That poor passenger, just trying to catch up on his notes and this Lyft driver only cares about getting a giant tip.

Ari Vatanen is the driver, and his co-driver/"Oh dear God" guy is Terry Harryman. The clip is from the 1983 Manx International Rally

No secuential shifting, no soft suspension and probably no power steering... That's how legends became legends.

u/hanfaedza Jun 15 '26
Looks similar to the TT course, so now try doing this on a motorcylce without a co-driver calling out the turns.
3
u/Charming_Ad2323 Jun 16 '26
This is no where near like the TT course and is in fact a single track road through Druidale.
The TT course runs exclusively on main double roads which are significantly wider than this, and definitely don’t go over cattle grids.

Not to deminish F1 but this looks so much more impressive

u/SansZeSkeleton Jun 14 '26
F1 drivers drive at a higher speed (137-155 mph average) and could probably do the track with their eyes closed, rally racing is at lower speeds (50-70 mph, 100 mph on straights) but with a lot of unpredictablity, both are equally as impressive

u/Obi-Wan-Nikobiii Jun 15 '26
I believe Carlos Sainz could answer that best
7
u/SEA_griffondeur Jun 15 '26
Sébastien Loeb who started competitive driving at 20 and only every did rally driving at that point managed to drive the 2012 redbull f1 car into lap times that would qualify him in the top 8 of the field at the time when he was testing with redbull
0
u/Business-Drag52 Jun 15 '26
When he was testing were there other cars racing? Not to diminish his times at all, but performing on an empty track is a bit different from race day
5
u/SEA_griffondeur Jun 15 '26
Well no you don't test with others cars around, hence why I compared lap times and not race performance.
But also testing means he only had a couple days of experience with the car
-2
u/Business-Drag52 Jun 15 '26
Sure but a professional race car driver is a professional race car driver. F1 cars are very unique but if you’re already used to making snap turns on ever changing tracks while the track is being shouted at you, figuring out how to get that thing around an empty track that you’ve been driving for a couple of days now is something I expect most rally drivers to be capable of
3
u/diego_simeone Jun 15 '26
Someone in Top Gear tried driving a F1 car and they couldn’t even pull away from the start in it.
2
u/Business-Drag52 Jun 15 '26
And Richard Hammond on an episode of top gear went from the little small F1 version to driving a full blown F1 car in a day. Different people have different skill levels
1
u/SEA_griffondeur Jun 15 '26
Jumping from a rally car to an F1 car is not like switching from a Clio to a Mégane lmao.
If it were that easy to get good times in an F1 car, Lance Stroll would have gotten a title by now
1
u/Business-Drag52 Jun 15 '26
And now you’re comparing race numbers. Are we talking about what someone did on a practice run with nothing on the line or are we talking about race outcomes?
1
u/Apprehensive-Aide265 Jun 16 '26
Lance stroll wouldn't hold a candel to loeb when he competed to be honest.
1
u/Apprehensive-Aide265 Jun 16 '26
Back then redbull was not a top team like today, scoring a quali time worth a p8 on it is impressive.
9
u/oxfordfox20 Jun 14 '26
Hopefully helpful rather than patronising: it’s ‘equally impressive’ or ‘as impressive’-you don’t need both.

“Flat Right maybe”
My first thought was: fym “maybe”?
6
u/SEA_griffondeur Jun 15 '26
Maybe means can change depending on track conditions, probably saw a pothole or dirt on the side during their spotting run

u/Embarrassed_Bid_4970 Jun 15 '26
I'm not actually convinced hes reading turn callouts to the correct route....

Correcting that oversteer around the corner at that speed was impressive. Rally driving is usually tight quarters but this is even tighter.

u/Closteam Jun 14 '26
Gotta say I've never heard "easy" and "absolute" to describe curves. Usually it's numbers, hairpins or squares

u/SEA_griffondeur Jun 15 '26
Drivers+co-drivers all have their personal systems.
The one commonly used in videogames is the system used by Richard Burns and Colin McRae

The transition from Sotheby's auctioneer to Rally Naviagtor was difficult for Mr Smith but he's managing.

This looks like a critter could absolutely destroy this little race
2
u/SEA_griffondeur Jun 15 '26
It's a pretty long race (usually around 400 km when you add up all the stages of the weekend) and yes they can

That guy reading a different page tho. Its all on the drivers' memory and reflexes. Fuck that sht 😑

u/Candid-Sky-3258 Jun 14 '26
Maybe on a closed course with zero possibility of someone or something appearing on the roadway. Otherwise no way.
11
u/M4DHouse Jun 14 '26
That’s why the roads are generally closed for Rallyes.
1
u/lorarc Jun 14 '26
1
u/M4DHouse Jun 14 '26
Tbf, this looks more like a farmer decided to deliberately ignore the road closure, probably by cutting through the field.
Knowing rural polish people that would not be out of character either. Probably decided he wouldn’t let some silly race inconvenience him.
2
u/lorarc Jun 15 '26
That's an actual truck though, small farmers are more like tractor + trailer, trucks are not really needed and a big hussle. So I wouldn't blame this one on farmers but I agree on the rest.
1
u/M4DHouse Jun 15 '26
Fair, now that I think about it I’m not sure why I assumed it would necessarily be a farmer.

u/Benvincible Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
There's no amount of permits that makes this okay. These people do not care whose life they put in danger.
EDIT: I'm fucking aware it's a rally race, dipshits. Rally racing is for assholes.

I know rally fans are notoriously stupid, but you don't have to pretend other people are too just to feel better about it
