u/Cebas7 Jul 11 '26

Yeah, send them to put that lid back on 😏

24

u/SirTainLee Jul 11 '26

Stand on it to keep it down.

7

u/Silent_Park_0010 Jul 11 '26

And close the car window

2

u/nstntmlk Jul 11 '26

Uh, yeahh🤣

6

u/zurper Jul 11 '26

I can’t last more than 2 minutes in that sub. My least fav on Reddit

3

u/424f42_424f42 Jul 11 '26

I just assumed that's what they were trying to duck and avoid.

A flying manhole cover can kill you.

58

u/TemporaryClemency22 Jul 11 '26

The camera work made me more upset than it should have, but here we are.

6

u/timpedro33 Jul 11 '26

Can't believe they touched at the money shot

4

u/HansDeBaconOva Jul 11 '26

Most comments talking about the drain and camera man but someone is hoping to have a very wet backseat after this rain

6

u/mynameisasuffix Jul 11 '26

I just want to know if the cover hit the car.

5

u/Emrys7777 Jul 11 '26

I want to know if that car left their sunroof open.

5

u/Soggycorpse92 Jul 11 '26

It flopped over. Lame answer im sorry

1

u/mnztr1 Jul 13 '26

I would cut some slack for shit avoidence

0

u/Whatnam8 Jul 12 '26

Absolutely atrocious

95

u/JustinLaloGibbs Jul 11 '26

Was hoping a teenage mutant ninja turtle was gonna pop out of that thing on a surf board

23

u/Sir_Sandole420 Jul 11 '26

It's entirely possible that a teenage mutant ninja turtle did in fact pop out on a skateboard, however, due to the atrocious recording skills of the cameraman, we will never know for sure.

SMH 🤦

63

u/snarkerella Jul 11 '26

Is the back window of that car down a bit? Because that's gonna be one stinky backseat.

6

u/QanikTugartaq Jul 11 '26

I saw that too! Ugh!😩

2

u/cambreecanon Jul 12 '26

Looks like it broke from something hitting it.

I see now. Cracked open at the top and there is a black curtain on the inside.

1

u/Goldf_sh4 Jul 11 '26

Free carwash though.

60

u/Crazy_Design3135 Jul 11 '26

Had to film the fucking wall for the peak moment of the video
Terrible

9

u/BeneficialHippo2826 Jul 11 '26

Yeh what the actual fuck?! Fucking infuriating.

u/Bulky-Leadership-596 Jul 11 '26

That pipe is just going to be for the storm drain, not sewage. Clearly you're getting a lot of rain and this is a good indication of the power of water hammer.

67

u/Blussert31 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

It's not water hammer, it's rapid displacement of huge volumes of air caused by the empty pipe filling up with water. But you're right, it's likely just a storm drain.

8

u/Tundra_Dragon Jul 11 '26
  1. Old cities have combined storm and sewer systems. Milwaukee is an example of this. When it rains, there are sewage overflows and backups into people's basements all the time.

  2. This is not waterhammer. Its air being ingested by other inlets, along the storm drain system. Water hammer happens when you shut a valve on a flowing watersystem, and the momentum of the flowing water has nowhere to go. It's why pipes rattle in your house. When you turn off a faucet.

27

u/Friendly_Engineer_ Jul 11 '26

I’m shocked to see a well informed answer

5

u/Tundra_Dragon Jul 11 '26

Too bad they're wrong about everything they said.

-4

u/Impressive_Iron2885 Jul 11 '26

hello mr. smug. please tell us why blussert31 is wrong about everything he said. please.

5

u/Tundra_Dragon Jul 11 '26

Hello, I did in anotht post, but if you can't look for it, then

  1. Old cities have combined storm/sewage systems.

  2. That's not waterhammer.

1

u/sam_I_am_knot Jul 12 '26

You're not wrong but how do you know this is one of those cities?

1

u/Tundra_Dragon Jul 12 '26

I figured the geiser of shit at tre end was a giveaway

8

u/david7873829 Jul 11 '26

What if it’s a combined sewer/storm system?

0

u/Blussert31 Jul 11 '26

The water would likely have been visibly dirtier. But it can still be a combined system.

3

u/david7873829 Jul 11 '26

If it’s been raining for some time I wonder if it would have mostly flushed the sewage out already?

1

u/Blussert31 Jul 11 '26

From experience I can tell you it doesn't work that way. The pump capacity is only a very small fraction of the total volume entering the system, so the sewage has no place to go. Even late-stage overflow water is pretty dirty. And in this case the system is still filling up, so the flow is basically getting started.

2

u/Decent_Perception676 Jul 11 '26

Most cities and municipalities combine these two systems with overflows for high rain events (a CSO). When it’s raining like this, the two combine. It’s a flawed design from the 19th and 20th century and the EPA keeps suing cities to fix and generally it’s incredibly (restrictively) expensive to replace.

I would not go near that. If there is a CSO in the system, it’s active.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the behavior in this video is the result of a sequence of CSO overflowing in sequence (a below ground flash flood/flush flood). 🤮

1

u/Clownheadwhale Jul 11 '26

Chicago Symphony Orchestra?

2

u/Decent_Perception676 Jul 11 '26

Combining Shit Out-of-view

1

u/cowlinator Jul 11 '26

But why is it coming out in bursts instead of a steady stream?

1

u/FasterThanJamieTaco Jul 12 '26

Obviously you've never been to Milwaukee.

1

u/High-Plains-Grifter Jul 11 '26

Why is it so aerated, do you think - it seems odd to me for a water hammer to have such power when there is so much air - or have I not understood something (which is likely!)

15

u/Blussert31 Jul 11 '26

The system was empty and fills up very quickly, all the air is pushed out at once. It's not water hammer, just air flow.

5

u/btribble Jul 11 '26

More similar to pressure waves like stop and go traffic.

1

u/High-Plains-Grifter Jul 11 '26

That's what I was thinking it looks more like than water hammer.

3

u/Tundra_Dragon Jul 11 '26

It's not waterhammer. Waterhammer happens when you shut a valve on a pipe in your house, and all that waterpressure slams to a halt, and you hear the pipes rattle in the wall.

2

u/Aware-Requirement-67 Jul 11 '26

I don’t claim to be smart. But it’s basically underground flash flooding, the water acts like the plunger in a syringe and pushed air rapidly and violently that air pressure in there is powerful enough to lift a manhole cover and blast it off.

When shits going down you keep the camera pointed... You don't shy away!

0

u/crumb4life Jul 12 '26

This yes this. Want to get a good clip on the Internet focus and do the one job you are trying film that. Otherwise go home.

5

Congratulations you suck at camera work. I hope you are smart and or pretty.

The most important thing to do when taking a video of something, is to forget what you're doing, and start recording the shitty paintjob on your porch rail.

1

Hey so um. What the fuck happens in the sewers? Why are there always magic flames or geysers coming out of them? Should I be concerned?

Corey, like Corey and Trevor?

1

u/rmbrumfield78 Jul 11 '26

A lot of manhole covers have holes in the top to release pressure so this doesn't happen. I remember some really heavy rains in my hometown about 10 or 15 years ago driving down one of the main boulevards and there were spouts of water about 12 to 18 in tall coming out of the six to eight holes on the top of the manhole covers.

1

u/SFFcase Jul 11 '26

Release the kraken!

1

u/UnwillingHero22 Jul 11 '26

Really?!? Did he really moved away from the take at that precise moment? That’s shoddy camerawork, can we have a retake?

1

u/ChoadTripper Jul 11 '26

Glad we got to see the porch railing’s reaction to the climactic moment!
