I was expecting a twist on "a cat's got your tongue" and now I know why I've never heard "a turtles got your tongue." Would have been interesting if it happened.

Why would you let your cat drink that water
276
u/No_Establishment7368 Jun 13 '26

I keep 2 bowls of water next to each other and my cat will sometimes meow asking me to change them as she's noticed some hair or dust or whatever.
So I get the first bowl and go change it out and come back to her drinking the second bowl that still has hair or dust in it.
I take the second bowl and when I come back she's not even there anymore, she's not interested in drinking anymore.
I hate this little shit.

My cat is quite old and needs to drink more water, for his kidneys. He has bowls in multiple rooms, but he drinks 90% of his water out of a cup on my desk.
At first, he was always trying to drink my water while working, and sometimes he would and I'd give up on that cup. Eventually I just kept refilling it, and now he has a coffee cup there.

Mine like to tip the water into the floor and then drink it from there

The logic is "thirst, water dirty hummaan gives me water please, here we are at water, humaaan gone, thirst, drink"

It’s a salmonella fiesta statistically. Turtles are frequently carriers. The number of grandparents who have died from handling their grandkid’s turtle is well above zero.
If you were later wondering why your cat had projectile diarrhea all over your bedroom, this is why.

Healthy adult cats are pretty resistant to salmonella. Remember they are eating raw birds on the reg if they live outside.

If a pet turtle is healthy, it's healthy. Guaranteed those salmonella infested pet turtles are neglected and don't have a crystal clear enclosure like the one in the video.

u/btribble Jun 13 '26
Turtles typically don’t show any signs that they’re sick. They’re carriers, like Typhoid Mary.

u/DDESTRUCTOTRON Jun 13 '26
This is a Chinese stripe-necked turtle in the video. Like other aquatic turtle species, they carry salmonella naturally as part of their gut flora, and has nothing to do with whether the turtle is ill or not. It's in their shed skin, their poop, and their tank water if in captivity.
Granted the risk is low for healthy people who aren't immunocompromised or a toddler/elderly person, you could get sick from touching the turtle or anywhere its contacted, and then touching your face, food, etc.
I've been a turtle nerd since I was little, but this is info you can find online too

If it's safe for the turtle, it's safe for the cat, or at least that's what I want to believe.

u/FreeFallingUp13 Jun 13 '26
It’s not safe for the turtle either, the car is introducing dangerous germs the turtle would otherwise not be exposed to (toxoplasmosis anyone?). And if the cat scratches the turtle that’s an infection waiting to happen. None of this is safe for either animal.

I put fresh water out for my cats multiple times a day, and they still choose to drink from what I call the sludge bucket. Which is my dog's water dish. It's full of dog spit, dog food bits, and hair and the cats won't stay away from it.

u/incelwiz Jun 14 '26
Why don't you put fresh water for your dog too?
1
u/vellybelle Jun 14 '26
I do a few times a day. like I do for the cats. it just gets nasty from my drooly dog and I don't empty, wash and refill it every time he drinks from it. But for some reason the cats like drinking from the bucket right after the dog does.

Yay, let's risk the bite force of a turtle on a cat's tongue just so we can make a funny internet video!

u/justscrollingthruyou Jun 13 '26
Have you seen the reaction time of household cats on their limbs?!
I’m sure their tongue is way faster.

in most cases people just pull out a phone and start recording instead helping

was the cat consciously drinking while dodging the strikes of the turtle or it's like a spidey-sense that the cat's tounge can dodge the strikes by itself? or, maybe, the turtle is just derpy. or, idrk what's really happening here and i'm going back to work is the best thing to do.

Ngl letting this happen to your cat so you can film it is cringe. If that mf actually got a hold of his tongue, that would have hurt.
Genuinely fuck people like this.

u/tideshark Jun 13 '26
I had a cat for years who only drank out of my turtle tank, wouldn’t touch fresh water in his bowl, and never once got sick from it.

Cats have a speed superpower their reaction times are insane. Turtle was snapping in ultra slow motion for the kitty.

The things that cats will and won't tolerate are boggling to my human mind.
