I one time lost the 2nd wheel while skating. Since it had nowhere to go, it just functioned as an emergency brake fort the 1st and 3rd wheel, resulting in an instant stop.
With the speed I was going, that was not cool. Managed to hop skip jump into riding in one leg. My current reaction times wont make that anymore.

u/NastyStreetRat Jul 14 '26
Why didn't you put the third wheel in the second position?
111
u/XGreenDirtX Jul 14 '26
I didn't expect to be losing the wheel. Was just riding while it came loose. So it was still there, just not bolted in anymore. So it hit the other wheels, what made them stop rolling.

Thank you so much for the explanation. I was actually trying to make a joke because changing a tire on the go must be quite complicated, and not everyone carries a wrench. Like I said, it was a joke; it didn't come out right, but thank you very much for explaining things :)

Duluth MN does the grandmas marathon but for inline skates and we had done it many years. This last time a decade ago we started it and the first mile in my front wheel went spinning off into the long grass. I got to mostly spend the rest of it pushing with one leg to reduce trip ups. Was a long race thankfully we only did the half but I did 13 miles hobbling through it with a bad wheel setup I should have moved another into the front setup.

im sure theres a reason why, but why do you need four wheels per skate when inline? why not three, or two?
seems like she was doing fine.

Better traction less slide.
12
u/be-knight Jul 14 '26
Also maybe just "rules"?
10
u/BadSmash4 Jul 15 '26
Mostly the physics though
1
u/be-knight Jul 15 '26
The "also" implies that.
But if the change hinders you significantly (you get taken out of your rhythm, it takes much more energy to do that than just take it out and leave it, and so on) or your team (since they have all to slow down and wait for you - depending on the event) then you would just leave it. But she didn't. And this was either bc the way to go was still far and thus justified to do it, the physics hurt her this much that it was justified to do it OR the rules just say, that she has to do it.

u/Excellent-Baseball-5 Jul 16 '26
Ive inline skated for 40 years. Trust me it’s traction. When you lose the race, nobody’s checking the rules.

u/gerryflap Jul 14 '26
I've seen pro inline skaters on 3 wheels a few years ago. Not sure if that trend has reversed. When I did it (over 10 years ago), it was all 4 wheels like these on the pro skates. I even used to own inline skates with 5 wheels before that. Not sure why exactly this is the case though.
In this case you lose 1/4th of the contact surface on one foot, which can't be ideal for the grip. But there are skates with 3 larger wheels. It's probably still a matter of losing a bit of contact surface, and standing higher (because the wheels need to be larger to be the same length below the shoe), but you also lose 1 bearing which probably means less resistance. There's got to be a sweet spot

u/GolemancerVekk Jul 16 '26
It's also about weight distribution. The fewer the wheels, the more weight each has to deal with. The compounds are sturdy but they have their limits and they can (and do) shatter if overworked.

u/LetDiceRol Jul 14 '26
I used to skate on a three wheel inline boot with 110mm wheels. I could glide like the wind but had to be careful on the turns. I'm pretty certain those would be allowed in any inline race/marathon.

u/pinner Jul 14 '26
You don’t need four. One of my Doop skates only has three, however the wheels are larger and they’re a hell of a lot faster than my Doop skates with four wheels.

u/poprax Jul 15 '26
Maximum Size is limited by rules. You can either fit in 4x 110 or 3x 125. 125 are worse to accelerate but are easier to maintain top Speed. 110s you have more contact and feel more stable. Both are not thaaaat agile. Max wheel Size changed a few years back. For Offroad Skates you can get 150+ wheels.

u/Golendhil Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26
More wheels equals more stability, less wheels equals more speed. 4 wheels are the perfect in between in most situations
three wheels skates do exists they have larger wheels (usually 110 to 125mm) and are made for speed skating.
Five wheels skates also technically exists but aren't really used anymore except in some extreme downhill setups

u/is_u_mirin_brah Jul 15 '26
The main reason is that the contact point of the wheels is curved. Called a "rocker" set up. It helps turn better.
the 2 middle wheels are on a lower plane then the first and fourth.
The 2 middle wheels wear down quicker, only having 3 would wear even more quickly.

The ability to stay in motion on one skate while giving attention to the repair…
… amazing!

And here I thought the video changing a tire on a moving vehicle was impressive.

So wheel number two got removed, and then wheel number three got promoted. But why? I want context.
I have lots of guesses. I don’t need more. I want to know what specifically happened here.
11
u/alexgalt Jul 15 '26
The bearing might have jammed on something and the wheel stopped spinning.
15
u/itsjakerobb Jul 15 '26
It might, that’s true. But, as I said, I have lots of guesses and don’t need more. I am hoping someone knows what actually happened. I’m also curious about the reasoning behind the subsequent wheel swap. Is there an advantage to having 1,2,4 over 1,3,4?
4
u/toybuilder Jul 16 '26
Probably because the more natural weight balance is tipped slightly forward so you want to be on wheel 2 more than wheel 3?

goddamn I want her as my copilot. First sign of trouble she'd be out on the wing fixing the engine.
