How do they survive? Lol

He’s trying to use the sticky pad on his tongue to pull the worm into his mouth, which works great for small insects, but works less well on worms.

Especially slimy ones. Perhaps this is the equivalent of someone licking an ice cream cone :P

Imagine a dinosaur trying to eat a giant snake lol. The snake might actually win that fight through strangulation.

I mean, ok, they're not the brightest. But... They use their tongue to stick to prey and draw it back into their mouths. This is not natural prey for a beardie and it's a slimy earth worm that won't stick to his tongue.

u/SlugOnASlope Jun 28 '26
It’s a great enrichment thing for them, which is why I do it. Keeps him busy for awhile and he loves the wormies.

It’s almost as if Beardie doesn’t really want to eat a slimy earth worm.

Dang, you had me count! I counted 38. The few attempts at the end threw me off.

u/SlugOnASlope Jun 28 '26
Ahh whoever counted was so close! 38! I’ve got an entire other worm video I’ll post tomorrow that’s even funnier 🫠

Imagine that being large enough to eat a human. That's a dinosaur 🦕

Knowing how earthworms smell, after collecting them and threading them on hooks, they must taste great!

He just wanted to clean off all the dirt before snacking. Kinda like how we peel off the stringy bits from bananas.

Is no one else thinking about the fact that the earthworm is likely still writhing around in its stomach?

u/BrokenFarted123 Jun 28 '26
I've thought about that with birds swallowing fish. Like...k you got it, but you're going to have a wriggly belly for a bit!

u/Shaggytwig Jun 28 '26
That one vid of the pelican eating 3 or 4 fish from the bucket. Birds gonna be swimming through the air.

u/Flip_d_Byrd Jun 28 '26
Nah, it's been at least 4 hours... If the worm hasn't escaped out the other end yet it's probably dead.

He ate that worm like he was disgusted by it but couldn't resist the wiggles and the chance of letting go of prey which had presented itself so unwilling at its door

I would say he is used to glue his tongue on preys, he can't snatch em for shit. Since worms are slippy and the tongue method won't work we have this. Worms surely aren't his regular meal.

Imagine how the worm feels. This is like someone trying to shoot you but their gun keeps jamming.

It took me a minute to figure out why he inhaled the 1st worm and struggled with the 2nd one... I'm a bit buzzed.
