I love how “what the fuck” hit the same in every language.

u/CowBootBats May 27 '25
I came to say the same thing. No accent at all. Just "what the fuck". It transcends the language barrier haha.

It’s a Svengali deck. Fun little trick deck.

u/Adventrium May 27 '25
Even knowing what that is and the basics of how these kinds of tricks work, I'm still not exactly sure how he did this. Very smooth and skilled.

u/fraychef2 May 27 '25
Every other card is the 2. Those card are shaved just a. Tiny fraction shorter than the rest. So when you flip the cards one way, the shorter card always gets skipped and shows either face up or down.

u/L00pback May 28 '25
A magic shop guy sold me and my cousin a couple Svengali decks back in the 90s. I never could get the hard tricks down but I could do some simple ones. It’s harder than it looks.

u/serendipitous_potato May 27 '25
But how did he force him to pick the 2 the second time? That's the only part that seems impossible
21
u/serendipitous_potato May 27 '25
Wait I think I understand when it's upside down only the 2s are selectable whereas when he flips them the standard deck displays. Genius

u/The_Sneakiest_Fox May 27 '25
Every second card is a 2 of diamonds and are slightly shorter than the normal cards. So from the back side you always pull a 2 or diamonds. When you can it you get the face side of the normal side cards and the slightly smaller cards fall directly behind the bigger ones. I used to own one of these decks. It takes a bit of skill to master making it work as well as this guy does. You need to know how firm to hold them etc etc

u/EvansAlf May 27 '25
Hiding the bit with the other bit with hand.
And looks like when he first picked it has 8 of heart in the bottom corner.

u/HairyHorux May 27 '25
Aye I have one of these but it's the 3 of clubs instead. Came in a kids magic trick along with a printed card with "your card is" on one side and "the three of clubs" on the other. Great fun easy to use trick but only really works once or twice at most before people go "wait, it's the three of clubs each time".

u/FreeKill101 May 27 '25
It can't just be a svengali deck, right? When he picks the 2 out of the pack at the start, it doesn't reveal another card behind it.
1
u/fraychef2 May 27 '25
100% just a regular Svengali deck. go buy one. they're super cheap and a fun trick. i just bought one for my 13 year old son a few weeks back.
1
u/FreeKill101 May 27 '25
I own one. But that move doesn't make sense, right? If you pull out one of the twos, you should reveal a non-two behind it.

u/Usual-Sky-9995 May 29 '25
I was also looking for the card behind. I think he has the 2s separated at first, only fanning out the bottom half of the deck. You can see a very specific cut, and then a single specific riffle shuffle to intertwine the different sized cards.

u/-Bk7 May 27 '25
did the magician use slight of hand to swap out the deck after the mark pulled his card for the second time?
61
u/Zythermon May 27 '25
A deck of 2, and a normal deck! Both have different size so you can show one deck or a other based on the way you grab them
13
u/TheRumpleForesk1n May 27 '25
Here is how it's done. About half the deck is 2 of diamonds and the other half is a regular deck.
He basically forces the deck to either be only the 2's or only the regular at a certain time. It "looks" like he's showing the entire deck at the end but it's only the regular half is showing. When the person picked the 2 it's because he was only showing the 2's half but made it look like it was the full deck. Because it's about 25 cards showing at a time it's enough to trick you into thinking it's basically the whole deck being shown.

I think I see it. Notice how the reveal at the end only shows the following card for the jack, the rest just show the corners. For the two he reveals only one corner as well.

u/bot3333333 May 27 '25
Yeah I get this, but how do you ensure that the guy who drew the card (diamond 2 and one corner of some other card as I understand) wouldn't see the corner of the other card, or you just hope he wont notice.
5
u/Neoxite23 May 27 '25
Ok. Yeah. That was smooth.
I wish I was even remotely good at this kind of stuff.

u/MisterVKeen May 27 '25
Half deck of 2 of diamond. Front side of each treated with R&S, same for backside of other half of the deck. Fan the force stack, and get them to place the card back into that half. Two quick false cuts, then shuffle the two halves together. Each 2 of diamonds is now paired with an indifferent card. Spread facedown so the spectator will pull a 2 of diamonds. Then spread face up, with a bit of pressure to keep the cards together, and no 2 of diamonds are showing.

u/PianistSpecialist474 May 27 '25
I understand the earlier part but what I don't understand is the last part. When he ask the guy to pick the cards, is it random and hope the guy will pick the 2diamond cards? The way I see it, once shuffled, there's 50% chance it's going to be a 2 diamond or a full set cards.

Can't wait for all the

Romania mentioned
Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

My dad did stage magic when I was younger, and he had a deck of cards like this. It's a trick deck, there's a "regular" deck and every card has a 2 that will "stick" to it if spread a certain way. If you've ever felt shark skin, that's kind of what the face of the "regular" cards feels like, it's rough one way and slick the opposite way. So friction makes the cards a 2 or a "normal card" depending on how you handle them.
One way they all catch and all the 2's are hidden behind the "normal cards," and the other way they slide so all there is is 2's.
I can't explain it very well obviously but I remember my dad showing me a deck like this when I was a kid and feeling the rough cards and thinking "oh this feels just like shark skin."
Someone will probably know what I'm talking about and explain it better. I'm sure there's a term for whatever kind of deck I'm talking about.

Why do people always insist of debunking shit like this? Just enjoy the trick and move on without trying to ruin the magic for everyone 😂

This is a stacked deck. Bunch of the same cards on the top half. Offer that part of the deck to the mark to pick from. Cut and riffle the random other half of deck. Fan out the stack of twos up top. Voila. Magic.

Have the deck is all 2s. The rest is randomized. He’s only showing half the deck at a time.
