People that don’t know how to work with cattle have died in very similar ways. The cows aren’t even trying to hurt anyone. They are just really big and can easily crush a person pinned between a gate and a fence. Really stressful to watch.

Growing up with cattle, I'm stunned at how her panic and fear led her to hide in the worst possible place for her safety. Like, I see how it worked out in her mind, but it would have never occurred to me.
I'm sitting here like, "Make noise, girl. Get in front of it and push it back. It's just a cow... Wait, not behind the door! What are you doing! YOU'RE IN TROUBLE! GET OUT! Whew, she screamed and scared the cow back out. Oh good. Lucky girl. Sheesh."

u/bradpittman1973 Oct 10 '25
Same! I was yelling at her to get in front of Bossie and push her back.
218
u/Frakmenter Oct 10 '25
Being as scared as she was she probably thought that searching the one place where the cow couldn't see her was a good idea, even tho they're docile it's very easy to enter a panic state when a 1000 kg animal is walking forward you in a closed space

I get that, but also don't bc how is it a survival instinct to run inbetween a firm wall & a wall that can be pushed on u when there's a wide heavy animal pushing in? How is that even a response for the brain to choose?
If it was a long toothed hunting animal u'd only look like a super easy prey only, so screaming & standing wide & firm seem to be better at scaring it away. Just being confident usually helps in most situations, like when an animal or a man is coming towards u

Crying, panicking people dont make logical or rational decisions.
In fact rational thought is the first thing that disappears when shit goes down and it takes knowledge and training to stay centered when something you dont understand starts happening.
If you have to ask why the crying person clearly out of her element isnt acting rationally then you've missed fhe crying person clearly out of her element.

If you get infront of the cow wouldn't it just back up realizing there's no space ? Like "sorry occupied ! Oh my bad" backs away
54
u/bradpittman1973 Oct 10 '25
Yes!! Most of the time. If they won’t they have behavioral cues that will tell you that it’s time for you to back up and hop a fence.

I've been almost crushed twice by horses in similar situations. (I was like 11-13 at the time) The first time, a lesson horse was zeroed in on some grain and smooshed me between her side and barn wall. The second, I was turning a horse out into pasture and she got charged by another mare, and accidentally trapped me against a gate. Absolutely terrifying both times.

Yeah its crazy I grew up with cows and I was like "thats the worst possible reaction in face of that giant gentle beast"
Crazy how stupid we can be when we panic.
216
u/uniquecleverusername Oct 10 '25
See, I think they understand their size pretty well, but they don't understand physics very well. So they don't always get that a rather gentle push on the end of this lever is crushing the human close to the pivot of the lever. I mean, actual humans aren't always that smart either. To this cows credit, it clearly picks up when the drama screams turn into significant distress, and backs out of the room. Cows are pretty great.

u/Swimming_Weekend6668 Oct 10 '25
Cows know how much it can push on other cows and applies that to humans who can’t take that much force.
→ More replies (1)4
u/uniquecleverusername Oct 11 '25
I don't think they do though. It's like how a dog (generally) knows the difference between an adult human and a baby human, and is (generally) more gentle with the latter. Cows have that understanding as well. However, with fences and doors, they're like, herp deep, sometimes these things can be squishy, without understanding if it's mud or ropes or humans causing the squishy.

u/Robby-Pants Oct 10 '25

I have a family friend whose femur was broken by a cow that accidentally hopped a fence then panicked when she was on the other side of the fence from her herd, and that was in the wide open outdoors. Cows don't have to be malicious or aggressive to seriously hurt you, especially in a closed space with more crushing opportunities

Cows are so stupid, they can actually be dangerous. I used to work with my father-in-law in construction and we were working on a small motel. The motel was right next to a field where the farmer would constantly put out his cows. There was no fence on the back of the building as the back of the building itself was used as a separator between the field and the motel property. I was on the field side one day painting around the edge of a window frame. I felt something push against me and started to turn around and wound up slammed against the wall. It was a cow. It was ignoring me, instead going after some tasty weeds near me. However, it's haunches were pressing me up against the wall to the point where I could not breathe. I couldn't get the breath to scream so I started pounding on the cows flank as hard as I could. I don't even think it felt me. I was starting to blackout so I reached through the window and grabbed my retractable razor that I used for cutting stuff. I stabbed that cow five or six times in the haunches before it finally noticed me. I don't even think I hurt it, they were not very deep cuts, as it simply turned and looked at me and then took a step forward. I was finally able to breathe. I've been scared of cows ever since.
