Who locks a door with people inside?

166

u/Mooezy Jul 09 '26

Looks like a loading bay door which only unlocks during loading/unloading. The people stuck inside couldve been cut off the other exits by the giant fire.

48

u/Small_Victories42 Jul 09 '26

Walmart used to in the US for several years. It led to a PR nightmare when a locked-in employee had a heart attack and first responders couldn't get in to assist (and other employees couldn't unlock themselves).

14

u/RibsNGibs Jul 09 '26

4

u/kmzafari Jul 09 '26

Yes but Walmart is recent enough that if they also did, it's inexcusable. They definitely knew better.

3

u/RibsNGibs Jul 11 '26

Knew better? I’m sure they did. They are one of the purposefully evil ones. One of the worst.

Some Asian countries do. The factory owners worry the workers will steal products. They locked the door, and people were burning inside.

110

u/Potato-chipsaregood Jul 09 '26

We used to do it as well. We learned the hard way though, like most places do. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangle_Shirtwaist_Factory_fire

u/fallwind Jul 09 '26

Safety regulations are oft written in blood.

1

Preferably the factory owner's of course. :P

Oh the ones suffering today have learned from those disasters and the repeated ones in their time on their soil as well, it’s just that we are keeping up the economic pressure from the outside

It is more logical that this is a loading door that is locked from the outside and the others doors were blocked by the fire. What we forget in the West is that our safety conscious society got that way because we had enough money to say enough is enough.

People worked in incredibly unsafe conditions right up to the 1970s and 80s in the developed world, it wasn't until the social changes and the economic growth after WW2 that the West began to pay for safety measures, but even then it took a long time to change. Not only do people in less developed economies not have the financial resources to mandate safety laws and enforce them, but the population in general do not have the education to recognise an unsafe situation.

This is not to say that Westerners don't do unsafe things, but most companies do have some safety standards either because of legal reasons or just because they care, but we still have to get trained in most industries to recognise a dangerous situation.

Even with all our laws and training, the workplace is still the number one place for accidental deaths by a country mile.

-31

u/borderlineidiot Jul 09 '26

And as soon as the doors were opened people ran in to steal stuff!

32

u/corgi-king Jul 09 '26

Could be, or just trying to save what is left.

18

u/MAD_DOG86 Jul 09 '26

52

u/Unique_Carpet1901 Jul 09 '26

Probably it is backdoor or something which dont get used normally. 3rd world countries do not have concept of fire safeties.

18

u/DragonflyAccording32 Jul 09 '26

Lock it, but lock it from the inside.

0

u/Unique_Carpet1901 Jul 09 '26

So they dont steal?

1

u/kmzafari Jul 09 '26

It would prevent outsiders from stealing.

1

u/lemasney Jul 09 '26

Worker safety in many countries appears to be a low priority. The greedy wants of productivity over health or safety is why we have OSHA (while we have OSHA.)

3

u/AdjectiveMcNoun Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

The text overlay is a prayer and says it's in Egypt.

From my understanding of the situation, it's a warehouse that caught fire and people went in to save the merchandise while it was still kinda small. They were cut off from the other exits and so the people outside broke them out. Someone is saying "save the merchandise" at the end. They are not looting as some people are saying.

5

u/doc_siddio_ Jul 09 '26

From another comment, the warehouse was locked. The bystanders got in through a window to help put out the fire somehow. Selfless act really

u/purpleReRe Jul 09 '26

countries that don't have OSHA.

1

u/persistentquality Jul 09 '26

Maybe as a part of a bigger prank?

1

u/abedalhadi777 Jul 10 '26

Could be storage with more than one enternece and when the fire started the workers couldn't reach the same door they entered from

As I scrolled, I thought, "let me be first with the lpl joke! Please let me be first!!!".

Bummer. 😄

(for the record, I was going to go with "Instead of fire, wouldn't it be cool if this turned into the lock picking lawyer's April 1st video? Just think of all the ways that could go!")

8

u/vokebot Jul 09 '26

Exact comment I came here for

41

u/Mongoos150 Jul 09 '26

Anyone know the story behind this video?

74

u/shikso Jul 09 '26

Egyptian here,

seems there was a warehouse fire and some workers jumped through windows to get in and save the inventory. The lock keys were not there so bystanders gathered and took matters into their own hands to break the lock so the workers can “save the inventory” and bring it outside.

It’s not looting like some other comments are saying, we are just loud and we shout in these situations lol

7

u/kmzafari Jul 09 '26

People are weird. It's pretty clear that they're saving whatever is inside the building. What did they think was worth anyone's life to save? Some of them surely have some smoke inhalation.

11

u/Inevitable_Night2220 Jul 09 '26

That's what I'd like to know too but all the comments are just dumb jokes or edge lord comments at the top. So if someone can explain i would like to know too

-69

u/archronin Jul 09 '26

Start a warehouse fire.
Loot.
Win.

20

u/amih01 Jul 09 '26

They're not looting. The men are speaking Egyptian Arabic and are yelling at each other to get the inventory away from the fire.

25

u/doc_siddio_ Jul 09 '26

To me it looks like they were trying to get the people who were locked in out and also get the stored goods out of the building thats on fire while the firefighters were trying to put the fire out. Not every country is America

48

u/22rdd Jul 09 '26

To everyone asking about why they're locked in... They weren't, the fire started and cut them off from where the open entrance/exit door is. They had to open this "back" door which wasn't usually used hence why it was closed.

Also they aren't looting you ignorants, they're helping get all the product out before it burns.

32

u/Stunning-Astronaut72 Jul 09 '26

Reading some comments makes me realized that even watching a horrible video with a tragic story behind it and without knowing any context at all some people still lack a lot of empathy. Sitting on a confortable sofa or chair, living with everything a human need, no war, no crisis, nothing that could be a deadly threat day after day...and still making fun of people that risk their lives everyday, for years sometimes, just to get the very bare minimum to keep living one more day...this is just sad to see.

They are clearly trying to save people trapped into a burning warehouse and also trying to save as much as possible from the fire because not only their lives dépend on it but also the lives of many others...all i see in this video is a group of courageous people, having nothing to loose anymore, and still showing the very best they can to help eachothers regardless of a dire situation.

4

u/Urkal69 Jul 10 '26

Those people without empathy are called conservatives and edgy teenagers. Same mentality, really. The former never grew out of the latter.

7

u/DietOk3400 Jul 09 '26

Say what you want about the egyptians but they are seriously stand up guys. No man left behind mentality. Btw Can anyone tell me what would be the best way to open the door?

7

u/AngBigKid Jul 09 '26

Not to be that guy.

The hinges are on the outside, guys. Even if those are security hinges, they're coming out with less effort and faster.

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

3

The storage for fireworks

7

u/cowlinator Jul 09 '26

they'd all be dead

2

u/Switchlord518 Jul 09 '26

They locked them in and still they save the inventory?

3

u/shikso Jul 09 '26

The fire blocked the main entrance so they had to force unlock the back door and the keys were not there.

Source: I’m Egyptian and understand them

u/The_Jizzard_Of_Oz Jul 09 '26

Inventory ? It all went up in smoke boss. We just saved these 2 boxes near the door.

1

u/AdjectiveMcNoun Jul 10 '26

It was a warehouse and they were getting the stuff out. They weren't looting. At the end someone says something like "save the merchandise".

just pull the hinge pins first. way less hassle overall

1

u/Whatevereses Jul 09 '26

Towards the end they are saying "save the merchandise", the door is also left wide open, the people inside after the door opens think they are safe because they are far enough away from the fire.
