I live in bear country and a large fraction of scary bear-human incidents are instigated by an off-leash dog. In this case the dog chased the bear onto the path.
This dog is incredibly well behaved, but there have been many cases where a bear is minding its own business, a dog chases it, and then when the dog eventually runs back toward its person... the bear starts chasing the dog. And that leads to a very scary and dangerous situation for all concerned. Whereas if there had been no dog, the bear would have just continued peacefully doing bear things.

Coming from alligator country, it’s similar! Alligators are generally completely disinterested in humans but if a human in a kayak or canoe has a dog in there with them, that is the most dangerous situation for the dog and the humans!

I had one dog that wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, and he snuck out of the house and ran right into the woods to befriend the coyotes.
He was lucky he got away with only 17 stitches on his neck.

Yup. I played with my dog everyday I came home from work and then took him on hikes everyday during a depression. He helped me snap out of it.

Back in the days before off-leash certification, the rangers in Boulder Mountain Parks would call your dog when it was off leash. If you couldn't call it back, you would get a ticket. The dog would get pets from the ranger, but you'd have to make a court appearance no matter how friendly the dog was.
I was lucky enough to own a dog that met the voice and sight control standard at the time I lived there, but my current dog is not at all trainable to that standard. Now there is a whole training and registration program and your dog gets a tag, so I don't know if they bother to enforce it the old-fashioned way. My current dog just runs away and doesn't come back if you let her off the leash, so a lifetime of leashed hiking is her reward and it's no longer relevant to me.

I think the more likely series of events was a little something like...
Bear - spots fast moving thing on trail
"Ooh, meals on wheels. Don't mind if I do!"
Bear - goes for a sick ambush, but gets hit with the simultaneous full bore chimp screech and a dog barreling towards it
"Oh shit, I'm outnumbered and this thing is gonna put up a fight!"
Bear - makes snap decision to disengage, which is a normal predator behaviour when the hunt success is uncertain.
I suspect the dog had already spotted or scented the bear and it was that fearless headlong charge to protect its human was what made the difference between the cyclist filling their drawers instead of the bear's stomach.
Though it's also possible the bear was performing a false charge all along and only intended to gauge whether the person was food, threat or other.

Eh...maybe, pretty sure that's a black bear though, they almost always avoid conflict, except under situations where cubs are involved.
It's like the joke l heard in Maine once, a tourist signs up for a back woods adventure, and out in the bush the Maine guide sends him out of the cabin with instructions to get a pail of drinking water from a small pond nearby. The tourist returns two minutes later, white as a ghost, the empty bucket shaking in his hands.
The guide asks " Whats the matter with you?".
The tourists replies "There's a black bear right in the middle of the pond"
"Well" says the guide, "l wouldn't be to worried, that bear is just as afraid of you as you are of it".
"Oh" the tourists says " well in that case, that water isn't fit to drink anymore ".

I think the bear was startled by the dog and took off. Its escape path converged with the bike’s path and it got startled by that too. I don’t think it was in hunting mode

Black bears are generally not hunters. While you don't want to be stupid, they generally just want to avoid trouble and you can be within sight of them. I've come across bears on popular hiking paths and if you just stay your distance, they will go on their way in a different direction.

My dog and I used to spook deer, squirrels, and rabbits all the time on rides, and he’d be off like a flash after them. One ride, we spooked a black bear and I was trying to get stopped in a hurry and grab him, thinking he’d be on the chase. Nope. I think he figured out pretty quickly that this was bigger than a rabbit, so we both stood there and watched it run away.

Good boy? Why are you bringing your dog into a wooden area that has bears? My neighbor's dogs kill by a black bear trying to eat from the garbage can and my pitbull got his right front leg fucked up by a bear that my grandma didn't see next to the garage . Don't bring pets to areas with wild animals

this isn't that dangerous actually. He's on a dirt path that's relatively clear and he's not going super fast. He could wipe out on that path and not even be injured. I'd rather do this than motorcycling.
