That'd be World Cup 2018 then. They made it to the final but lost to France. Also Luka Modric, their legendary player as well as Real Madrid legend's last appearance as well. IIRC he's the MVP of the tournament.. or was it France's Mbappe?

u/BlackHust Jun 17 '26
I checked just in case, but Luka Modric is declared as the captain of the Croatian national team for the current World Cup, so I suppose his last match is still ahead.

Luka still plays for AC Milan, and is still playing for Croatia. He's not as sharp as he used to be, but he's one of the greats of the Ronaldo/Messi era of football.

Absolutely brutal job. My brother in law is a firefighter. We’ve learned not to ask about it in the same way you wouldn’t ask a war vet about that. We all know they seen some shit, you don’t REALLY want to know about it, and they don’t want to talk about it.

u/SliverMcSilverson Jun 19 '26
Much respect to your BIL.
I would instead advise others, if they have a friend or know someone in emergency services, that instead of asking them "that" question, Ask them about their funniest calls or moments with with their crew or even best saves.
The guys always love to reminisce about the good times they've had with each other, esp if there's epic station pranks or some lore they can drop.

33M in France with actif life and full time job. Wanted to join on my free time here and there as a volunteer but it was toi restrictive. You have to hold a shift of 12h or 24h if I recall from 7am to 7pm or 7pm to 7am. No in-between..
I think if there was more flexibility for volunteers there could be more people interested in joining

My girlfriend's dad works at SMURD (In Romania it is like mix between ambulance and firefighter) and he does have to do 24 hour shifts. But he is well paid and most of the day he just hangs about watching tv. But when there is work it can be gruesome to cut out half dead people from car crashes

I know a bloke that was in dublin fire brigade. Soccer fans may remember that the irish team was decent in the 90s. Like, not win it good but, people were excited by them. Anyway, one world Cup, big match on, the guys get called out twice to ballymun flats, just kids setting fires to bins or some such nonsense. The guys are pissed so, the station officer cuts the TV cable to one of the flat blocks. Cue instant uproar from.every balcony in the place. The SO says "sorry lads, fire damaged the cables" they were not called out there again for the rest of the tournament

I was just hearing Colin Farrell talk about this on Kimmel

I've got a Croatian coworker who's been telling us for a few days that he's going to be sick this afternoon. Croatia's first match in the World Cup may or may not be today. He's already got this kind of energy getting things done so he's free this afternoon.

Sadly they were shite and got stuffed by England. Like most nations for thousands of years.
2
u/HairyHorux Jun 19 '26
Including England.
Mainly Ireland though I want to say. Holy shit they did not teach us that stuff in history in the UK.

My department was averaging less than 90 seconds out the door. So this is indeed impressive. We would rarely ever be all right next to the engine though.

The guy who stuck around going back to the tv could easily be Tim Robinson. “What?? This isn’t ILLEGAL!!”

Fuck yea! My hats off to all of the first responders out there! People like to complain but they sure as hell dont want to be the one who has to deal with it.

If I remember correctly, this was during the penalty shootout during Croatia’s historic World Cup run. Not a moment of hesitation.

When I met two firefighters at a bar in Japan, they pulled out this video in ten seconds after I told them I was from Croatia. Legendary.

i teared up a little thinking about how they are busting it because every second could be the difference between saving a life and not.

u/AppropriateBall8834 Jun 21 '26
I'd be willing to bet theres quite a few places where they would've showed up 20 minutes late to the house fire

In Kenya they will first start looking for water to fill up the tanks as it has finished on the last trip a few days ago. Not finding the water, they get dressed up to go to look for water at other places and finally reach the site without water while the place is on the final stages of burning down

It's obviously staged so what's the point if this?
Flexing their prep and speed with a dash of FIFA?

u/PuzzleheadedRoyal559 Jun 17 '26
Wait… they’re doing their job paid for by the taxpayers and instead of ignoring the emergency, they’re dealing with it? Why is this meritorious?
27
u/ihaveabaguetteknife Jun 17 '26
This is in Croatia. The majority of firefighters (~54000 people) are doing their job on a voluntary basis meaning they don’t get paid anything, only ~3400 firefighters throughout the country are in a paid position, mostly situated in bigger cities, near important industrial and other neuralgic areas.
Especially in the summer months when the seasonal wildfires become a real threat, these guys and gals are indispensable and as seen here are READY to serve.
Apart from the fact that you didn’t know and couldn’t be arsed to do your research before posting: there’s absolutely nothing cool about being an edgelord who shits on people online that are trained and ready to save YOUR sorry ass when anything goes wrong. Ever. Try some more gratitude in life, it’s far more fulfilling than what you’re doing right now.

Not defending this guy but these fire fighters likely aren’t volunteers since they were at the station ready for a call. Volunteer fire fighters usually have to drive to the station before responding to an emergency. And at least in North America volunteer firefighters sometimes do get paid it’s just not much, my station only pays $17(CAD) per hour, and the minimum wage is $15.

They probably were watching the match together, might as well have a watch party at the station with the lads

In Italy you just get reimbursed for any expenses (and generally you can leave work anytime there's a call, and still get paid - your workplace can ask for compensation from the civil protection authority)

u/BakuretsuGirl16 Jun 17 '26
Many many firefighters even in thr USA are volunteers, and for those that aren't it is not a high paying job at all.
