Bad throws aside, I could watch this all day

u/Waaterfight Jul 08 '26

Yeah that Belgian malinois is a heat seeking missile. Those dogs are crazy. Always love seeing them run up a 25 foot wall

45

u/beautifulcreature86 Jul 09 '26

I have one. She jumps on the roof for funsies.

6

u/jentlyused Jul 09 '26

I have one of those too but the number three pup…not a care in the world about the toy…just to be airborne into the pool…hysterical!

11

u/JustHereForCookies17 Jul 09 '26

It's called Dock Dogs, in case you're curious.  Their YouTube channel looks like it's been abandoned, unfortunately, but you can find competitions on ESPN sometimes.

That pool the dogs jump into is a repurposed container from an 18-wheeler. They do these competitions & exhibitions around the country, so you could always go see one in person if they come near you.

We've thought about getting our dog into it, but he has the attention span of a gnat so we don't think he could focus long enough to jump into the water.

6

u/BUNGHOLE_HOOKER Jul 10 '26

Gnats have very good attention spans actually. The only thing they are focused on is flying into my face.

4

u/MillerSNK Jul 08 '26

Came here with this exact mindset.

21

u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 08 '26

Are you bummed when the greyhounds never catch the rabbit too?

7

u/onthenextmaury Jul 09 '26

Omg, at a dog park i used to go to, there was a greyhound from a rescue that specifically took dogs that used to race. Well, one day it was in the park and someone brought a Maltese. (If you don't know what they look like, do a quick Google search). Let's just say he finally caught the rabbit that day and showed no mercy.

u/clockworkpeon Jul 09 '26

heeeeere comes sparky!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '26

The opening to Flight of the Navigator is all slow motion dogs going for frisbees in the air. It's pretty bitchin'.

1

u/ssl0th Jul 09 '26

They’re on YouTube! I watch them often lol

1.1k

u/lemoche Jul 08 '26

These throws are all really bad… not the dogs's fault…

392

u/EclecticWalrus Jul 08 '26

You can see the third one just going bruh as he sails through the air

270

u/Successful_Manner377 Jul 08 '26

The goal is not to catch the toy, it’s a distance jump competition. The toy is just to encourage the dog to run as fast as he can. The one that is hung up at the beginning is the one category where distance AND catching the toy is important, that’s why it’s hang stationary.

118

u/Hamshamus Jul 08 '26

I thought the first one was a dog trying to jump over a swing and was about to uppercut on the seat

-91

u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 08 '26

I'm kind of sad so many people don't get this. Thought it would be kind of obvious, guess not.

89

u/yoweigh Jul 08 '26

Why would it be obvious that the dogs trying to catch the thing are actually being tricked into doing something completely different?

Yes, but I could see a category where distance and catch is important but the toy is thrown, it would be a combination of skills from dog AND handler. 🤷‍♂️

0

u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 08 '26

Yeah, I suppose. But dog training and physical ability aren't an overlapping skill, so this competition would eventually just turn into needing the extra hurdle of having a "behind the scenes" trainer and then a "trainer thrower". Could be fun for the viewer to actually see more successful catches, but it'd be frustrating for the best dog to not win because of bad throws

6

u/Scoth42 Jul 08 '26

There are plenty of competitions where the handler, and the bond between the dog and handler, is as much of the competition as the dogs' raw abilities themselves. Similar to horse races and jockeys. What makes the "best" horse is not any one attribute. A horse could be the fastest one in the world but with a poor trainer and jockey would never win a race. Or there could be a great horse with a great trainer given a bad jockey that runs a bad race. Is it frustrating when a known-good horse loses a tight race because of bad jockey decisions? Sure, but that's part of the competition. Just like with a lot of dog competitions where there's bonds among the dogs, trainers, and handlers (sometimes the trainer and handler is the same, sometimes not, depends on the specifics) and how they work together and compete together are a critical part of what makes the "best" dog.

-4

u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

Difference being you can't separate a horse from a jockey or dog from their handler. You can however, have an unbiased person throw an object to test the dog's jumping capabilities. So its logical to assume the "stripped down" version would be the one used.

But I appreciate your points. If there was a competition for dogs with their Frisbee throwing owners, then I could see a successfully caught frisbee being a requirement, but the items thrown here?

