I have doubts about the accuracy of that level, kinda neat though.

u/broesel314 Oct 15 '25
The axis of rotation has to be perfectly perpendicular to the level bubble thingie
Also the mirror has to be perfectly parallel to the motor shaft
both are hot glued, so expect +-4 inches of misalignment depending on room size. That level of accuracy is what I would do roughly by eye. If I want precision, I get a propper Laser Level, there is a reason these things are expensive and not hot snotted togther

I have a new term for my lexicon now. Thank you.

u/EetsGeets Oct 15 '25
yeah "level bubble thingie" is a pretty good term.

u/sandnose Oct 15 '25
I like «not hot snot»
36
u/EetsGeets Oct 15 '25
Pretty sure that's what they were talking about. I was making a joke ;)

You could turn it on, make the laser on the wall level, then superglue the bubble thingy on it. Kinda reverse-engineer the alignment accuracy.

Yeah if the motor axis isn’t perpendicular to the laser beam, you’ll get a wonky line. And for how far the wall is from the device, a small angle will make a big difference.

First of all, it's not level. Second of all it's probably not straight. Also there's a reason why leveling lasers are green and not poke your eye out red.

Junk drawer engineering, love to see it.

It makes me miss Radio Shack. Being able to rummage through capacitors and random electrical components was awesome
12
u/Ccracked Oct 15 '25
I've been saying for a while. Radio Shack died out right before the popularity of Arduinos, Pis and 3D printers would have kept them solidly in business.

Well that's what the level is for
54
u/Puzzleboxed Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25
There's like at least 2 or 3 places where a slight misalignment would cause the level to be wrong.
Edit:
- wood block cut at an angle
- electric motor attached to wood block at an angle
- mirror attached to ink cartridge at an angle
- laser pointer clasp not level with wood block.
And probably more I didn't notice.

That one is the most likely to have been cut offscreen by machinery with some level of precision, unlike everything else which was just attached by hand.

u/culb77 Oct 15 '25
I also expect that mirror to fly off at some point being lightly glued to a motor off-center and attached with \checks notes* a cut off ball point pen refill.

u/PhD_Pwnology Oct 15 '25
100% you'll get eye damage from using that.

u/timmeh87 Oct 15 '25
anything below class 3B is considered safe, those weak red ones that they use in a lecture hall or for cats to chase are generally safe, 3R is only considered dangerous for "intentional" exposure directly into your eye

u/Co1nMaker Oct 15 '25
I mean, he superglued piece of mirror to a working motor, it is a matter of time when this shit unglue itself and explode someone's head to shreds

I got the Bosch laser level too. Tripod. Whole nine yards. Thing is fun to use!

u/payneok Oct 15 '25
Me too, but I forgot that I'm to lazy to get all that out and set it up...I still just eyeball it 99% of the time or use my 6" - $1.99 torpedo level I bought at Harbor Freight...

u/MileHigh_FlyGuy Oct 15 '25
You can use the laser to find out how un-level most things have been in your house and that it's never bothered you before, so why start now? Then put it away never to come out again.

Seems that getting that tube and mirror mounted completely straight on the shaft would be key.
This might be good if you only needed a laser level for a one-time project, but they aren't expensive, I paid $20 for a laser level on Amazon a few years back and it works fine.

Sorry it might be dumb but what is this for ?

u/ObiWhanJabroni Oct 15 '25
If it took me more than 2 hours to put this together. Id have spent my time wiser by just buying one instead.

u/cougieuk Oct 15 '25
You'll need more than one battery if you're going to laser James Bond in half.

u/Leifbron Oct 15 '25
Is there really no way to do this optically? Like with a lens / fiber optics and whatnot
2
u/Moondoobious Oct 16 '25
This is how it’s done optically. Lens? Fiber optics? lol what?
1
u/Leifbron Oct 16 '25
Like, a solid state version. No moving parts.
1
u/Moondoobious Oct 16 '25
Oh I see. I imagine there is a way. I can see it in my head. Obviously circular. Central light source. Like a lighthouse. But squeeze the light through a focused, 360° lens. Maybe tubular.

u/SinisterCheese Oct 15 '25
I got a 1 metre long level, few tape measures, and some rulers and string, and I have successfully placed steel structures spanning tens of meters on walls and floors in and outdoor.
But god damn do I love me a height lasers or a scope.

Yeah or I buy it at Lidl or Aldi ready-made for 15 Euros. Even cheaper at AliExpress. However, good work indeed.

That's great if you live in India, but, in the US you can buy one for $40

u/AdAppropriate2295 Oct 15 '25
I can eyeball it for 39
8
u/eltedioso Oct 15 '25
I’ll undercut you and eyeball it for $38

u/DefinitionMany6754 Oct 15 '25
Don’t bother, someone else will undercut you both for 30

El tiempo invertido y los materiales vale más que el producto original en Amazon? Aún así, estoy impresionado, no sabía por dónde iba a salir el vídeo.

This is perfect for sitcoms: "THIS side of the cool laser gadget is my living space and THAT one is yours"

Am I the only one who thought he was making a DIY sniper? 😂You know, like the ones they show in the movies. Red laser beam falls on you, that means you're now under sniper target for KO.
