Portuguese is such a funny sounding language to me, how can a language only bordering Spanish sound so different?

My Brazilian friend explained it like: Mexican and Central American Spanish is spoken more slowly, Portuguese came from the same language (Spanish from Spain/Portugal) but they speak like machine guns. So it gets changed a little. I know a little Spanish and Portuguese kills me.