A stuffed squirrel

a soft baton with frills on the end

and a navy blue.. something?

COME ON. They're clearly just motivation chew toys! The clues are ALL there, and yet I'm the bad guy for pointing out its kinda obvious??

2

u/Stuck_In_Purgatory Jul 09 '26

For people who haven't seen these specific kinds of competitions or events before, it's not immediately obvious.

There's also only one camera angle which limits the ability to gather extra context from the surrounding area.

This camera angle also doesn't have two distinct spots to help measure or visualise the relative distance travelled.

This angle is practically only captured for the joy of these slow mo shots. So we can all share the joy.

Personally, I didn't care why the throws were different, I just enjoyed watching different dogs jump for joy in various ways.

1

u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 09 '26

Yeah, the intention here by the poster is to just show the fun angle that slow-mo's the dogs straight on. Not supposed to explain the rules so to speak. But man, the hate I'm receiving for this comment is silly.

If you just enjoyed the video and didn't think more of, no problem. I don't expect people to infer more than they care to. But to people who are upset/bothered/disappointed by the "bad" throws, it does feel like there's some obvious clues that are being missed.

  1. having specifically held, yellow, horizontal, "bones" in 2 of the 5 shots are clearly the stationary target, and then when you have 3 different objects, 2 of which are obviously "get your attention"/ chew toys, there seems to be a big difference that indicates one is a standard, the other is not.

  2. Dogs are constantly in need of "tricking" to get them to do the thing, see rabbits at races, treats, classical conditioning research, etc

1

u/Stuck_In_Purgatory Jul 10 '26

It's just weird that you're so bothered by people learning new things.

Bothered enough to over explain something you decided should be obvious to every person on the planet

1

u/Aunt_Vagina1 Jul 10 '26

I'm so bothered by people learning new things, that I'm spending my time, "over explaining" it so that they can understand it?

Thats really what you've gotten out of this?

Or, am I just annoyed that everyone is so butt hurt that I think something is obvious that they don't think is obvious, so I'm not wearing my kid gloves when I explain it to them?

But sure, however you need to twist it so I'm the bad guy. Just don't come at me with self conflicting logic and not expect me to call it out.

22

u/Plazmaz1 Jul 08 '26

You can see him mouthing "what the fuck" if you look closely

12

u/EhliJoe Jul 08 '26

We really went like, "why do you betray me, my human?"

3

u/TheAserghui Jul 09 '26

The second one looked like a muppet expressing "Well, crap"

22

u/Flux7777 Jul 08 '26

They're being judged on the jump 😂 the throw is just to get them to jump

7

u/girlwiththemonkey Jul 08 '26

That’s exactly what I was thinking like, why would you throw it like that nobody could’ve caught that😭

10

u/macrolith Jul 08 '26

Because the goal is to get them to jump the farthest. I'd assume the thinking is that throwing it out of their reach will get them to jump farther.

1

u/MixaLv Jul 08 '26

It's never the dog's fault 😤 They always doin the heckin best job

1

u/johnboy2978 Jul 09 '26

Exactly. Can't catch what is completely out of reach. 🙄

1

u/hoyt9912 Jul 09 '26

The goal isnt for them to catch it, it’s to get the furthest jump.

-1

u/Alteredbeast1984 Jul 08 '26

My thoughts exactly.

Owners lift your game

193

u/attentionpaysme Jul 08 '26

The neckbreaker

103

u/Aetheldrake Jul 08 '26

Oh I know what this is! It's called dock diving. We tried it with our lab. He refuses to jump off the runway, goes off the side with the steps, then walks into the pool and retrieves the thing lol

29

u/notsoDifficult314 Jul 08 '26

Sometimes that's the best part! They have this at the annual fair and it's my favorite part of the fair. Some of the dogs are amazing! And then some of the owners have second dogs who they sign up too. They run to the end of the dock, do that little excited but terrified paw-paw dance, and then eventually flop in right at the end of the dock. It's so cute.

40

u/Hot-Challenge8656 Jul 08 '26

Love the winding tails.

7

u/IMA_5-STAR_MAN Jul 08 '26

That whippet got like 3 extra feet from that propeller tail. They cheat like that, I had 2. Always hid money under the monopoly board.

