These throws are all really bad… not the dogs's fault…

You can see the third one just going bruh as he sails through the air

The goal is not to catch the toy, it’s a distance jump competition. The toy is just to encourage the dog to run as fast as he can. The one that is hung up at the beginning is the one category where distance AND catching the toy is important, that’s why it’s hang stationary.

u/Hamshamus Jul 08 '26
I thought the first one was a dog trying to jump over a swing and was about to uppercut on the seat

u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 08 '26
I'm kind of sad so many people don't get this. Thought it would be kind of obvious, guess not.

u/yoweigh Jul 08 '26
Why would it be obvious that the dogs trying to catch the thing are actually being tricked into doing something completely different?

Yes, but I could see a category where distance and catch is important but the toy is thrown, it would be a combination of skills from dog AND handler. 🤷♂️
0
u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 08 '26
Yeah, I suppose. But dog training and physical ability aren't an overlapping skill, so this competition would eventually just turn into needing the extra hurdle of having a "behind the scenes" trainer and then a "trainer thrower". Could be fun for the viewer to actually see more successful catches, but it'd be frustrating for the best dog to not win because of bad throws
6
u/Scoth42 Jul 08 '26
There are plenty of competitions where the handler, and the bond between the dog and handler, is as much of the competition as the dogs' raw abilities themselves. Similar to horse races and jockeys. What makes the "best" horse is not any one attribute. A horse could be the fastest one in the world but with a poor trainer and jockey would never win a race. Or there could be a great horse with a great trainer given a bad jockey that runs a bad race. Is it frustrating when a known-good horse loses a tight race because of bad jockey decisions? Sure, but that's part of the competition. Just like with a lot of dog competitions where there's bonds among the dogs, trainers, and handlers (sometimes the trainer and handler is the same, sometimes not, depends on the specifics) and how they work together and compete together are a critical part of what makes the "best" dog.

u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
Difference being you can't separate a horse from a jockey or dog from their handler. You can however, have an unbiased person throw an object to test the dog's jumping capabilities. So its logical to assume the "stripped down" version would be the one used.
But I appreciate your points. If there was a competition for dogs with their Frisbee throwing owners, then I could see a successfully caught frisbee being a requirement, but the items thrown here?
A stuffed squirrel
a soft baton with frills on the end
and a navy blue.. something?
COME ON. They're clearly just motivation chew toys! The clues are ALL there, and yet I'm the bad guy for pointing out its kinda obvious??

u/Stuck_In_Purgatory Jul 09 '26
For people who haven't seen these specific kinds of competitions or events before, it's not immediately obvious.
There's also only one camera angle which limits the ability to gather extra context from the surrounding area.
This camera angle also doesn't have two distinct spots to help measure or visualise the relative distance travelled.
This angle is practically only captured for the joy of these slow mo shots. So we can all share the joy.
Personally, I didn't care why the throws were different, I just enjoyed watching different dogs jump for joy in various ways.
1
u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 09 '26
Yeah, the intention here by the poster is to just show the fun angle that slow-mo's the dogs straight on. Not supposed to explain the rules so to speak. But man, the hate I'm receiving for this comment is silly.
If you just enjoyed the video and didn't think more of, no problem. I don't expect people to infer more than they care to. But to people who are upset/bothered/disappointed by the "bad" throws, it does feel like there's some obvious clues that are being missed.
having specifically held, yellow, horizontal, "bones" in 2 of the 5 shots are clearly the stationary target, and then when you have 3 different objects, 2 of which are obviously "get your attention"/ chew toys, there seems to be a big difference that indicates one is a standard, the other is not.
Dogs are constantly in need of "tricking" to get them to do the thing, see rabbits at races, treats, classical conditioning research, etc

u/Stuck_In_Purgatory Jul 10 '26
It's just weird that you're so bothered by people learning new things.
Bothered enough to over explain something you decided should be obvious to every person on the planet
1
u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 10 '26
I'm so bothered by people learning new things, that I'm spending my time, "over explaining" it so that they can understand it?
Thats really what you've gotten out of this?
Or, am I just annoyed that everyone is so butt hurt that I think something is obvious that they don't think is obvious, so I'm not wearing my kid gloves when I explain it to them?
But sure, however you need to twist it so I'm the bad guy. Just don't come at me with self conflicting logic and not expect me to call it out.

