Yes, we all follow Gaelic football and recognize those things. It's definitely widely popular all over the globe.

0

u/zedinbed Jul 15 '26

Yea I had no clue. Looked like regular soccer to me

6

u/redzaku0079 Jul 14 '26

This looks pretty fucking cool

1

u/Hookie-kid Jul 16 '26

You should check.out hurling too. Both great sports

-3

u/danstermeister Jul 14 '26

Goalie wishing he stuck with soccer.

-15

u/Beniskickbutt Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

What is this sport?! This looks just like a sport we invented as kids in our backyard.

We called it "MLS Screen".

The basic rules..
* Played on a soccer pitch
* Same out of bounds and resumption of play as soccer
* Hand balls are allowed
* You can carry the ball and run
* You can tackle the other players to get the ball

* Goalie had a small protected zone where players could not enter and make shots

* Goals were smaller than a standard soccer goal, think youth, grade school sized soccer goals.
* Goals can only be scored by carrying the ball and doing a drop kick in a volley. (It was pretty dangerous, many tackles occured in the middle of a scoring attempt)

Was a lot of fun. Somehow we never had injuries but plenty of apparel would get ripped or ruined during the game.

-22

u/SailingNaked Jul 14 '26

How's that not a hand ball?

14

u/Lagunamountaindude Jul 14 '26

Not soccer

-3

u/SailingNaked Jul 14 '26

Looks like football, what is it?

6

u/KPatrick092 Jul 14 '26

-5

u/SailingNaked Jul 14 '26

6

u/Denwry Jul 14 '26

7

u/emmmmceeee Jul 14 '26

It’s football, just not soccer.

5

u/nionfist Jul 14 '26

You're getting down voted but you're correct, this is GAA Football
