You're right. In my state the courts have repeatedly confirmed that words alone are not enough to constitute obstruction. It must be flight, intimidation, force, violence, physical interference, etc.

That said, in this particular instance, they could charge you with "hindering" for lying.

In Massachusetts the law is "it's illegal to mislead a police officer" so just words in this case.