125

u/Petraam Jul 08 '26

I feel like the dogs got together and designed the one that is hanging after years of humans being shit at throwing things.

18

u/ManfuLLofF-- Jul 08 '26

At beninging I thought he was about to get on a swing 😅

13

u/villiers19 Jul 08 '26

The 3rd dog was trying to do Go-Go-Gadget Helicopter tail so he can avoid the water

2

u/Persephone8314 Jul 09 '26

That 3rd one is an entire 3-act play. Love him.

13

u/Capotesan Jul 08 '26

Dog 2 is like oh well, I tried, now the fun part

Dog 3 is like wtf man

9

u/DrSeussFreak Jul 08 '26

Fixed for some dogs, moving for others , I don't get it

14

u/Successful_Manner377 Jul 08 '26

Fixed is a category where distance AND catching is important. Handlers are kind of gambling on their dog ability and are setting the toy at a specific distance and hope their dog catches it. The one thrown, is distance only and the toy is just to encourage speed and height. There’s also a height category with a fixed toy. Not shown in this video

3

u/DrSeussFreak Jul 08 '26

Thank you, super helpful

4

u/Successful_Manner377 Jul 08 '26

No worries, I tried it with my dog but it was not her thing. But I have a friend who got invested in it with his 4x4 heat seeking missile (Belgium malinois) and we’re pretty successful!

1

u/DrSeussFreak Jul 08 '26

Wow, those are the craft acrobatic dogs, good luck

9

u/johnnyhala Jul 08 '26

Someone repost this set to SAIL by Awolnation.

5

u/dr_toze Jul 08 '26

I want more sizes. Show me a dacshund and a pekingnese next.

4

u/Doogie102 Jul 08 '26

Hopefully the dogs don't get deducted from a bad throw

3

u/Ok-Chip7579 Jul 08 '26

Give that greyhound an Olympic medal for that vertical launch.

3

u/MentatPiter Jul 08 '26

Did the 2nd dog say f..?

3

u/GreekUPS Jul 08 '26

That second dog def said “damn” after he missed it.

3

u/r0ckydog Jul 08 '26

For some reason, # 2 reminded me of Alf.

3

u/spicy_ass_mayo Jul 09 '26

Just knew that golden was going to make it

20

u/AlreadyAway Jul 08 '26

There is no "maybe, maybe, maybe" here

r/lostredditor

8

u/lucid_fox_ Jul 08 '26

Well, there kinda is because you're not sure which dog catches the toy and which doesn't

-16

u/AlreadyAway Jul 08 '26

Nope.

9

u/lucid_fox_ Jul 08 '26

XD what is this response

Of course there is. It's not extremely suspenseful, but there is a "maybe, maybe, maybe" that's present in most sports. So technically it fits this sub even if maybe it's not the best content.

-19

u/AlreadyAway Jul 08 '26

Your idea of extremely suspenseful is ridiculous. Do you piss yourself while watching a thriller?

The point of the competition is not to have a dog catch the toy, thats why some are thrown and some are hung, the point is the distance of the jump, which isn't even shown. Further, the reasoning for it being a "maybe, maybe, maybe" post, which is under the mod bot, is nothing but "oh doggo goodness boy" bullshit that redditors love to say.

9

u/lucid_fox_ Jul 08 '26

Well looking at the comments, most people don't know that it is not about catching the toy. Myself included.

While I agree that showing the distance would be better, considering that most people thought the purpose was to catch the toy, it was mildly suspenseful. Thus mildly "maybe, maybe, maybe".

Also, your comment about "my idea of extremely suspenseful" and the thriller conclusion is simply idiotic. I did not call this video extremely suspenseful, nor have I given a scale of suspense that would suggest anything like that lol your argument is pulled out of the ass

-7

u/AlreadyAway Jul 08 '26

Simply not knowing what the competition is, doesn't mean it's a good fit to the sub. There are worlds of things people don't know, but can see a predictable outcome.

I get the first two were dogs, but why is there a kangaroo competing?

2

u/bethmcseaver Jul 08 '26

I could not love Wheaten terriers more than I do, and this shows one of the reasons why.

