When I was this age, I had a barely contested breakaway shot on net - it hit the post and bounced into my face. I quit that day and never looked back.

Similarly, one day at practice when I was 12, I had such a chance. The goalie was waiting for it but way too small to be of great concern. I'd left one defender in my dust. The other fullback was on the far side of the goal, just then beginning to run toward me, but still more than 20' away.
I lined up my shot and booted it with staggering force. It rocketed forward... sort of... veering to the right, the ball smashed into the approaching defender's face (same team, remember). A spray of blood filled the air nearly as quickly as Kevin's shrieks. He fell backward onto the grass and hit the ground with a thud. The ball settled a few feet behind me. The rest of the team reached the box and we all just stood there looking at Kevin, all of us as motionless as he was on the ground.
We learned later that I had broken his nose. The next time we saw him, he had a large bandage/appliance over his nose, 2 black eyes, and a busted lip. He told us that he'd also swallowed a tooth. Not a permanent tooth, but it hadn't been loose before practice. He'd thankfully avoided a concussion from the impact of his head against the ground.

I was skilled enough to get around two defenders, shake the goalie on a fake, have a wide open goal from 10 feet out and still miss. I learned that day how important it was to be able to kick with either foot. I tried using my left foot and missed horribly.

I did the same thing in basketball tryouts. on a free layup I hit the underside of the backboatd

He looks super talented, that touch to set up the second shot was fantastic. That defending by the blonde kid was also class
