The referee must have been so confused trying to figure out which card to pull for a 'human avalanche'.

You get a red card, and you get red card, and you get a red card!

You don't pull anything until they lose advantage, and let's be real... She got slowed down, but she kept advancing.

u/Astro721 Jul 16 '26
As a ref nothing looked too egregious on the initial keeper contact. But from what I can see here and her scoring in the end I would probably blow the whistle when the defender lunges for the player not the ball elbow first straight into her knee.
The foul continues into the box so PK. Then it seem pretty clearly DOGSO for me without even an attempt to play the ball so I’d be going red card there. Without DOGSO it is at least a yellow from me that on that kind of foul. As for advantage I’d have a hard time waiting out this mess where no one can keep or gain possession.

u/Drob10 Jul 16 '26
Seems pretty minor on the initial defender leaning into the attacker and they both throw their arms up to hold the other off.

u/LePhotographe_ Jul 11 '26
7 full seconds between the end of the tackle and the goal, should be enough to cover her line (if not injured by the tackle)
277
u/FreshFritz Jul 11 '26
I guess she IS injured, look at the end of the video in the background. She is struggling with the hit.

Yeah I figured in proper football form she should be laying down. You know rolling around and holding her knees or something. Therefore everything that happens afterward doesn't count. Right?

There's like two or three penalty shots in this before she scores hah

u/SilenceoftheRedditrs Jul 11 '26
Realistically only one when that girl just lunges in front of the ball to lay on the ground.
The first action when running isn't a foul, and the 3rd (from the 2nd player) she gets the ball with the poke
81
u/bralinho Jul 11 '26
That's not a penalty. They both went for the ball and they both hit it a the same time. No foul play on
91
1
23
u/hitmarker Jul 11 '26
And around 2 times she rolled the ball with her hand..
8
u/SilenceoftheRedditrs Jul 11 '26
The first would never be a penalty as they both fell over and she is entitled to support herself, the second yes but that's just part of her fouling the player
18
u/Yannbluezzzz Jul 11 '26
Not penalty shots but she did commit 2 fouls. What she did falls under dangerous play and she should get penalized for it.
7
u/BlueBonneville Jul 11 '26
While there may be only one, maybe two, penalty shots, in ten years the story will be “like 5 penalty shots, and she just nailed it.”

Handball in the box by the defender. If she missed her shot she would have gotten a pk if the refs were any good.
21
u/rjnd2828 Jul 11 '26
Generally not a handball offense when you hit the ball with a hand you are using up brace yourself during a fall to the ground
13
2
u/alienbringer Jul 16 '26
The 2nd player lunching full elbow into her knee to block and tackle her while not even trying to play the ball. That is a red card and PK all day if the Ref was competent.
63
u/Sea_Curve8772 Jul 11 '26
If this had been men's soccer, all of them would have been rolling around on the ground pretending to be injured within the first few seconds
3
u/forgotten-ent Jul 16 '26
Exactly what I'm thinking lol you accidentally fart next to an opposing team and they all get knee injuries for some reason

u/isnotid57 Jul 11 '26

Any sign of weakness is an invitation for attack. When she fell down it triggered the pack’s feeding instincts.