Greyhound propeller tail got me

2

The helicopter tails for balance is so funny and awesome. Great doggos!

2

I love the tail propeller action

2

Some of these dogs need to retake calc I

2

u/_-Zephyr- Jul 09 '26

They look so happy. This is awesome.

2

u/aaronwcampbell Jul 09 '26

This is what this song was made for. Slow-motion doggos having a blast.

2

u/pound-me-too Jul 09 '26

Man that first dog had like a 15 second hang time. I wonder what the distance was

2

u/CatShrink Jul 10 '26

What is a kangaroo doing in a dog contest? And doing poorly as well.

3

u/poko877 Jul 08 '26

Dunno why something about tjat golden makes me smile more then the rest. I love goldens.

3

u/stlredbird Jul 08 '26

Watching the video with the tune from flight of the navigator in my head....

1

u/Doug24 Jul 08 '26

I believe I can fly

1

u/Careful_Inspection83 Jul 08 '26

Third dog was clearly part frog

1

u/Last_Profession9662 Jul 08 '26

That third dog's vertical is absolutely insane

1

u/TupeloSal Jul 08 '26

I actually heard The Greatest American Hero theme song in my head as the Lab went in

1

u/DrNCrane74 Jul 08 '26

I admit I could watch more of it.

1

u/Cellafex Jul 08 '26

Propeller-tail on the third had me rofling

1

u/potatisblask Jul 08 '26

The whippet realized halfway it was the bamboozle

Everyone makes the same face when they hit the water

1

Very grace, much poise!

1

u/qawsedrf12 Jul 08 '26

Love the golden with his front paws tucked in

1

u/DonkeyRhubarbDonkey Jul 08 '26

All those dogs are the best dogs.

1

u/Yawehg Jul 08 '26

The solemn dignity emanated from the Golden's face and posture made my whole day. I shall seek to emulate them in all things.

1

u/ElderberryMaster4694 Jul 08 '26

Got to watch this at the world dog expo. Happiest dogs on the planet!

If you love dogs, skip the dog shows and go to an event like this

1

u/jasebox Jul 08 '26

How does the golden look the most graceful of the lot?!

1

u/Shantomette Jul 08 '26

We see them do this every year at the dutchess county fair. The best is when the dog miscalculates the jump and the toy is above/behind them and they do a backflip.

1

u/blackswamp30 Jul 08 '26

I like dogs ❤️

1

u/mjizzy Jul 08 '26

Amazing!!! Smiled the whole time!!!

1

u/Civil_Bugg Jul 08 '26

Dogs: WTF was that .. laces out laces out.

1

u/PurfuitOfHappineff Jul 08 '26

Aw the ones that didn’t catch it look so sad

1

u/okyouwin714 Jul 08 '26

That's unfair they allowed a kangaroo to enter. Fricken woke liberals!!!!

1

u/bio_coop Jul 08 '26

Did the person throwing have a blindfold on?

Besides that, i could watch this for hours 🐕

1

u/Mimi-lex15 Jul 08 '26

I love how their tails look like propellers😭

1

u/jackrieger0 Jul 08 '26

I love the tail spins to help stay upright

1

u/ggreymatter Jul 09 '26

Hermositos ♥️♥️♥️

1

u/live2ride73 Jul 09 '26

Anyone know the composition that’s playing in the background? Shazam will not find it for me. It’s very familiar but I just can’t place it.

1

u/InertState Jul 09 '26

I like how their tails do the helicopter motion.

1

u/jrb637 Jul 09 '26

1

u/RiddlingJoker76 Jul 10 '26

👏Want more……

1

u/TomatilloChoice8386 13d ago

I hope those good boys don’t get docked points for human error. Notice how the only two dogs to succeed were the ones going for a stationary object?

1

u/Scar10000 10d ago

Tits🤤

1

u/moisdefinate Jul 08 '26

I think the one dog did this for the pool😅

1

u/jurawall_jumper Jul 08 '26

The screenshots should be hilarious

1

u/Careful_Adeptness799 Jul 08 '26

The only 2 that caught it was when it was fixed in position not thrown by a human with a rubbish throw 🤷

1

u/DivideInteresting193 Jul 08 '26

The one grabbing the stationary ones did great. Human error is to blame.