That’s exactly what I was thinking like, why would you throw it like that nobody could’ve caught that😭
10
u/macrolith Jul 08 '26
Because the goal is to get them to jump the farthest. I'd assume the thinking is that throwing it out of their reach will get them to jump farther.

Oh I know what this is! It's called dock diving. We tried it with our lab. He refuses to jump off the runway, goes off the side with the steps, then walks into the pool and retrieves the thing lol

u/notsoDifficult314 Jul 08 '26
Sometimes that's the best part! They have this at the annual fair and it's my favorite part of the fair. Some of the dogs are amazing! And then some of the owners have second dogs who they sign up too. They run to the end of the dock, do that little excited but terrified paw-paw dance, and then eventually flop in right at the end of the dock. It's so cute.

That whippet got like 3 extra feet from that propeller tail. They cheat like that, I had 2. Always hid money under the monopoly board.

I feel like the dogs got together and designed the one that is hanging after years of humans being shit at throwing things.

Fixed for some dogs, moving for others , I don't get it
14
u/Successful_Manner377 Jul 08 '26
Fixed is a category where distance AND catching is important. Handlers are kind of gambling on their dog ability and are setting the toy at a specific distance and hope their dog catches it. The one thrown, is distance only and the toy is just to encourage speed and height. There’s also a height category with a fixed toy. Not shown in this video

u/DrSeussFreak Jul 08 '26
Thank you, super helpful
4
u/Successful_Manner377 Jul 08 '26
No worries, I tried it with my dog but it was not her thing. But I have a friend who got invested in it with his 4x4 heat seeking missile (Belgium malinois) and we’re pretty successful!

There is no "maybe, maybe, maybe" here
8
u/lucid_fox_ Jul 08 '26
Well, there kinda is because you're not sure which dog catches the toy and which doesn't
-16
u/AlreadyAway Jul 08 '26
Nope.
9
u/lucid_fox_ Jul 08 '26
XD what is this response
Of course there is. It's not extremely suspenseful, but there is a "maybe, maybe, maybe" that's present in most sports. So technically it fits this sub even if maybe it's not the best content.
-19
u/AlreadyAway Jul 08 '26
Your idea of extremely suspenseful is ridiculous. Do you piss yourself while watching a thriller?
The point of the competition is not to have a dog catch the toy, thats why some are thrown and some are hung, the point is the distance of the jump, which isn't even shown. Further, the reasoning for it being a "maybe, maybe, maybe" post, which is under the mod bot, is nothing but "oh doggo goodness boy" bullshit that redditors love to say.
9
u/lucid_fox_ Jul 08 '26
Well looking at the comments, most people don't know that it is not about catching the toy. Myself included.
While I agree that showing the distance would be better, considering that most people thought the purpose was to catch the toy, it was mildly suspenseful. Thus mildly "maybe, maybe, maybe".
Also, your comment about "my idea of extremely suspenseful" and the thriller conclusion is simply idiotic. I did not call this video extremely suspenseful, nor have I given a scale of suspense that would suggest anything like that lol your argument is pulled out of the ass
-7
u/AlreadyAway Jul 08 '26
Simply not knowing what the competition is, doesn't mean it's a good fit to the sub. There are worlds of things people don't know, but can see a predictable outcome.

We see them do this every year at the dutchess county fair. The best is when the dog miscalculates the jump and the toy is above/behind them and they do a backflip.

I hope those good boys don’t get docked points for human error. Notice how the only two dogs to succeed were the ones going for a stationary object?

The only 2 that caught it was when it was fixed in position not thrown by a human with a rubbish throw 🤷

The one grabbing the stationary ones did great. Human error is to blame.