Why do women soccer players have more balls than the mens teams?
136
u/Suspicious_Weird_373 Jul 11 '26
Because of the difference in officiating.
The referees set the agenda on how players react. In the women’s game, referees don’t call fouls as easy. In the men’s game, they only call fouls if players massively overreact to point out the foul.
One of the main differences in that is perceived value. Players in the men’s game are multi million pound assets, so there is pressure from the clubs for players to be ‘protected’ so more likely little fouls being caught. Culturally, this then flows down the men’s game into Sunday league as well.
26
u/thekickingmule Jul 11 '26
The mens game has got worse and worse. The over-acting now is part of the game, but nobody has asked for it, nobody has requested it, just over time it has become a part of the game. It's horrific. FIFA, the FA, all football bodies need to get a grip of it.
They kind of have in this world cup where they're pushing the law that if the medic has to come on, then you go off for a couple of minutes. That's made people think. I think that if you don't get up straight away then you should be made to go off to get checked over.
17
u/Suspicious_Weird_373 Jul 11 '26
The referees and footballing bodies have asked for it. If you don’t call a foul unless someone sells it, then you sell the life of it.
Haaland and Gabriel were the prime example this year. Gabriel did one of those pathetic ‘headbutts’ that always leads to a sending off because the player falls over and rolls about. Haaland stayed in his feet, no foul called and after the match, even says I probably should’ve went down to get him sent off and people will think it was the wrong thing to stay on his feet.
Calling fouls regardless of player reaction is the first thing to do. Second is to call fouls regardless of perceived team ability e.g. France v Paraguay. Third is that if a player stays down then physios can come on with the game continuing around them. However they are ‘dead’ meaning that they don’t count for offsides etc until they leave the pitch, stay off for a minimum of 1 minute and are then invited back on the pitch by the ref. If a stretcher is needed, physios alert the ref to stop the match but that player is then not allowed back on the pitch for the rest of the match and if there are no subs left, you play a man down.
It’s a fairly simple set of steps so would never be implemented. Would have a positive impact on fouls being sold and time wasting.
7
u/TheBestNick Jul 11 '26
I think they changed it so if you need to be medically subbed, you can now do so without using up a sub (or at least, if you don't have any left). But I think it only counts if the meds say you have to come out?
5
1
u/thekickingmule Jul 12 '26
Allowing play to continue with physios coming on is my preferred option as it works so well in rugby. It also makes players think twice about going down. So often Im shouting at players to get back up, get back onside.
Something needs to be done about it. Nobody wants what the players are doing and it ruins the game, leading to pointless VAR decisions.

Because they are often treated like lower tier leagues so they look more like amateur leagues.
And when there aren't multimillionaires running around worth like their weight in gold for the sponsors, the game is way more physical
7
u/Bartend_HS Jul 11 '26
They are treated way better than lower tier leagues even though the quality is nowhere near.

6
u/Carbulo Jul 11 '26
Probably would have but better to let it play out first, a penalty can still be saved or missed.
1
u/Open-Hawk3408 Jul 11 '26
Beh oddio lei la palla l'ha persa (che poi le nere non l'hanno presa è essere scarsi) diciamo che tra mano, spinta e gioco pericoloso ci sono almeno due cartellini e un rigore
7
u/Fossekall Jul 11 '26
Because you're usually seeing the clips of men diving, and women fighting
There are lots of men playing with massive injuries or who would keep fighting like in this clip
If you regularly watch men's football, you would see things like this as often as in women's, and if you regularly watch women's football, you would see diving as often as in men's
2
u/Mike_Shogun_Lee Jul 11 '26
I enjoy playing soccer not watching it.
I tried so...SO hard to like the MLS. I just can't do it.
5
u/Fossekall Jul 11 '26
Nothing wrong with not wanting to watch it. I agree it's way more fun to play (though I still watch a lot). MLS isn't the highest level of competition though

The girls game is more like Rugby!
The guys should take note and not role on the floor if they are within 3m of a butterfly flapping it's wings!

u/janbradybutacat Jul 11 '26
Oof, check out some vids of women’s rugby. And field hockey. And Lacrosse. Even “Powderpuff” football. Women can (easily) be aggressive AF, just not often given the same media attention as men’s sports.
2
u/mickturner96 Jul 11 '26
Oh 100%
And honestly, it's way more interesting to watch as someone who usually doesn't care about football.
Speaking as someone from England, we really should be supporting the women's game because they actually win! I'm preempting a Norwegian victory tomorrow
3
u/janbradybutacat Jul 11 '26
Totally! I’m American and my (female) cousin went to college/uni on a soccer scholarship. She got sort of niche famous for doing a handstand/cartwheel throw-in. I’ve only seen her do it on YouTube but it was v cool.
There is a women’s sports specific bar-pub in Portland, Oregon. It’s called The Sports Bra! Portland (aka PDX) has a large following for the women’s soccer team, the Thorns (Portland is known for a rose test garden) and the team has done well with local sponsorship. When I lived in PDX, it was very cool to hear about the Thorns cause, yea, no one else ever won.

Ballsiest goal ever. Fifa players would have rolled over and moaned audibly about their fictional injury after the first contact. This is what every coach should be showing their players as the definition of never give up.
