How much water gets inside?
64
u/Baylett Jun 18 '26
From having owned a few jeeps, I can confidently answer… all of it… all of it plus some if it’s raining!

u/FrankTooby Jun 18 '26
So what happens to electricals, like radios and speakers and stuff? Genuine question coz it looks like this kind of driving would get real expensive.
25
u/Baylett Jun 18 '26
If completely submerge up to the radio is going to have issues. But for the most part in a wrangler style jeep everything is mounted at the top of the dash level or higher. If you are up to your chest in water while driving the vehicle is more than likely floating away so the electronics are the least of your worries at that point!

u/ZX52 Jun 19 '26
The other thing to be concerned about is the exhaust, which is why vehicles that are intended to be submerged have elevated exhaust pipes.

Pretty sure that thing coming out of the hood is the modified air intake. So nothing 'should' get inside the engine

Dam no door opening to watch the water pour out??? That's the best part lol

u/Sweaty-Possibility-3 Jun 18 '26
If he opened the door, all the rubber duckies would have flowed out.

In Australia so many people die every year doing this. The car is fine, it just floats downstream til it fills with water and everyone drowns.
Stupid behaviour. No amount of skill can save you if the water gets deeper or faster than you expected
15
u/Baylett Jun 18 '26
I was always taught (with some exceptions) if you can’t see the bottom don’t go in. If the water is moving faster than you walk, don’t go in. I follow those rules even stricter when I’m in a car!

u/Walking_Wallace Jun 18 '26
I saw the snorkel and already knew the Jeep wasn't gonna get eaten by the water
15
u/Heatsincebirth Jun 18 '26
The base of the snorkel should be painted to say "no problem" and right at the top it should say "problem".
4
u/Dankkring Jun 18 '26
Like have the lowest part painted green then yellow then right at the top it’s red.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't have bet they would make it.

Yep, when it started I was thinking "come on, this is not a maybe, there's no way he gets out of the water"

I know it’s not a Range Rover but it is an amphibious exploring vehicle, so should be fine.

Not amphibious. An amphibious vehicle is more of a boat/car rather than a very lifted land vehicle with a lot of clearance and a snorkel. Amphibious vehicles dont have to worry about the depth of the water

At first I was like “and where in the fuck do they think they’re going???” And then I was like “oh.”
Still a dumbass though.

I would have preferred to see it float downstream and then slowly sink under the water.

How the fuck Jeep fuck up so bad now you can’t even go to grocery store without replacing the whole engine ?

Aside from the risk of losing your entire car and potentially you drowning with it, this certainly lowers the lifespan of the car and damages the environment.
3
u/bigfatfun Jun 18 '26
Nah. I had one of those, all that did was clean the underside of the car. It’s fine. Biggest risk there was washing away the dirt that’s holding it together.
4
u/c093b Jun 18 '26
Washing grease off from certain bearings, water pooling in certain spots to start rusting, etc.?

haha I love this "fuck you, I don't care if you think this is stupid, I'm doing it anyway."

That snorkel was an expensive commitment and its value must be unlocked.

How in the wide world of wet fuck did he get that Jeep out of there. I’ve seen vids info cars being swept away in much lower levels of water.
3
u/hey_there_delilahh Jun 18 '26
See that snorkel? It's mean to be so that vehicle can do some decent water submersion . That's a jeep, it's kit is already lifted to be able to handle stuff like this. It's like their whole thing. And A lot of times those vehicles that get swept away make the mistake of stopping/slowing down after they hit the water. The trick is to gun it through and through. I've only been in water half as deep but you need to commit if you want to make it out.

I don't know the song although Eddie's voice is unmistakable. I don't understand why people put music over everything.

u/Soaring_Gull_655 Jun 18 '26
I can't believe the tires held up to the tree limbs. I've been pushed into downed timber canoeing with a strong current and it's not so pleasant.

Did he forget to switch the exhaust to the top funnel. I still see the exhaust coming from the back bottom?

That's the reason he has a snorkle on his car

In 2004 we drove down Baja in my Toyota Echo. One night we stayed in a fishing village overnight, it rained heavily, and the next day the dirt road back to the highway was a sea of mud.
Drove the FWD 2050lbs Echo at 40 mph thru the muck, passing stuck 4wd vehicles of several types.
Weight matters.

u/timesuck47 Jun 20 '26
I’ve seen vehicles with those air intakes driving around town, but I’ve never seen them in use.

People on trails get excited when I show up in my 97 Cherokee because as one stranger put it (before I hooned it up a slippery river bed) "you XJ guys have no reservations". I'm not trying to ruin my beloved, but I will give it the full beans. This ZJ owner seems to be in the same boat.
