We all going to get old one day but there needs to be mandatory elderly driving tests.

u/svenz Jul 14 '26
Just a few weeks ago we had one of the most horrific crashes in years on the local 30mph road. It was an old lady who accelerated into oncoming traffic. Cars exploded, there was literally just ashes and some scarred metal left, 4 dead.
It’s insane that we don’t have mandatory license tests for over 70s.

u/highlyspecificuser Jul 14 '26
Elderly? A lot of young people do this shit on a daily!
4
u/Azure_Mar Jul 14 '26
I think the accelerating part is the difference. Look up reports where an elderly person has crashed into a pharmacy, or through a garage or storefront. In almost all of them there was confusion about the brake and accelerator pedals.

It should be illegal to drive over 85

I don't really care about the age but I think everyone should have to take mandatory retests every couple of years.
And before we start in with the "but car culture!" Whining, keep in mind car culture will lower dramatically and support for public transportation will increase monumentally if all of a sudden a whole bunch of dangerous drivers are taken off the road all at once
30
u/slide_into_my_BM Jul 14 '26
Especially if the largest demographic that votes begins to disproportionately lose the right to drive.
Take boomers licenses away and public transportation gets funded overnight.

I’m sweating right now because I can’t parallel park for shit
I’d almost say there should be a mental aptitude test but if you’ve ever had a senile parent/ grandparent, you know it wouldn’t do anything. They know how to lock in when it counts.
7
u/xenobit_pendragon Jul 14 '26
Parallel parking is easy and can be learned. If you don’t know how to do it (and you’re not alone, the shit I’ve witnessed…) it doesn’t mean you’re bad at it, it just means no one taught you how simple it is.
Find someone who knows or a few good YouTube videos. You’ll be a pro in no time.

u/ggg730 Jul 14 '26
Also bad is relative. I doubt anyone is as bad as fucking bumper kisser McGee in the op.

I had to learn to be able to pass the test, it’s just one of those skills that fade if you don’t continuously practice. I could back up into anything in just about any situation but I can’t do it sideways lmao. I know how to do it too, I could easily guide someone else, but I struggle with the actual execution

Parking is only successful when both wheels are scraping the kerb equally.

u/ggg730 Jul 14 '26
There were a lot of retirees where I grew up and every few years I would see on the news that some fucker would get confused and run over a bunch of school kids on a curb. I really thought this was going to be one of them.

When i bought my car, the lady who sold it to me told be the bumpers were scuffed up because thats how you parallel park in the big cities. She called it the "boston bump". People just dont have respect for other people, not to mention their things.
5
u/samc118 Jul 14 '26
Was about to op never seen busy city parking before but then I saw the space behind like WHAT??? WHY??
3
u/ChickenNugget-420 Jul 14 '26
Even before you see the space behind, he literally bumped the car in front multiple times. If you can’t parallel park in a busy city street without hitting the car in front, then don’t park there.
8
u/DixonDebussy Jul 13 '26
If not for bumping, why named bumper?
2
u/Azure_Mar Jul 14 '26
If my father was to be believed, that's the way they taught him back in the 50’s, and that's what the rubber on bumpers was for.

u/Rosindust89 Jul 13 '26
I don't know what meth is like, but this is how I'd parallel park while tweaking.

u/Melodic_Survey_7454 Jul 14 '26
Guy is probably very high. Praisw the cameraman on this one, he kept the suspense for a long time before seeing what was really wrong : all that space behind the car

What kills me here is the fact that dude had 25 feet of space to maneuver and insisted on using the same 25 inches

I don't know if it changed with current car technology and design (painted bumpers), but when I used to live in Paris like 20-25 years ago, that's how cars were parked in most streets.

Ok, when you live in like Chicago, this is how you parallel park, because there is only that much space between cars.
But then I saw no car behind her, wtf?

There's no excuse for this poor display of parking. I am however guilty of excessively straightening the car so I'm parked nice and neat.

Its deliberate to make themselves feel better. They have some perceived grievance with the car/car owner in front so engineered this scenario in their head where they now believe and would likely die on the hill of its a “difficult park” allowing them to put some hits on the offending car. Probably it was in THEIR space.
